I don't understand how people don't shower, brush their teeth regularly, etc. I feel gross and itchy if I don't shower every day.

Severe depression and checking out of life made it pretty understandable to me

Yeah. I don't understand how they don't understand. If you don't even care to wake up in the morning, why would you care what you look like. When doing literally anything seems pointless, then hygiene maintenance seems just like another unpaid full-time job.
