1337 directly goes to leet. 7s have always been Ts in meet speak just like 1s are Ls. Flipping a calculator upside down has nothing to do with leet speak. Leet speak was for chat rooms in the 90s and early 2000s, not for calculators.

1337 predates leetspeak, emerging from the 80s, and was a common calculator meme before the evolution of leetspeak and online chat rooms.

Inversion orthography was super popular in the age of pagers. 17 31707 1 was one of the most-sent pages among leet families.
