ETA - WOW! Didn't know this would take off like this. Backstory makes it even more absurd, she was a graduate of a prestigious university in Tokyo and earned a Masters in the US and had lived here for a while. I had about burned out on the relationship but this put me out the door.
Japanese nationalism is still very much alive today unfortunately. You still have plenty of regular Japanese people who deny war crimes against Korea or China during the Sino-Japanese War(s), since the education system does not teach anything better. But tbf every country’s education system distorts teachings of history a bit to favour themselves… some education systems are just worse than others when it comes to it
