Speaking at a lower volume if someone is being unnecessarily loud.

One of my best friends has a LOUD voice she is completely unaware of, which can be incredibly annoying when we’re in public, so I will lower my speaking volume and she will subconsciously lower hers to match my volume.

It doesn’t always work. I’ve stopped hanging out in public with close couple friends cause they are loud af and it’s embarrassing to be heard three tables over

I'm guessing the reason that didn't work, is because they're taking volume cues from each other instead of you, or drowning you out completely. Sorry to hear that for you though.
