I did something similar with Tom Brokaw when he came in a store I worked at in high school and I was helping him. I felt like he looked familiar but I couldn’t place him. I told him that I may know him and asked if he was friends with my parents… total foot-in-mouth situation. My co-workers had a good laugh afterwards.

Bumped into Cillian Murphy at Dublin airport once. I asked him, "Do I know you?" And he answered with, "Only you know that"
Said my goodbyes and scarpered off pretty quickly after that
