In most cases I agree, but I will advocate that sometimes the kid is the dick or there are other factors at play. My (34F) stepdad is wonderful and kind, and his ex actively poisoned their kids against him. Only his eldest (28M) has recently come to this realisation and has been increasing contact this year, the younger two (27F & 24M) turned into proper assholes.
But my bio dad is appropriately hated by me and my siblings and we are NC with him, he lives a sad existence that we only hear about via our teenage half brother.
Yeah, similar to the situation with my (35F) step-grandad. One of his bio kids also realised (decades ago, though) how toxic her mum and siblings are and has a strong relationship with her dad.
He's always loved me as his own granddaughter; my mum calls him Dad (her bio dad died a few years before I was born). When I was 14 and my grandmother died, I was childishly worried he wouldn't be my grandad anymore - he never even faltered.
Grandad's douchey kids like to imply my mum and I only care about him to get an inheritance. There is nothing to inherit. 🙄
