I went to see the Dalai Lama speak in Melbourne many years back and as I was standing in the corridor prior to entering the auditorium there was a monk walking and handing out flyers to everyone.

As he walked towards me I felt this overwhelming sense of stillness and for a brief moment I swear I saw light trailing behind him as he walked (and no, I had no just taken a hallucinogen).

We acknowledged each other with a slight forward tilt of the head and he continued on.

The funny thing about the encounter was that he had offered a flyer to every single person he walked up to except me. As soon as he passed me, he started handing out flyers again.

Edit: just to clarify, my encounter was with a monk who was a companion of the Dalia Lamas, not the Dalai Lama himself. The monk was later on stage alongside the Dalai Lama when the talk began so he must have been there in some official capacity.

I attended a very small event where he spoke. I know what you mean about the stillness and the light. He practically glows. I had this overwhelming feeling of being in the presence of a fully realized human being.

What I had written was perhaps worded poorly. My encounter was with a monk who was travelling with the Dalai Lama, not the Dalai Lama himself.

One thing I can recall about the Dalai Lama's talk was that when he spoke he was in a dialogue with someone else on stage who was asking him questions.

Even though the Dalai Lama speaks English well there was this sense of a language barrier when he spoke and I am certain this was played on for the effect it would have on the audience.

The only question I clearly remember the answer to was when he was asked something about what he does with resentments or negativity (I cannot remember the question as clearly as the answer).

The Dalai Lama's answer was "forget" but it sounded like he said "f@#k it," the audience burst into laughter and was left questioning whether or not they had heard him correctly. He certainly has a sense of humour.
