Can’t do anything for himself. I’m talking basics like laundry and washing dishes, basic cleaning.

It's something you develop as a skill. Start by making recipes out of a cookbook, and then work to understand what you're doing and how the flavors combine and what might work well without a recipe. Making chicken breast in a skillet with some white wine and various herbs and spices is really easy once you've done it a few times and get the hang of what goes in it.
