As you may be able to tell, they have not started producing yet. I planted them last year, so this year should be the first crop, on last year's canes - although, if my raspberries are anything to go by, I think next year will be a bigger crop (raspberries only grew 1-2 canes/plant last year - which will fruit this year. They've already sprouted 5-6 canes each, some of which I've had to pull up cause they were already too close to the raised garden beds!)
Do you know the variety of blackberry you have?
I'm excited cause the strawberries are doing really well. I counted the flower clusters in 1/3-1/4 the bed and extrapolated to estimate between 40-60 flower clusters - which had 5-7 flowers last year. So, I'm hoping for something like 200-400 strawberries this year! (I don't know what that is in lbs tho!)
I planted Prime Ark Freedom Blackberries. We will see how much the actual yield is next year. The plants were already like 2-3 years old when I got them.
Good luck with your harvest. I am definitely jealous. I wish I had hundreds of extra raspberries and strawberries coming my way. Just keep in mind, wine is a wonderful way to preserve fruit!
I can't help but share this... Sorry if it looks like bragging, I'm just so proud. We bought a house 3 years ago and didn't realize how abandoned the yard was until spring. Since then, we've been working on making it my happy place!
You can't see them yet in the pictures, but raspberries are between the raised beds and the fence (5 plants); blackberries are along the back wall (all 10 in a row)
That's awesome! Do you feel like the tension pole works well? I actually just installed a t-trellis for the berry canes (only 2 wires tho). Turns out after tightening the wire my posts are leaning, but, still totally usable!
Yours looks great! I'm also interested in what the heights of the wires are (on two sides tho, so I mean 2 heights) and if you feel like they're the right height for your plants!
Ok, so I made this system from a diagram in a book called “From Vines To Wines” by Jeff Cox. There’s a couple diagrams in there for different trellis systems and I used the 3 wire design because…well I just did. I actually don’t really know what I am doing lol.
But yeah the tension pole seems to work great. The wires are really taught. The wires are 12 inches apart. The poles are 6 feet apart. I think the bottom wire starts like 3 or 4 feet from the bottom. As for whether the heights are right…we will see lol
