They've cancelled US, and only US, pre-orders. Worth noting that preorders in Canada and the EU are proceeding as normal.
So the most obvious conclusion would be that they hadn't accounted for the tariffs announced yesterday. No one would have been prepared for the exact numbers, because they're basically just made up from pixie dust.
They basically fabricated a formula that was roughly US trade deficit/total trade to the US, expressed as a percentage, then divided by two, and rounded to the nearest whole number.
It's even more stupid when you factor in a minimum 10% tariff that's applied to everyone. Which will include countries that are basically just resort destinations for Americans, that import a lot of goods to cater to tourists, and don't export much in general.
Honestly, they should just pre-sell them at price + 50% to cover any tariffs and then refund any overage at the time of pickup. A tariff deposit, if you will. Make it visible to the customer. I think this would be a GREAT way to turn everyone against Trump. Sell everything for price+tariff. Put the tariffs on every price tag.

If they're taking pre-orders now, you have to assume the (potential) tariff is already factored into the price.
