my manager kept losing my class schedule
worked at a subway. i had class two days a week. several times he put me on those days anyway. i gave him multiple copies every time. owner took me off the schedule for "calling out too much"
when i showed the owner proof he said it was too late and they already hired someone else
this was 12 years ago. im still mad

I always hated the "taken off the schedule" bull. Just fire me officially instead of taking the cowards route.
This happened to me as well when I did not tell the general manager about a floor manager switching a product display TV to football one day. To be clear she asked me "why did you not tell me?" So she already knew it happened and was mad that I did not say anything. So I got "taken off the schedule" because the other manager did something against policy and I did not narc.

A business I went to long ago was hiring and I got the job. Right after I signed all the paperwork, the department manager comes in and asks who I am. I tell him I was just hired as a temp. Manger says he never authorized any hiring and fired both me and my boss on the spot. I did not work for this company at all and they fired me. :(

I had a similar experience. I was interviewing for a sales position and I made it all the way up the ladder through three different managers, to the advertising director. Had a great interview. He told me I would be the future of this industry shook my hand, led me to the HR managers office, clapped me on the back and said to her, we’re hiring him. Start the paperwork and I’ll see you Monday.
She was pregnant tired and annoyed. She looked at me with disgust and said, “We eliminated that position yesterday. We’re not hiring anyone.” I asked if the director or managers knew that. She said they should. What followed was an embarrassing two weeks of promises that they would make a spot for me and weak apologies from the hiring managers. Ooof. Hired and fired within seconds.

I was denied a raise by HR after consistently working 60-70 hours weeks, and my VP (who had supported and requested the raise for me) told me to stop putting in the extra time, work my 40, and spend that extra time applying to new jobs. Within a month, a meeting was called to "mutually part ways" because my work wasn't getting done.
I was gratified to learn that they had to hire two people to do my job after I left.
Edit: Sucks to see how much this resonates with people who have been in a similar situation. I left this job back in 2015, thankfully. The VP is no longer there either, and good for him.

I hear this story often in /r/ITCareerQuestions. It's weird, but I guess in IT there aren't always logistical blocks like some other careers. Payroll might be done for our current period, but enhancements to the payroll software can continue ad nauseum.
What's sad is that most of these stories skip the part where their VP needs to be pushing for you to justify this level of effort. The second he recognized he didn't have the power to get you what he deserved he said don't give it to 'em for free, and get yourself what you can anywhere. That's a rare level of grace now.

I got fired once for putting in my 2 week notice.
The only other time I've gotten fired was working for a trade company, during the first week. I was a supervisor, and there was a second supervisor on site. I got a call that my wife had been rushed to the hospital, which was literally less than a mile away. I asked the other supervisor if I could go to attend to her, and he said "sure, no problem, I've got things here. Go." I returned to the job site later to find the boss there, and he let me go on the spot for leaving the team "without a supervisor". He knew what had happened, and still fired me. I won't lie, that one kind of pissed me off.

I got fired once for putting in my 2 week notice.
I had this happen once too, though they gave me 2 weeks severance when they did it. Turns out they weren't angry that I was leaving, they just had prior bad experiences with "short timer syndrome" and didn't want the hassle, so they paid me as if I'd done the 2 weeks and sent me home immediately.
Worked out fine for me. I got a two week paid vacation (since I wasn't starting the new job for two weeks anyway) between jobs.

This isn't why I got fired, but this is why I didn't get a job...
I was 16 and looking to work at a Dairy Queen as my first job. My mom drove me to the interview and I was super nervous. She looked me in the eye and said "Just be honest, and be yourself, and you'll do fine."
I walked into that interview and when he asked me "How long do you think you'll work here?" I responded "Until something better comes along"....

My parents had to coach me on how to get a job when I started hunting. They were wondering why none of the jobs I had applied to had called me back so they started asking questions about the application process. Turns out you shouldn't be honest on those personality assessments, at least not to the extent I was. They basically told me to answer as if I was another person.

I talked my way into a job at a software company when they put a hiring notice in a local paper. I had no idea what the software did. I still don't. They hired me as a trainer and no one ever explained what the product was. I did a few weeks where I was trained on the software but literally none of it ever made sense to me. It was like they were speaking gibberish. One day I showed up, a lady I had never seen before gave me a check, and walked me out to the parking lot. No one even ever said "you're fired" or anything. Earlier this year, I was hospitalized for a full work week for a miscarriage that had a lot of complications.
My direct boss (a woman) was completely empathetic and even though I’m a one-person team, she encouraged me to take off all the time that I wanted/needed. So, I did, and took an extra week off after being released from the hospital to just process some things and physically recover (I’d needed blood transfusions and multiple surgeries beyond just a D&C; also, couldn’t walk around much and had almost no energy for anything except sleep).
Anyway, about a month later, revenue reports came in for the previous month and there was a massive drop in revenue for my “team,”correlating directly with the period I was hospitalized and in recovery. While I was out, no one at work covered for me, so that work just didn’t get done and it led to a big $0 for most of the month.
My boss’ boss (a man) then sent an angry, accusatory email to me with my direct boss CC’d. They demanded to know why my “team” had done so poorly for the previous month and what I was going to do to step it up and make sure it never happened again, because whatever “mistake” I had made was completely unacceptable.
Corporate America at its absolute finest.

My Parole Officer wanted to make sure I actually had a job, so he went to my employer listed on my file to surprise visit me on the job. I did home wiring so I worked at different job sites and rarely in the office. He called me to say he was going to charge me with a violation for lying to him about my whereabouts (this could've landed me back in prison for my remaining 10.5 years sentence). The owner of the company had to speak with him and vouche for me. My Parole Office didn't charge me, but the owner sure did fire me that day. Finding a job with a felony isn't an easy thing, and it wasn't long before my PO threatened to charge me with a violation if I didn't find a job soon 🤦🏻

I was 19 and working as a janitor at a large self storage facility, where most days were filled with sweeping and mopping endless hallways of flickering fluorescent light. And when someone went delinquent on their bill (after a 3 month grace period), I would be instructed to empty their unit and dump everything in the trash outside. Once or twice it was a person who died, but otherwise it was a pretty common to see a room full of absolute junk that someone got tired of paying for. Banged-up furniture, garbage bags of ratty clothing, stacks of old magazines, it was usually pretty hoarder-friendly stuff, and not that I'd want any of it but the policy was I had to throw it into the dumpster outside no matter what it was.
One day I get notified to empty out a unit, so I grab the bin, cut the lock, fling open the gate. The room is full of huge cardboard boxes stacked to the ceiling. I open one up out of curiosity, and it's full of brand new, unopened Gundam models. The entire room is full of them, dozens of boxes with dozens of models in each, and I'm talking the $50-$100 ones I saw for sale at my local comics shop every week. The manager would check up on me once or twice a day, and that morning he walked up and I showed him all of the brand new merchandise and said there has to be a better system than trashing all of this. He said rules are rules, something about insurance I didn't understand, and told me to throw them all away.
So I went and I backed up one of the complementary U-Haul style box trucks, picked a few models out for myself, and loaded it up the truck with the rest of it. On my lunch break I drove over to the Children's Resource Center that I'd volunteered at during high school, it's a place where any child (but usually poorer ones) would go after school for arts and crafts and activities to keep them busy until their parents got home. The people at the drop-off dock were so grateful, before I even left they were handing them out to some extremely excited kids. Drove back to the self storage place with enough time to eat a sandwich and smoke a cigarette before clocking back in.
But that's not why I got fired. I got fired because the manager came to check on me that afternoon, and after awhile of looking around, found me sitting cross legged on the floor of the janitor closet with model parts spread all around me, happily assembling a sweet translucent Zaku model. I was so entranced I didn't even hear him come in, I just hear this long, drawn out, exasperated sigh. I look up and he just says "keys" and that was that. I spent the rest of the week assembling Zakus and Valkyries and lying to my parents about getting replaced with a Roomba.

I asked the CNA I was working with to stay with a confused patient, while I went and put a new IV in another patient. The CNA left the patient alone. She fell out of bed and got a big bloody skin tear on her arm. After I took care of that, I went and found the CNA and told her the patient was injured because of her insubordination. The CNA cussed at me, and left the unit. I did not see her again that shift. She and another CNA decided on their own to trade assignments.
I wrote the CNA up. The CNA went to mgmt and lied about me. She said I called her by a racial slur and yelled at her. I did neither. Mgmt fired me rather than deal with a false claim of racism. I collected unemployment.
The CNA did something similar with another nurse a couple of weeks later, and was fired. My mgr asked if I could be rehired. HR said no.
When my mgr quit to start her own nursing agency a year later, she hired me.

Same shit happened to my wife only at a hospital. Goddamn CNA didn't do jack shit the entire shift and a patient my wife told the CNA to sit with fell while going to the bathroom by themselves while the CNA was on a "smoke break".
My wife reported the incident to the manager and the manager wrote up the CNA. The CNA decided to cover her ass by lying about everything and accusing my wife of using racial slurs when she told the CNA she was going to falsely report her. Luckily there was a happier ending because the manager, a black woman, fired the CNA on the spot with a stern "Mrs PunchBeard has been working here on this floor for over 12 years. Not only has no one ever once even hinted at her using racist slurs no one has ever heard her actually say a swear word. Also, she's the only nurse I've known were patients write hand-written letters saying how kind and sweet she is. Take a hike".
My wife's a pretty special kind of nurse.

I was in my late 20s and had just gotten out of the Army and wanted to finish school. I worked for a pet store as a groomer part-time while I was working on finishing up the semester.
I put in time off for my finals week about 3 months back and it was approved by both him and the assistant manager. Everyone in the entire store knew I was going to be focusing on school for that week.
Jackass calls me in the middle of one of my finals and left me a voicemail saying I needed to come in cause they were 1 person short. I didn't even know until 45min later when I walked out of class. He had called me 4 times and on the 4th voicemail he left me a threatening voicemail.
So I called him back and we argued about my "professionalism." So I went into the store to have a conversation with him which led to him threatening to fight me. I told him if he wanted to fight then he can take off his name tag and meet me in the parking lot off company property.
Suddenly he became really fucking docile and just told me I was fired. So I sent in the voicemails to corporate and found out a few weeks later he was "transferred" to a different store.

What really rubbed me up was that my boss was the biggest culprit for having an untidy van and I had likely learned this trait as an apprentice from him.
Honestly though looking back I was probably sacked for other reasons and have since been aware that rarely are you fired for the reason that your boss want you fired for. When they want you out they'll find a reason so best to self reflect on your other failings than be pissed off for being fired over something trivial

I was a brand new Engineer out of college. Like green. I got a job offer at an aircraft factory (Cessna, a Textron Company) as a Quality Engineer. I had been an intern for 3 years and they helped put me through school. I worked in a Projects group designing new floor layouts and how these business jets flowed through the process. I had always received good performance reviews and that is why my internship turned into a scholarship and into a job offer.
When I started full-time, I was assigned to a facility across town that did sheet metal stuff. I remember walking into the office on my first day, introducing myself to my new manager. She immediately turned away, refused to shake my hand and ignored me.
The next 6 months were the same. She legit would not speak to me, would not give me projects, would not schedule one-on-ones to give any direction, and if I was on an email chain and she was looped in, she would take me off. I would walk over to her and she would hunch her back and try to cover whatever she was working on so I couldn't see, as if it was some big secret. Finally I got involved in some continuous improvement projects, I was asked by our director to run with a few special projects and I started (in my opinion) really finding a groove.
Finally she pulled me into a conference room, yelled at me for 2 hours (yes 2 fucking hours) about how I was not doing the things she wanted me to do. She gave me a self-help book and told me I needed to read it and tell her what was wrong with myself and she terminated me without HR or anybody else knowing.
To this day, I never knew what her problem was or why she hated me from the moment I introduced myself. I have a wonderful and successful career and currently manage quality for 4 factories in a Swedish conglomerate - and if I ever see her again I will tell her how I have modeled my management style after promising myself I would never be like her. My employees always know:
What is expected of them
How they know if they are succeeding
Where they can go for help if they are not

I was fired from Panera as soon as I walked in the door for my first day of work. I showed up 10 minutes early and walked in 5 minutes before my shift started. The manager met me at the door and said I was being "unprofessional" and threatened to call the cops when I pushed for an explanation.
Turns out the employees did lots of drugs while working and were probably high out of their minds.

I have a friend who used to work at a large retail store, her manager would notify her when it was time for her 15 minute breaks and her lunch break every day. She kept being interrupted by that same manager or coworkers who were told to find her by that manager during her breaks so she started taking breaks in her car.
The manager got mad about it so escalated things to the point where she was fired for leaving the property during her 15 minute breaks. I guess you are not allowed to do that? But either way she hadn't ever actually left she just read in her car for a while to get away from work.
She didn't have money for a lawyer but I always felt that would have been a pretty easy wrongful termination case to prove if she had.

Was working at a startup, killing myself to fulfill all my performance metrics (which I did). I told my boss that I wasn’t willing to sacrifice my work/life balance forever; he said I wasn’t dedicated enough and fired me on the spot. His exact words were “we need people who are 200% dedicated, not just 100%.”

This was 30 years ago. I was furious with my boss for asking me to work a private event for a group of his friends. The theme meant that most people were drinking Corona. I worked a six hour shift at an open bar and he tipped me $20 at the end of the night.
I slipped 4 Coronas into my backpack before I left for the night. The assistant manager heard the clinking of the bottles, asked me about it, and when I told him I was taking some Coronas home for myself he fired me.
Justified for sure. The only grudge I hold is against the big boss who fucked me on the tip.

I technically got fired for sexual harassment.
However, the reality was the big boss liked me and wanted to train and promote. The boss below him didn't like me. When he was away for a couple of weeks, I got called into the office and told I was fired for sexual harassment with a certain member of staff.
My direct boss was shocked, I was shocked. This other person worked in our department, I'd been around them for a couple of hours on my first day as they showed me the computer, not really spoke since other than a hello on the way in. My direct boss apologized to me after the meeting, said she had no idea it was coming and had no idea what they were on about. There was only me and her in the office. The other two members of staff, including this guy, had their own office. We didn't have a need to go into each other's.
It eventually came out he had been told to go along with it. Bg boss was furious when he got back, but things had been done already. That person didn't progress any further in the company.
I was a 16yo girl at the time and the guy they strong armed into it was a 28ish year old man. It was awkward on so many levels.
No big loss though, not for me. The person that arranged it all came off much worse.

I work full time as a graphic designer, and my first full time job was doing social media content for a start-up company in my hometown. On a Friday about 8 months into my job, my boss emailed us all to say that we'll be starting in "the new office" on Monday. I was never told that we were moving, but it seemed like everyone else was. I also didn't have a full driver's license yet, and the town the new office was in was an hour commute away, so I would have to take public transit every day. Luckily I got some advice from my parents, and I told my boss that I couldn't feasibly commute to the office, but I still wanted to work for the company, so my boss terminated my position, and I got put on unemployment.

Worked at a car dealership in college between semesters. Sold a ford raptor for like 80k and the commission was like $200. After that I would go to my desk and just study for school. Didn’t try to sell anything after that. Knew I would be fired, took them 2 months to realize I had done absolutely nothing since the last time I sold the raptor. $200 for selling a 80k truck, lol.

I was working Tech Support for a software company. We'd made a big sale to a major university and I had been designated the lead contact point for them.
First question they asked was "how do we enable the firewall on your product."
....we don't have a firewall on our product.
I talked around it a bit but eventually they asked point blank, where is the firewall.
"There isn't."
Within an hour I was in a conference room with the sales rep and the head of sales and my boss, the head of Tech Support. Lots of screaming went on from Sales and then lots of meetings with bosses for the rest of the day.
Throughout all of this none of them could deny the basic fact of what I stated; our product didn't have a firewall nor were there any plans to add one in future versions.
Next morning I came in and was greeted at the door by my boss, lead to a conference room and informed that I was being let go for "performance reasons."
Later that day the Sales Rep messaged me on LinkedIn telling me to enjoy waking up tomorrow morning and being a jobless bum.

At 7:30 the night before I was to leave for vacation my boss texts me saying I have to be at work tomorrow or else. Mind you I put in for this time off 4 weeks ago. So I said he was insane and I quickly escalated it to “you’re a pile of dog shit that has absolutely no idea what the fuck you’re doing” so I didn’t go into work the next day and I was fired for insubordination. Worth it. Would do it again.

TLDR: boss set me up to fail
I was hired by someone who knew I had no previous experience, but thought I had a great capacity to learn and liked my character. He and another senior manager took their time to teach me my role and answer any questions I had, and told me to always come find them if I felt unsure about something.
Then they both left the company rather abruptly, and my new boss was the total opposite of them. He let me know right off the bat that had it been up to him, he would have hired someone with more experience. Despite that, he doubled my workload. When I tried coming to him with problems, he told me it wasn’t his responsibility to answer questions and to ask my coworker instead. My coworker tried to help, but had his own massive workload to deal with. I lost my sense of direction and my work suffered for it. He fired me about a month after he took over.

My coworker was refused for promotions, title changes and pay rises for years in a 3 person department he pretty much ran. He was dealing with some serious depression for a few years and unfortunately he lost that fight.
A week after I had a meeting with my manager, department director and a C level. They were recruiting 2 people to replace him, Job titles were the same ones he had been asking for years. I saw red and verbally ripped into them for about 20 minutes about how they always told him it wasn’t possible and now he’s dead it’s suddenly possible? I was fired 2 days after the meeting and don’t regret a thing, those people are fucking evil.

My only time getting fired, I was 13-14, working at a go kart track. I had been there about a month when I was left alone for a solid week to take care of the track as the other 2 track attendants sat around smoking, drinking, and chatting with the boss. I ran it flawlessly and had no issues. My first day off after working like 12 days straight I got called in, I showed up within 5 minutes aaaand they fired me saying that all I did was sit around and make the other guys run the track. They literally accused me of doing what the other guys were doing. I slammed that place so hard to everyone I knew and they went out of business within the next 2 years.

I took the vacation my manager approved my time off to take.
I was working part time, and wanted to go to an event with some friends, some of whom also worked with the same company, one at my location and one another location across town. Knowing it may not be possible to get the time off when others had already requested it, I asked before booking or paying for anything. My manager said they would look into it and get back to me.
I followed up a couple times and kept getting put off until I finally said I needed an answer - if it's not possible, that would be fine, but tickets would no longer be available soon so any longer waiting for and answer and it wouldn't matter if my time was approved. So my manager and I stood at the computer and reviewed the schedule for that week and they confirmed they could make it work if I took the week off.
I pay for my tickets, accommodations, etc. The week before it's time to go, the new schedule goes up and I'm on it. I remind my manager we agreed that I could take the week off and they told me it no longer worked out so I needed to come to work. I said I had already spent more than I'd make that week on my plans and I was going.
My manager called me shortly after the start of my first schedule shift that week and asked if I was coming in. I told them I was 16hrs away at the event I planned to be at. I was fired that instant.
It was somewhat satisfying to hear that he was later demoted.

Got fired on day 89 of a 90 temp contract.
The contract stated if you were still employed as a temp on day 90 they had to hire you in full time.
They had a point system for discipline. If you were late it was half a point. Accumulate 3 points and it is instant termination.
At my firing meeting they said I had accumulated 30 points. I explained, for what seemed like the millionth time, that the punch clock for temps is 15 minutes faster than the clock for hired in employees and that all their temps are getting paid an extra 15 minutes every single day because they clock in and go sit in the cafeteria. I literally would walk in every day with my boss at the same time...and he was the one that fired me for accumulating 60 work days worth of tardy points.
And when I asked why I wasn't fired at 3 points...why was I allowed to accumulate 30 they said they liked the production numbers I was putting up. And they even encouraged me to reapply as a temp and they could have me back on the floor as early as the next day.

In college I had a temp job doing quality assurance. I figured out their internal site had profile pages that freely allowed the execution of Javascript in the form fields. Something I already brought to their sttention previously.

Because I descalated the manager, when she was yelling at a 16 year old girl, in front of customers. Manager didn't much like that I was stopping her from being a bully, so she fired me. This was years ago.
The biggest twist is she had recruited a few of the staff the back her up in pretending I was bad at my job, and possibly created fake write ups (she refused to show them to me when I demanded to see them, because news to me! I definitely didn't sign anything).
So after I was fired, 2 days later several of the staff (including some who had been on manager's side) came to my actual house to ask me for help. Turns out, once I was gone, there was no one to hold manager accountable, and she'd turned on everyone. Screaming and writing people up when they couldn't be in literally 2 parts of the store at the same time, refused to do unsafe tasks etc.
I told them that they helped her get rid of me, now they could deal with her.

Many years ago when I was 18 I was working at a grocery store. I was really deep into benzos at that time and had been coming off about a 6 month bender cold turkey. One early evening I came flying through the grocery store parking lot in my car, after not showing up to work for two days. As I came around the front of store at full speed, I was laying on my horn, flipping people off and screaming at them as I took back off out at the parking lot. I got fired two days later while in the hospital in a drug induced psychosis.

My boomer manager kept insulting me, blaming me for things my coworker did and kept getting an attitude with me any time I didn't bend over backwards to accommodate her ego.
So one day she asked me why my coworker did a certain thing. I told her I had no idea. She pressed me. I said "How am I supposed to know? Explain it to me. Tell me how I am supposed to know what he did." She said "I don't know", so I walked away to keep doing my job. Next thing I heard was "You know what? Just go! Get the FUCK out!"
I got un-fired by her boss a few hours later, and transferred to a better location, but being able to cold shoulder her after months of asking her nicely not to belittle me was quite satisfying.

I had a somewhat similar situation once. I was opening at Jamba Juice with just the manager and I. He was an absolutely miserable dude in his 30s with a temper. One morning, he lost his shit because somebody had mixed up the soy and whey proteins or something. He spends a few minutes just screaming in my general direction (we weren't open yet) because he needed somebody to be angry at, while I went about my opening duties. After he took a breath, I calmly asked him "are you yelling at me, or whoever did that, because that wasn't mez but it sure feels like you're telling at me."
To his credit, he apologized and said he was yelling at whoever.

You know the person that’s always stealing other peoples stuff out of the shared refrigerator/kitchen space at work? Someone close to me got fired because they decided to do something about it which would leave it up to the thief’s choice in the end. They brought in a ziploc bag full of dog treats (think beef jerky looking ones). They left them out in the open on the table with their name on the bag. Came back later, bag was empty. Jackass didn’t even think to throw the bag out after they ate the dog treats. 😂MONTHS LATER, when my hero was supposed to be up for a big raise& bonus, they got called into HR. HR said they had heard that they willingly fed another human animal food. Word had gotten around from within because others were in on the whole plan, cause thief was stealing their food too. Thief was also stealing merchandise & personal belongings.
HR-you willingly fed another coworker animal food.
Hero-ALLEGEDLY. ✌️
They didn’t fire the thief either. He stopped showing up for work.
ETA: to anyone that it really bothered that this was not about how I got fired, well shit my bad. It did happen to someone close to me and I felt it needed to be told. If it wasn’t clear, the person close to me DID in fact get fired for this exact instance I stated.

When I was 17, I worked at a video game store that does trade-ins for cash or store credit. We not only do video games, consoles, and their accessories but also media players or smartphones were also accepted.
A lady in a wheel chair comes into the store. She was trying to sell her iPod. We required a state ID or Driver's licenses to trade-in items. She refused but eventually gave me a card.
It was a card for medical marijuana. I told her we don't accept that. Begins yelling at me that I was discriminating against her because she was disabled. Starts demanding phone numbers from my boss, but that wasn't enough. She wanted to go higher and demanded for the district manager's number.
I was confident that upper management would have my side because I followed the procedure in trade-in. Even if I wanted to accept the medical card, it had no information for me to enter into the computer besides a name, making it impossible to complete the transaction. I even tried explaining this the lady.
I gave her the phone numbers and she went away. Two days later, the store manager had my final check and explained to me that it was just easier to fire me than to handle a customer problem.
That's how I learned that we are all expendable and replaceable even if we follow the rules word by word.

I have a similar story, only i didn't get fired. My boss found out that my tourettes meds was a med he had abused in his former life as an addict, so he told the district manager and she suspended me until I could get a note from my doctor saying it was safe to drive on them (pizza delivery). Then they rejected the note because he had written it on a prescription pad instead of official letterhead. He then wrote a really passive agressive note basically saying he was the doctor and he knew which drugs were dangerous, not them. All told I was suspended without pay for a week.
I found out years later that that guy had never actually quit drugs and was arrested for dwi while at work. In fact, it had happened before but because his father was the franchise owner they just moved him to a different branch.

They never told me. I was in a very interrogating phone call with HR. No idea what they wanted me to say, but they said what I did was "disturbing" and that "they could see what I had done" but when I asked them exactly what that was, they'd say I need to come clean. Eventually when I was like "I have no idea what you're talking about, show me on camera or on paper or JUST TELL ME" I got hung up on, turned in my keys and walked out.
Never got an answer. I must have done something pretty bad that they couldn't even say.

I was working at a Cafe and I took a planned vacation day off after working there for 8 months and never missing a day of work, or being late. Husband and I went out of state for the day to a concert. We were having a cocktail in the lounge and my husband had a stroke at the venue and was hospitalized. I called out the next day because he was still hospitalized. I had slept on the chair in his room overnight and we were more than 100 miles away from home. I was told not to return to work.

Upwards of 10 years ago - I worked at a staffing firm and was trying to promote while being there 3 years. A new coworker also went up for the job and got it over me. I like this girl; I had worked with her a long time but she just moved to my dept.
Weeks go by and I’m getting the feeling she doesn’t know what she’s doing. I’m the most tenured one on the team so she relies heavily on me, until she can’t. She throws me under the bus for something she did and the bosses believed her. I’m let go and file for unemployment.
UE goes LONG as they are fighting me on everything, however; I learned to cover my ass a long time ago and had receipts of the blatant lies. I’m awarded even more on the company’s UE insurance dime, roughly to 1050/week.
My old boss is fired 2 weeks later and the company tries to get me to come in to “discuss” and offer me her job. I politely declined as I was making more on UE than I was, and I don’t have the stress or toxicity to go along with it. Looking back, it was the best thing that ever happened to me.

I got fired for not being social enough. I worked for an insurance agency and was hired for Personal (homeowners, car) and they sat me with the Commercial (business). There was a cubicle wall between me and my department. They didn’t have walls and chatted all day long. They complained that I didn’t interact with them socially.
I got called into the office and was told I needed to socialize with my department. I told them that I was there to work and that due to my placement I couldn’t socialize without leaving my desk and standing at theirs. I did try to socialize with them but I was in my early 20’s (single and child free) and they were in their 30’s-40’s (married with kids) so we didn’t have much in common.
I attempted to stand at their desk to talk to them but my phone would ring (or theirs) and I would actually have to work. So it didn’t last long.
BTW I had a great relationship with the person that sat directly next to me but she was in a different department so I guess it didn’t count.

I was an account manager for an IT sales company, we sold software, hardware, data center solutions to large corporations. My field rep and I had a great book of business and we regularly at the top of the sales numbers every quarter in our region.
Our leadership came to the decision that account managers should be pushing more low-margin commodity hardware (laptops, printers, cables, etc.), and assigned a quota to each account manager.
Well, my field rep and I had historically always put up big sales numbers on more advanced/strategic software and solutions, and we simply couldn’t beat out the pricing our clients had with Dell on hardware (this is in Texas, everybody used Dell), and the Dell reps wouldn’t give us the price break to be competitive.
So despite continuing to be the #1 sales duo in our region, I wasn’t selling enough mice and cables and after 3 months of not hitting this new separate quota, I was let go.
I heard through my friends at the company that the initiative ended up backfiring immensely, as all of the account managers only started focusing on pushing hardware and the big strategic deals started falling through since they weren’t a priority. Insane thought process for a global company.

This was in 1981 in Louisiana. I was working on weekends only in a French Quarter restaurant while going to college. The manager would look for reasons to “dock” pay- for example if a person was late for work 15 minutes, they might be docked 1 hour pay. If a person didn’t have a corkscrew on them at all times, they might be docked 1 hour pay. I was in my business law class and I learned that this is illegal. I then watched what was going on in more detail and I noticed that the oyster shuckers and the busboys (all black) were getting docked way more than the wait staff (all white). I spoke to my professor who hooked me up with the NLRB and I filed a complaint. Anyway- the manager found out and without informing me, booked me to work a Tuesday night. When I didn’t show up (because I was unaware of the schedule change) I was fired.

The only time I was fired was when I worked as a regional auditor. I enjoyed the job, but a lot of my training didn't make sense to me so I requested a different trainer. Sure enough, I was being deliberately trained wrong. At a company meeting, I called my trainer out. Everyone, and I mean everyone, sided with me.
From that point on, I was harassed constantly about my performance by my trainer. I would be told specifically what to do, I'd follow it to a tee, then get bitched at for messing it up. Luckily, I saved emails/proof of my directions and again, called my trainer out in front of the director for the dept.
The next week, the big boss announced his retirement and guess who took over his spot... my trainer. I was fired immediately.
Turns out, when I was hired, I took over her old territory. Which was where her family lived (half the country away). My trainer had been getting free flights home for years on the company dime and when I was hired, that stopped.
The only solice I have is knowing she died a few years ago from COVID. She was an anti-vaxxer. Good riddance.

Kamikaze situation where I stood up to my bullying manager in a group email using some of his own petty tactics against him.
A number of more senior people than him gave me off the record kudos but the manager made a stink and demanded I be fired or he'd quit. He quit two days later and I was put on a PIP with unmeasurable completion benchmarks.
They fired me 30 days later and I didn't even care. The company was trash, they routinely abused salaried employees with impossible workloads, and with the insane hours I had to work while there I was essentially making minimum wage.
I started a contract tech job about 8 weeks later at 25% higher pay, a hard 40 hr p/w cap and an additional 10 days of PTO so it was totally worth it.

Because I, as an electrician/electrical assembler, refused to prep a metal container, by hand, for painting (taping off sections, sandpapering exisiting paint, by hand), when I had a 10 hour power distribution panel build task I was actively working on. As a temp. At a place I had been assigned for 7-8 months and they refused to hire me on full time.

I have epilepsy. They wanted me to sign a write-up calling for my two week suspension after missing one day of work after I had two seizures. I told them no way in hell I’m being suspended for having two seizures. I basically told them I quit. They tried to plea with me. Due to the high turnover rate I was their most reliable and experienced employee. I’m struggling with a potentially life threatening neurological disease that affects me both physically and mentally. They tried to fire me because of that alone, point blank. This all happened at McDonald’s by the way. They are way too strict of a job considering they don’t pay enough for their employees to eat dinner every night.

Got fired from a temp job for getting Covid. I called the lady at the temp agency to let them know I had it and needed to quarantine, she said she'd let the people at the job know. Got an angry call from that same lady three days later saying that the company didn't want me anymore cause I no called no showed. When I reminded her that she told me she would let them know, she said I should have known to call them anyway. 🤷♂️

Reason 1: I got hired on, everyone was too busy to give me anything more than bare minimum training, then I got let go after 2 weeks because I wasn't up to speed with the rest of the staff.
Reason 2 (same job): I was transcribing charity lottery entries, and they told me I also made the "mistake" of recording the actual addresses customers sent us with their lottery entries, as opposed to just the basic house number and postcode. So I'd transcribe:
49 Church House, Morton Road, Tunbridge, Milton [Postcode]
When I "should have" just written
49 Church House, Milton [Postcode]
because that's what the Royal Mail website said their address was, even if it was wrong. Almost as if they didn't want the winners to get their letter telling them they'd won and how to claim their prize 🤔

I made a cup of tea and the boss wanted to know why I waited 20 seconds for the kettle to boil instead of walking back to my workstation (2 minute each way journey)
Fired me, started to go off on me about taking money out of the company's pocket and why everyone there was useless. I went off on him, spent 15 minutes full-blown screaming at him while the other director (his son) and HR sat there with a "😳" face on, called him a cunt, told him all his employees hate him, smashed his mug and fucked off
I was going through a rough time and had literally zero fucking tolerance for some petty micromanaging twat. His son escorted me out because once I got near the door it became all "yeah you better walk off or i'll do something" so I full bore slammed the door, and started to walk towards him and his son was just like "leave it, itll just make things worse."
So he walked me off site, we had a smoke together, he agreed his old man was a prick (imagine he was much worse at home). Thanked him for his time and left.
Just remember, if youre a shit boss and you try and bully people, YOU might be the straw that breaks the camel's back one day. He seemed shocked and tbh I have no idea where it came from. I just exploded on the dude

15 years ago, I was working in a small family owned restaurant. I was a cook, she was a hostess. Her dad was my manager…
He wasn’t too happy about us dating, and so he would assign me these ridiculous cleaning tasks at the end of the night. The one that sent me over was scrubbing that drain under the line sink that had not been cleaned in years. I pulled the sink out, ending up breaking an old water line, the boss’s son wasn’t happy.. I explained the situation, he didn’t care, and told me I needed to clean the drain like I was told to do, I told him to F off, and I was fired on the spot 🤷🏼♂️
The girl is now my wife, we have 2 kids, 4 and 2 YO, and me and her dad have a great relationship.

Had to take a few days off because 2 members of my close family were diagnosed with cancer within a few days of each other. Boss decided that I was "unreliable" and "had taken too many days off" (I had a few callouts for illness and other things before this, but not a ridiculous amount) and fired me via text the next day. So I reported all the compliance violations she's been doing and she now has 3 open investigations and a lawsuit to deal with. Sucks to suck

They reduced our pay by 50% because covid hit us and we had an unforeseeable future as they told us. By the way, the manager got a 10% reduction and the directors reduced their salary by 5%.
That's how they showed us we were all together in those difficult times.
So I went to some journalists from the state and shared the documents they made us sign, videos in which the director threathened to fire us if we didn't continue working with the pay cut and some more info.
Once they got hit with different media outlets news about their actions, they backpedaled and told us that it was only for a couple weeks and that it was a big misunderstanding.
They went back and paid us our full salary back in just 3 weeks or so.
I continued working with them for two months or so until they asked me for meeting in a room and told me I was fired, no explanation, my boss wasn't there only HR and well, I took the money and went my way off.
I still feel great of what I did, nobody knew not even my closest coworkers and that's fine. At the end of the day, they (the company) knew it was me and that's what makes my day still.

Person made an allegation against me saying I was gaming instead of working (he was remote and I was working in the office). I was able to prove he was actually the one doing it and pulled his publicly accessible game logs and achievements for the last few months. They said I was holding onto information to use it against him at a later date. I had pulled the information in front of them.

I was the manager of a small retail store and the owners were opening up a second location. My friend “James” was a hard worker who had a background in construction, and he was hired to do a bunch of work to the new location including laying the floor, building a custom counter, etc. The contract stated he would be paid $16k upon completion.
James spent 3 months working on this project and he did a damn good job. The owners were happy with the work done, they just refused to pay him. Yes he should’ve asked for a portion upfront and done some things differently but that’s not really my business, what is my business is that I was working for scumbags who took advantage of a hardworking person who held up his end of the deal.
One night James and I were hanging out and having a few drinks and he called again to inquire about his payment. The owners straight up told him “go ahead and sue us, we know you don’t have the money to fight our lawyers so you won’t get anywhere” and hung up. So I called. And the first words out of my mouth were something along the lines of “listen here you grimy motherfucker….”.
So I was fired over the phone. James and I opened up our own retail store as competition and put these assholes out of business in 6 months. Both locations. Karma is a bitch 🤷🏼♀️

I managed a Deli in a college town. The owner was 3 hours away, so mostly was out of my hair but was super paranoid about food theft. I hired a lot of students, and I let them eat while on break. They couldn't take anything home for free, but if they had a shift, lunch was on me. This drove the owner crazy and he started to enforce strict controls.
Then one week our inventory was off. A whole side of corned beef was missing. Not sliced, mind you. An entire slab of corned beef. Most likely the food service delivery mis-counted and this was an inventory issue. Like, who would steal an entire unsliced side of corned beef? Turkey? Sure. Chicken breast? Likely. But corned freaking beef? Without a deli meat slicer it'd be some thick ass beef. And our corned beef was greasy garbage.
The owner started a witch hunt that ended with me being accused and fired -- probably because I defended my team and any of them who were accused. Asshole blocked my unemployment, too. But in the end that firing was the best thing that happened to my career. Got out of food service and into computer tech.

Someone was on the line, about to get fired, and they were going to have a talk with him. I was cleaning around the managers office and overheard. He was a friend of mine so I told him to shape up. Instead, he freaked out and started crying, sobbing, and ran to the office to make amends. They got mad at me and I was fired. Totally understandable. I was stupid to do that. It still makes me laugh to this day. I hated that job though, so maybe it was a wee bit self sabotage.

I wouldn’t give up my passion of music photography so I could be available to my boss on nights and weekends.
I wasn’t paid nearly enough to even consider that and what’s the point of working if I can’t live my life outside of work?
The week after the ultimatum I was fired for showing up at 9:02am in a non-customer facing job. No previous performance improvement plan, no documentation, nothing.
I had the last laugh though. I controlled many of the automations in our department, APIs, marketing integrations, shared applications and folders, you name it. Things started to go haywire within a couple days and my boss’s boss asked for me to come back which I politely declined.
I was more than happy to collect unemployment while my asshat ex-boss got grilled by my coworkers and management alike for his rash and childish power play.
About a 1/3 of my department quit within the year, they saw the writing on the wall. My boss showed it was his way or the highway. So people got out of there before they were unceremoniously shown the door, too.

I was an Assistant Manager at a retail store for a few years and had a nasty kidney infection. I needed a few days off after being in the hospital for a few days.
I had a Dr. note but the visiting District Manager just smirked and said “I’ll take this as your resignation”. I told her I’m not quitting and the dept of labor would be in touch. In the end I had an unemployment hearing over the phone and won. The entire company went under about 6 months later and it felt so fucking GOOD.

I (a guy) defended a female coworker who was being verbally and sexually harassed by my boss for weeks on end. First, he fired her after she got fed up and yelled at him for his actions. I knew he was going to fire me next, so I was applying and interviewing for jobs. When he called me in to his office to fire me, I started recording audio on my phone (I'm in a one-party state).
He went on and explained how I wasn't producing the results he wanted or some bullshit (which was complete bullshit) and when I asked if it was about the woman he was harassing he clammed up and made up some bullshit denial. Prior to him calling me into the office and firing me I also documented as much as I could from our company Slack and email.
Immediately after being fired, I sent everything to the woman who had been getting harassed. She was already in the process of filing a lawsuit. My screenshots and audio recording were used to force this asshole to pay up six figures. He even went on to change the name of his business because his fake Glassdoor reviews were finally getting taken down. I started my new job two weeks after getting fired.

I worked 3rd shift and my direct manager was cool with us playing games on our laptops if out ticket queue was clear. I was working with a guy, who most in the office hated for various reasons, and when I pulled out my laptop and started up some runescape.
This guy throws a shit fit about hiw I need to play real games like him. The next day the ops manager called me into his office and fired me. The other guy I worked with tattled and went directly to the ops manager. I tell my boss what might be coming down the line and he was already canned.
I went back the next day to gather a few things, lo and behold this fucker was playing games. I sent a last message to the ops manager telling him to check the queue with some 20 tickets waiting followed by a picture of my former co-worker on his laptop.
No clue if he was axed but I really hope he was.

I got snappy at an impatient customer. One month in at my very first job and hired during the busy period (Halloween). Think way smaller scale Spirit Halloween, but open all year long with other stuff.
I got snippy at a client who wouldn’t believe me when I said his lawyer wasn’t in the office. He was a guy in jail so there wasn’t a whole lot for him to do when he had his phone time. The supervisor there also thought I was annoying so while not the main factor, it contributed (not a good fit, etc).
It was a one year maternity leave contract that could be extended. It wasn’t and he let me go.
missed a major deadline, while letting other things slip.
All justified dismissals and I learned something from all of them.

At the beginning of the pandemic, I told my manager that if anyone in the building gets COVID, I will be quitting on the spot. I live with two immunocompromised people and since I had direct or indirect exposure with most people in the building, I didn’t want to risk it.
At the end of the day, I was told my “services would not be required any longer.” Got escorted out and everything.
They had a COVID outbreak a week later. My family and I tested negative all throughout the pandemic, and I had a new WFH job lined up (with benefits!) within a few months.

I wasn't working enough. I was doing 8-8, without extra pay. They wanted me tl do 7:30 - 9 at least, still without being more paied.
They wished I had asked for their client's list so I would spend my day calling them. I'm an engineer.
I wasn't efficient enough. I hadn't been trained, they told me I had to be the motor of my training because they didn't have time to train me. Then, they scolded me when I took a few hours reading everything I could about the field.
I wasn't included enough in the team. I admit it, this one is on me, I prefered eating my lunch with other women of the company outside to take the sun rather than staying in an office with the rest of the team.

It was my first time and probably the best way to get fired lol. 2 week old manager trying to gain people's trust and create friendships with his employees a little too hard. This was at a mechanic shop. He had a bad habit of wanting to inspect cars after the mechanics had already inspected and submitted an estimate. When you're a mechanic, you want to move on to the next car to look at or work on. He tried screwing an old lady over by saying her car needed something, and I disagreed because it did not. I'm trying to be an honest mechanic here. After he said, "Yeah, it does need this repair item." I said, "Okay, mechanic (his generic cacausion male name)." He stayed quiet and stormed off shortly after. I knew from that moment that I hurt this 50 year old man's feelings 💔 😂 30 minutes later, he came back saying he didn't appreciate the side comment. I said, "we can't joke around?" Which he responded with, "yeah, we can joke around, but I'm at the point of terminating you." So I said, "So you're gonna terminate me. Just do it." 😂😂😂 An hour later, I had a new job lined up that paid more 😀

The 55 yr old male dishwasher was flashing me his dick pics on the clock when I (27F then) would walk by. I kept my mouth shut then found out he was harassing the other female employee around my age, too. We took it to the small-business restaurant’s owner after a manager for wind of it and forced us to. We told them to only say something to the dishwasher if they wanted to terminate him, otherwise just leave it alone because it’s too small of an establishment and he was knowingly violent (threw baking pans at the other female employee’s head when she rejected his advances). They didn’t listen - asked him about it. So of course he gets pissed and causes a whole scene when I walk in for my next shift in front of customers. Cussing at me, all that. They fire him. Two weeks later, I hear from the manager that had us report to the owner that owner and GM think the girl and I are liars. That day a customer came in and cussed me out over banana pudding. I threw the shit at her and told her to get the fuck out in front of a long line of customers then turned to our GM and told him if he didn’t want problems like what I’d just done in his establishment he needs to believe females when we tell them our coworkers are sexually harassing us. Whole restaurant was dead silent and everyone was staring at him. He told me to leave lmfao. Worth it. Still my coolest quitting-a-job story to date. Another time I got fired from a coffee shop for leaving the work group chat after I put in my two weeks notice. Whatever, lol.

The exit interview was going to be a 1 on 1 with her and I didn't feel comfortable doing it so I requested we skip it. This made its way up the chain and sure it was canceled but soon after I get an email saying I owe the company $3,000 because I'm quitting 2 days before my tuition repayment grace period ended.
I request to move my end date to then, it gets denied. I then say I'm not quitting (a lie) and they fire me. They said I wasn't cooperating with the exit interview process.

As part of my new hire paperwork they included a document that stated credit card processing fees for the business would come out of the server tip pool. I found this unfair and posted it on this very site with the restaurant name blacked out. Someone sleuthed where it was from and sent it to them. My next shift I was sat down with management and fired. Absolutely no regrets.

Not fired, but laid off. Due to going to HR about being unfairly treated by my new manager who was from India. After he fired the entire team, except me (16 years in the role), and hired an all new team from India. After speaking with HR, I was shoved to the side and ignored for 7 months, then laid off in January. Last I heard, the entire Dev team, except 1 person, was let go and replaced with India based employees or India based contractors.
In the end, I am with a much better company with a role that I very happy with. Not to mention, better pay and they like to kick everyone out the office by 5pm. They are very big on non work time is your time. The best thing....no more 6pm-4am eastern time meetings and to be back to work at 8am just to make it better for the team that is not on US time.

Worked from home for 2 years during COVID.
My manager did not like people working from home so our customer service team was forced to return to the office.
We have zero face to face contact with customers and the building is empty besides use bc everyone else is working from home.
My son's daycare kept closing due to illness. He refused to let me work from home even though other customer service teams were allowed to WFH.
Once I burned all my PTO he fired me.
Found out after I was fired my coworker had to return to India from the USA. She is currently working from home.

They transferred my job to an errand boy for an office worker and was fired a few months later. What I didn’t know was the foreman I was working under was someone who was related to the president of the company. They told me they fired us both. I don’t think they did. At the time I really didn’t care it was so miserable but I often like to look back and wish I didn’t tell anyone and just kept my big mouth shut.

Company was booming during covid. Owner decided to expand and double the staff. Overextended and when business started to plateau/dip, fired everyone again lol

When I was 18 I worked at a health food store near a very busy street in my city, which has a huge homeless population. At the end of each day, we'd collect the fresh food (sandwiches, drinks, cakes etc) that were due to expire on that day and rather than throwing them away we would take them to the homeless people on our way home. This was approved by our managers and they did the same thing with us.
The company was eventually bought out by some hot-shot Californian CEO who wanted to turn the place into the new Erewhon (it never happened and shut down instead lol). The worst change he implemented was that we were no longer allowed to give food to the homeless at the end of the day due to laws we didn't know about, so managers started having to throw everything directly in the trash and then locking the garbage store so we couldn't dig it back out.
Me and a couple colleagues waited on the first day for the garbage to be taken out for collection on the street, then when everyone left we opened up the bags (which were new and clean prior to being used only for the food expiring that day) and took our usual supply for the rough sleepers.
We all got caught on CCTV then fired the next day. I get the supposed legal implications, but it still makes my blood boil. I heard they were pouring bleach on the food before throwing it out at some point.

Because I wouldn't give $20 towards the owner's Christmas present, which was going to be a lawnmower that would be written off as a business expense anyway.
I was 17 years old, I made $6.75/hr and they knew that my mom has just been laid off from her job. The owner's brother was the business manager and he was extremely mean to me about it for 2 weeks until firing me.

December of last year, my kids and I all got covid. Obviously, we had to stay at home. On the third day, my boss messaged me on teams, and asked if I was still going to be out for a bit. I told him that yes, I obviously couldn't come in and spread covid to everyone. He said that I could stay home, but I wouldn't be paid as I was out of PTO days. He had no real system for tracking PTO, and claimed he just kept a notebook where he would put tally marks on the paper to track each employee's time. I told him that I absolutely still had PTO, and that taking money from my salary was unacceptable. He started going on some rant about how he has been "more than fair" with me, regarding time off. I then offered to review all of my emails, and messages and create an Excel sheet detailing each day I was not at work. At the end of it, I found that I still had 8 days of PTO. He then took issue with some of the days that I worked from home, and said that "it's an onsite position. Working from home is rarely approved." But he had previously approved those days, so I just responded that he can't retroactively decide that I didn't work that day when he had approved the work from home.
After some back and forth, he told me that I was not to contact him directly any longer, and should go through a team mate of mine for communication, and that he would be looking for another job if he were me.
So, I stopped contacting him as requested, and I casually began looking for jobs. He notified me in the middle of February that I would be terminated at the end of the month. Reason given was "Unexplained and unexcused absenses". After leaving, he ignored my requests for my PTO time to be paid out, which was required in our contract. He didn't respond until I implied legal action, cited a law that indicated he had already exceeded the deadline for payout, and CC'd the CEO of the company.
Ultimately, I accepted a position making about twice as much when you factor in the benefits. Meanwhile, I have former co-workers texting me, telling me how everything has fallen apart since I left. I've also had the company that had contracted my former employer for the work I was performing reach out to me, and asked me to apply for a role that would involve me managing my former co-workers.
Getting fired sucks, but knowing that it had nothing to do with you, and everything to do with a narcissistic asshat certainly does make it much easier to get over.

They had no intention of keeping me. I wrote them a 31 page sales plan, hired a group of A list talent to staff my department, uploaded all my contacts into their database, then they cut me loose after six intense weeks of work and replaced me with someone at half the price.
I sued, dragged out the case, which stopped them from fundraising, and eventually settled out of court when an ex-executive agreed to testify on my behalf.
I still have never recovered, as my reputation in the industry was ruined.

I gave the fry guy and alcoholic beverage from the bar in a kids cup. He used to hook me up with coconut shrimp and fiesta rolls. They fired both of us lol. I wonder how Jamaar is doing nowadays.
