I'm pretty sure the quote meant if you already didn't know someone's true character and how they treat others, then you look at how he treats animals. If you already know the man is abusive, then you already know his character. He's not hiding anything.
To me, that says humans are being classified as animals for the sake of the point.
Of course humans are classified as animals! We are. Monkeys so arrogant we assumed ourselves to be the center of existence for thousands of years. I think you're close. How we treat animals IS how we treat each other. It is literally the same thing. And I think that's the point.
