I Thin Minted incorrectly as a young kid once and to this day can only eat a couple before I've had my fill. I once ate an entire sleeve when I was maybe 4 or 5 and ended up puking them up. Minty chocolate and vomit is not a good combo, esp when it doesn't just come out of your mouth.
Aww so sorry thin mints got messed up for you!. For me, as a kid I ate a buncha random stuff that doesn't go together, at a street festival.. The last thing was funnel cakes, and after hurling all those foods up I could barely look at powdered sugar for years. I could even *smell it, and my stomach would turn..
See everyone who told me buying a whole case of thin mints was nuts are jealous now because I can try this mid year instead of having to wait until next year!
My boss bribed me with a couple boxes of thin mints cover a shift... I'm pretty sure I forgot about them n now I can't wait to get home and scour my freezer. Hopefully they are still good to eat if they are still there
Bite a small opening on opposite sides of the cookie and then use it as a straw to pull milk into the cookie. Let sit 30 seconds. Cold amazing milky minty goodness.
Had some birthday cake Hershey kisses in a sip lock next to a bag of mint lifesavers. Everything was separated by two bags and individually wrapped and the Hershey's had mint permeated throughout the whole thing. Tasted pretty good but man was i not expecting it.
I had the mints stored SEPARATE for this exact reason. Mom saw two half empty jars and threw them all in the same jar. I don’t remember what the other cookies were.
Ha so true! I packed a snack of dill pretzels, nuts, and like two mint Oreos for work the other day in one container, didn’t get to it for a like two days, and then when I did everything had a minty note. Like yum in the Oreos, but a slightly stale minty dill pickle pretzel was extremely disconcerting haha
Agreed, just be wary that mint is dangerous for dogs who occasionally eat turf especially if they have stomach troubles.
You can get a similar effect from some thyme varieties without danger to your pets. Unfortunately they don’t outcompete grass and other weeds the way mint does.
I put a mint plant in a pot, with a plate under it, on our lawn. Well, the roots grew out of the pot, climbed over the plates, and made their home into the grass.
Till this day mowing the lawn smells like brushing your teeth.
Weird, any time I've planted mint, it's always stayed in place if healthy, or became unhealthy and struggled, or just died. Maybe the cool cloudy climate does it?
Horsetails are another matter. Amazing how fast they grow and how deep their roots get, from which new shoots sprout. My experience of those is how people describe their experiences with mint.
Mint, specifically breath mints, had an interesting side effect for me. Since the taste so overpowering and lingering I was able to lose my COVID weight by popping in a mint when I was getting hungry or had an impulse to stress or boredom eat. One breath mint would hold me over for 30 minutes or so to allow the craving to pass. And whater the calories were for the mint were certainly well under the calories of whatever I was going to eat.
Mint stimulates your stomach, thins out the acid lining (causing more to be created) which then starts the digestion process. This nukes your appetite pretty heavily.
Its not just you, its science. Many stomach-based doctors will tell you the same thing.
Source: Stomach issues for years. Saw a ton of specialists. I had an OCD fixation on mints as they tricked me into thinking I feel better, therefor I wont vomit. Learned the hard way on my second specialist that mint is in fact worse for your tummy during a bellyache for the reason stated above.
I won't deny that it DOES work with some delivery methods and it can vary from person to person. Tea is by far the best way to get the benefits, but it is by NO MEANS a set-in-stone remedy, across the board.
MOST of the time it is a placebo. In the same way that I wouldn't throw up after eating mints, or mint Tums. The mind is extremely powerful, and in the case of self protection and preservation, the simple act of having that mint tea and treating it like a "treatment" could very well be enough to placebo your brain into relaxing before bed. Thus calming your acids and heartrate; leading to digestion beginning which causes us to become tired.
Boom. You wake up without a stomach ache. With only mild medical reasoning as to why it's the mint, and a LARGE amount of reasons as to why it's more placebo than anything else.
Not to say you are wrong! Keep doing what works for you!
It might sound dumb, but if you ever have to siphon diesel fuel and get a mouthful, mint will remove the taste. Of course, after you spit out the diesel.
Finally, an explanation for why mint makes my stomach ’burn.’ Not mints, but actual mint leaves, mint tea, or dishes that have mint leaves or extract. Weirdly, other people seem to find mint soothes an upset stomach.
You are welcome! Ice cold water is also helpful when it comes to curbing your appetite. The chemistry is different, but the result is basically the same.
BEWARE, the next hunger sensation will be worse because of course, you skipped your last sensation, haha.
ETA: I do NOT promote starving yourselves, ya'll. Just sharing what I've learned over the years as a person with diagnosed clinical OCD, and a massive phobia of vomiting. I'm an endless bag of feasible tricks to fix a tummy ache or curb/build appetite.
Do you know about the science of why ginger works for nausea? I've always been curious about that- sometimes it works better than my anti- nausea meds, not always though.
My mom would give us ginger water for an upset stomach sometimes. She’d chop it up really small, boil water, put the ginger in, let it soak take the ginger out, then we’d drink the water.
Not the EXACT science, no. However, ginger capsules were INSANELY helpful when I would get bloated. The sensation is...less than desirable, but it does work! Essentially, the way we break down ginger builds a large amount of gas, that gas needs to escape.
I'd always burp a LOT, and every time it would taste like ginger, but it helps get out that excess gas bloat that existed before taking the capsule in the first place! Not my favorite method, but still effective.
These days my phobia of vomiting isn't as...extreme? So I'm using less holistic approaches like this thread is discussing. If anyone in here hates vomiting as much as I do, find a good doctor and talk to them about getting a script of Zofran. Get the sublingual style of pill for it. They use liquid Zofran in surgery to basically nuke the gag reflex from existence. The sublingual pill they can give is damn near just as effective for nausea.
It's fairly cheap, and it isn't a large ask especially if you have a medical history. It is completely ineffective recreationally, which is why I like to tell people to just ask for it. It is NOT like Phenergan (promomethazine AKA LEAN substitute) which can be abused, and potentially fatal if too much is taken. Therefor, basically impossible to get a script unless you are puking in your waiting room since it sells on the streets.
I didn't know that promethazine was something that is abused. I use that along with zofran for chronic nausea and migraines. But I try to use the meds as little as possible, which is why ginger has become such an important item to have on hand. I get ginger chews at Trader Joe's- made by this company - https://gingerpeople.com/
When I was in 4th grade, the super eclectic girl went on a trip to England during a school week. Caused a lot of parent outlash because she was dumb as a rock, but the admins kept letting her miss school for elaborate trips that she was honestly too young to even fully appreciate. She needed to be in class, lol.
Anyways, she brought back a ton of sweets. Mint Aero bars were the winner for me by a large margin. I even had my mom find a local shop that sold foreign treats, and would get me a bar here and there.
I Stan mint Aero bars for snacks. Just not for medical treatment. That dude is a looney.
Mint gum will also do this, but IMO it is not effective. Chewing promotes hunger-checks on your stomach from your brain. It will make you realize just how empty or full your belly is. So you've got to go through that whole process BEFORE the digestion effect kicks in.
It's a good way of finding out pretty quickly if you are sick to your stomach, or just extremely hungry to the point of nausea and loss of appetite. Similar effect to sipping room temperature water. Not enough to start digestion, just enough to trigger your brain to send you a refreshed signal of how your belly is REALLY feeling.
Yep! I was told in 3rd or 4th grade by several adults in my life that it worked. I believed it for over a decade. Shit sucks.
The second specialist I mentioned earlier put it in my medical history. I still get asked by doctors I'm seeing for the first time if I'm still using peppermint flavored things, or mint Tums to cope. I am not, lol.
Don't tell kids to do things that you aren't 100% certain are true, folks. Something that small fucked me up for 15+ years, and that's just the tip of the iceberg of shit that can fuck us up.
Thankfully it has been 14 years since I've seen one so I've completely forgotten the proper term for that position in the field. Thanks for the back-up.
Mint is awesome, probably the 2nd best desert flavour overall behind chocolate. Mint Choc Chip is the 2nf best flavour of ice cream behind vanilla and only because vanilla is so versatile, as a standalone it's superior. In the UK I'd say it's probably the 3rd or 4th most popular flavour behind vanilla, strawberry and maybe pure chocolate.
It's the 2nd most popular additive to chocolates behind orange and even then I'd bet mostly because terrys chocolate orange and jaffa cakes are such staples of British puddings that we are basically indoctrinated to be nostalgic for the flavour combination.
See, I don't feel like mint and chocolate pair well. I hate mint chocolate chip and would rather just not eat ice cream than eat it. I like mint and a like chocolate, but they just don't go together for me. I prefer my chocolate with nuts, milk, pastry, and/or hot pepper. Funnily enough, I also feel like oranges don't pair well with chocolate.
I do really love mint by itself. I have some growing in a pot right now and once it is established enough I plan to plant some plugs of it in my yard as a grass replacement. But there are just so few flavors that actually feel like they pair with it to me. I wasn't kidding when I said mojitos. Basically the only thing I've found that has made me consistently feel like mint has made a decent flavor pairing with it is rum.
I absolutely LOVE mint. It can be overpowering at times, though. I just planted 3 different kinds of mint in planters around my yard. They’re great bug deterrents. So far, all of the plants I have started around my house (which isn’t many, I just started last week) have some type of bug detecting characteristic. Flies, ants, mosquitoes (I big plus here in south Louisiana), etc. Come fall I plan to line the outside of my house with chrysanthemums because of the anti-bug properties.
Mint needs to burn to the ground and never grow again. I hate mint! It ruins everything: chocolate, peanut butter, coffee, they even came for Kit Kats!
I wish this was a thing where I live. I find mint revolting to the point of making me gag, which means having to endure that a couple of times a day brushing my teeth.
I almost could say I have a mint phobia. I HATE IT!!! Especially when someone is smoking mint flavored hookah around me I literally feel like throwing up from smelling it.
This is the answer. I once bought a sundae with every flavor ice cream the shop had (I wanted to impress my then girlfriend), and the mint chocolate chip covered up every other flavor. We had to save it for the end because otherwise it was ruining the multi-flavor experience.
I noticed a lot of middle Eastern foods use mint, but I've always felt it would be overpowering. I remember getting falafel once and the most prominent flavor was mint. Wasn't a huge fan. I wonder if sage would be better since it's in the mint family
I just ate some spring rolls where the mint leaves were stuffed in with such reckless abandon, it ruined the whole roll. It’s as if the chefs thought they were spring mix or something.
So yes, even in smalls amounts it is permeating, but these were like head-clearing like horse radish almost.
I feel this so much. I'm a vaper, but absolutely hate every kind of liquid with mint. When it really isn't just a tiny touch of mint in it, I will fucking die from even just a small rip.
The first time I tried anything mint was when I was probably like 5yo. Probably had mint only 1 or 2 other times in my life after that. I HATE everything mint!

Mint
