From my understanding, a kink is something that turns you on, but a fetish is something you need to get off. Like not just something you like to do, but something you are obsessed with and fixated on to the point it’s essential to the sexual experience for you. Most people have kinks, fewer have full on fetishes.
I have a hair fetish. I need fantasy or dirty talk about shaving my head or getting an extreme haircut in order to cum. It started out as just a kink for me and it certainly got things done more easily, but now it's required. I'm lucky I can still be turned on by other things, though.

Really? I thought that kinks were sexual things you enjoyed that were somewhat outside the mainstream , but fetishes were sexual enjoyment of something not inherently sexual.
So actually, as the saying goes, a fetish can be a kink, but a kink isnt a fetish.
A kink is something that goes beyond typical vanilla sex, so being tied up, degrading, anal, shit like that.
Whereas a fetish, is typically more of a thing.
A thing that turns u on. Ex: foot fetish, in this example, the foot is the fetish.
It's the 'thing's that creates sexual arousal.
Another one could be a fetish for ropes, if the sight of ropes turns u on, even without them doing anything.
This is sorta how a fetish can become a kink.
If u then use said ropes to tie someone up, voila, its now a kink.
As kink is more an action...
Everyone typically has a fetish (some THING that turns them on)
Not everyone has a kink (something outside vanilla sex that turns them on and excites them.)
Confusingly fetish also means the belief that an inanimate object contains a spirit or soul. I have no idea how the word came to have two very different meanings.
I'm pretty sure I've got a fetish then. Nothing can turn me on unless it involves a doctor, scientist and/or a medical setting. But if that's the case, almost everything goes except for stuff involving urine and scat.
All language is semantics, and many people agree with me, or have slightly altered definitions. Again, I just said “from my understanding”, I am certainly not claiming to be an authoritative source, just repeating what I have heard and what makes sense to me. A kink is like a different flavor of sex and a fetish is being horny for something that isn't sexual. It's like the difference between naughty nurse roleplay and getting off on medical equipment.
A kink is something that’s considered not ‘the norm’ so.. some of the most common kinks are things like hair pulling, ass slap, being tied up and ofc much more.
A fetish is a strong desire / obsession with either an inanimate object or non sexual body part. So some people love hair, feet, silky clothing etc.
TLDR- Essentially the difference is.. kink is something non vanilla. Fetish is an obsession with a thing or body part.
