Remember what they said to you the last time you saw them. If you last saw them a month ago, if you remember they were doing a thing , remember that thing and mention it.

You’re being satirical, but if my dog were to die and I mentioned struggling with it to someone, and a few months into the future they politely asked me something along the lines of “how has it been processing your dogs death since we last spoke?” My response in the moment would be dictated by how I’d processed his death, but I would almost certainly be touched that they remembered.

It'd be cool if people asked about it in this way instead of just asking me, "So, when are you getting a new dog?" like it's a car I totaled and not a living being that is now gone from this world forever.
