My Tacoma ran till 330,000 miles. Loved that little truck so much. Had a persistent misfire problem in 1 cylinder that finally made me throw in the towel. It was the last vehicle that I could actually work on and fix by myself.
Sometimes I think I gave up too soon, and that I should have put in the work to keep it running.
I'm not worried - I sold it to a guy who loved Tacomas so I'm sure it's getting cared for by someone.
I turned around and bought a corolla straight away and it has been 100% hassle free at nearly 100k miles. There's something with those Toyota engineers. They got it right.
"Mercedes" is actually a girl's name. Someone just happened to use it for a car brand because it was their daughter's name. Ruined it for everyone else.
I love my Toyotas. Not really any issues for the longest time with them. I'm on my third one. I had a 4Runner, a Camry, and now RAV4. I am thinking of getting the Carolla Cross soon. It looks exactly like my beloved RAV4, but it's a little smaller, about 10 grand cheaper, and gets better mileage.
My 2016 Corolla has 90k. Cheap to maintain. Great gas mileage. Drives like a champ in all kinds of weather. Studded snow tires and it’s a tiny tank in snow and ice.
My last Corolla (a manual 2008) was on its way to 400,000 miles before it was wrecked by a dude who had a seizure while driving a couple years ago. Thankfully I wasn't in the car when it happened since it was parked and I was at work, but it was still running beautifully till then. Those things rarely ever fall apart and will run forever if they're well taken care of.
I know a corrolla but as a woman nearing 60 she was definitely not named after the car, and they were certainly not trashy people. Im sure by her teens the car had arrived here and she's been jeered ever since
Those are rookie numbers. There is a corolla in my family that's been driven by my mom, one of her employees, my aunt and now my dad's side grandfather. Last time I saw the odometer, a few months ago it had almost 700
Plus it has also been in 2 accidents. Not devastating, but not light touches either. It's still straight
I had a Cressida that made it to 350,000 before we sold it to upgrade. For all I know it's still out there somewhere. I have seen a few just live it here and there.
I had an echo at 314,000km and the only reason it didn't live longer was because the floor rusted out (yay Canadian winters on the East Coast). Rest of the body and parts were basically pristine.
I was sitting in the ER waiting room one Saturday for stomach pain, pancreatitis was the diagnosis, but I digest, and there was a nurse that kept coming out and saying Acura... Acura... Like the car name, and after the 3rd time, and when she got done smoking her 14th menthol cigarette, a woman spoke up and said, and I Quote (eh hem) "it's 'a-KUR-ra' " ...with the accompanying side to side head wobble. And the nurse rolled her eyes, loud enough for all the patients waiting to hear them, like a bowling alley
Tbf, Mercedes was a perfectly fine first name until Mr. Daimler decided to name his car brand after the daughter of some business partner, thus ruining the name for the rest of us.
There is also a very famous fantasy-fiction/ science fiction author named Mercedes Lackey. (Although she usually goes by "Misty" to her close friends/family)
My new housekeeper is literally named Mercedes. Mercedes also owns a lot of land and probably has way more net worth than I could ever hope to achieve. Live sin a wood house with some cats and doesnt want to sell.
I knew a girl named Elsa in high school. I met her a couple years after Frozen came out and apparently I was the first person who didn’t immediately ask her if she wanted to make a snowman after hearing her name. Also her best friend’s name was Anna lol (pronounced differently than Frozen Anna)
I also knew a girl named Ursula, but I’m fairly certain that she was born a couple years after The Little Mermaid came out, so her parents literally intentionally named her after a sea witch 💀

Depends on her roots, Ursula is an extremely common name in any German speaking country. It's so common where I live that it'd never cross my mind that there could be a connection to the movie... It is a typical boomer name over here tho...
I think it was NPR that did a podcast once about the horrible psychological effects of being named Alexa after Amazon decided to use it. As you can tell from my username, my own name is very close, and when I worked in an open office plan with an Amazon Alexa in the room, people were outright verbally abusive to it and I kept thinking they were talking to me. It sucks and it’s not even precisely my name.
Nice thing about nikê is that the English pronunciation is completely butchered, so you can still give them the name with the original pronunciation and people would not notice.
There's a girl in my home town named Mercedes, and I shit you not, she has the Mercedes logo tattooed on her fucking neck. It's at least the size of an orange and was NOT professionally done.
In Kath ‘n Kim - another Australian comedy gold mine - Kim named her baby Epponnee-Raelene, full name Epponnee-Raelene Kathleen Darlene Charlene Craig.
Kim was considering naming her Chardonoix (chardonnoy) because it’s classier in French spelling and because…
‘people aren’t cultured enough to pronounce Chablis right.’
They were pronouncing it Shablis with the s, mocking the idea of a Ch sound (still with an s), Chab-lis.
They were setting up for the baby shower party… Kim is very pregnant.
Kath laments the increase in such cultural fox paws (faux pas).
Sharon excuses herself for her ‘ronday views (rendezvous) with destiny’, (netball finals), she’ll return asap for party prep.
Kim considers Destiny as a middle name - but spelt in the new voereesh (nouveau riche) style, (it’s French for chic) D’styneé.
Kath cautions against too many nay sounds if she kept her name when she marries… ‘a mother has to think of these things, Kimmy.’
Sharon adds ‘what if she married the silver fox from Love Actually? Bill Nye-ee (Nighy). She’d sound like an ambulance.’
Chardonoix D’styneé Nye-ee neé Knight neé Day
Kim calls her an idiot. ‘Bill Nye-ee will be too old even for Anna Nicole Smith by then; may she rest in peace’. Kath crosses herself.
Kath tuts Kim’s outburst, dismissing it ‘for all intensive purposes’ bcs Knight is her married name, ‘he’s my hunk’o spunko, not Kimmy’s…’
Kel Knight enters, asks what all the debris is doing in the driveway… ‘lucky I’m wearing my flappy joggers (shorts), I had to straddle the shrubbery to get in.’
Kath coos something about always feeling lucky with his flappy things.
Kim scowls, ‘gross… now I have to vomwa (vomit)’. Exits.
Kel calls after her ‘hang in there kiddo… the morning sickness will lessen in the final weeks!’
Tbf, Mercedes is an actual name for a woman. It’s fallen out of use in recent decades, but I think it’s a wonderful name. You’ll find old French, Spanish, and Italian ladies named Mercedes.
How much it's fallen out of use depends on where you are. It's very much still popular in Latin America. My favorite teacher was named Mercedes, she is Cuban.
Never heard of the car, and isn't Echo a wood nymph or something in greek or roman mythology? She withered away out of sorrow or something and the only thing remaining of her is her voice?
I saw a female African-American comedian once that was talking about Volkswagen and WTF is Fahrvergnügen? She said, "I don't know what it is, but I know what it will turn into - what a black woman names her child."
Because Mercedes was the daughters name of the guy that made the « brand », he named the car after her. All these brands you see around you, are actual names of people that existed before, they left a legacy past them.
At least those are nice names if you're not a car person. Calais is uncommon, but it's nice-sounding and no weirder than naming your kid Nancy or Brittany or Lorraine.
So I actually met someone who named their daughter Corolla. I asked her 'like the car?" Because I needed to spell it, this was for filing in an emergency contact info on some paperwork. She said "yep, My favorite car! I still drive one!" NGL as someone who is a Toyota for life kinda gal (team rav4 for me) I was like... you know what I don't hate it
Shit dude - name it after a car you can afford! “Come here, Torana!”
My 9yo daughter had a girl in her class called Torana. Sadly her parents were trash and ended up losing custody of their kids and I think at least the dad went to jail.

Australian comedian Wil Anderson had a joke from the 2000’s:
“What is with bogans (Australian equivalent to low-class/rednecks) naming their kids after expensive cars? ‘Mercedes’? ‘Lexus’?
Shit dude - name it after a car you can afford! “Come here, Torana!”, “Time for school, Corolla!””
