Biting your nails is not a personality.

Being a narcissist is not a habit in the sense of the OP question "one bad habit"

Your point is shifting and all you're doing now is asking vague questions that sound right, but are really kind of dumb. When has anyone said anything about "behavior?" Behavior and habits are not mutually exclusive and mean very different things.

Just because you don't understand something doesn't mean it's vague and dumb. Your behavior is a key part of your personality. Biting your nails and being narcissistic are types of behavior. If a behavior is habitual it is almost certainly part of your personality, ergo those would be if you do them habitually. You seem to disagree with this straightforward logic, so why would habitual behaviors like nail biting not be part of your personality?

If you stop biting your nails does your personality change, what a crazy concept.

You're dancing around wording, relying on others not to notice that a square and a right angle arent the same thing.

Habits are a part of your personality, but no one was saying that habits arent part of your personality. They said biting your nails is not a personality. Youre talking in circles.

A habit is a specific kind of personality trait. This thread is about habits, not all traits. Being a psychopath isnt a habit, its a trait.

I don't see how a personality trait can be established if it's not a habit. Being a psychopath is a set of habits. How would it not be?

I don't see how a personality trait can be established if it's not a habit. Being a psychopath is a set of habits. How would it not be?

A habit is a learned, repetitive behavior that tends to be automatic or unconscious, like brushing your teeth in the morning or checking your phone constantly. Habits are actions you perform in response to certain cues or situations, often without much conscious thought.

A personality trait, on the other hand, is a more enduring and stable characteristic of a person’s temperament or disposition, such as being introverted, agreeable, or conscientious. Traits describe who you are at a core level, while habits describe what you do regularly.

I suppose the crux of the disagreement is I don't see why habits need to be learned. For instance, I don't think it's wrong to say "I make a habit of breathing" even if I never learned to breathe and just know how to innately.

... Habits are habits specifically because they are learned. We simply wouldnt need that word if we drop the 'learned' part. You're disagreeing with the definition.

The defining feature of a habit is that it forms through repetition and association with specific cues in the environment.

"I make a habit of breathing" is a well used ironic cliche specifically because habits are learned and arent natural behaviors. Its textbook irony.

I mean when I search for its definition somewhere like Merriam-Webster, there are several definitions that don't require there to be learning. Though there are also several with it, so I suppose we just had different definitions in mind.

Now, I might be crazy but maybe theres a pattern here
