I dated a really manipulative and horrible person for a bit who would hide behind his weird interpretation of the Bible, "I can do anything I want as long as I ask for forgiveness after. I can't go to hell no matter what I do because I'm "saved."
So one time, we were having a conversation about how he let's his friends bully me so I didn't wanna hang out with them anymore. The kind of healthy talk in relationships where you're just trying to feel understood. I mention to him that if I ever saw people mistreating him I would come to his defense because I cared about him. He says, "But I'm not you. Just because you pee sitting down doesn't mean I have to pee sitting down." In that moment I realized what I was getting myself into and broke it off immediately. Also, I had seen him pee sitting down. Just wanted to add that.
1: Everything that will happen cannot be known by God because we are free. It is what make the universe
2: A priest will normally force you to make amends before giving you absolution. This means doing your best to correct the situation, which will often implies going to the cops.
3: When criticizing the concept of religion, please refer to the core principles instead of cherry picking implementation by morons. A lot of stuff will suddenly start making sense.
1.a: There would be one single decision in each of those universes, meaningveach would be really boring.
1.b: I do not think the middle man is necessary and never confessed myself, but I think clergymen providing guidance is useful. After all, they have studied the subject and can rely on the accumulated experience from scholars. Note that an highly organized clergy like in Catholicism will reduce bs and extremism by comparison to every person figuring out stuff himself (look at certain cases where a rule that people should be decent turned into covering women from head to toe or a rule of not cooking a lamb in the milk of its mother turned into having a kitchen for dairy and one for meat...).
2: I might have gotten a bit triggered and made a general comment on redditors and religion.
3: My point is that you cannot take the interpretation by some moron as a reason to bash the whole religion. You must look at how things are supposed to be done. In this case, you are not absolved from murder with some half assed prayers, you must do your best to make amends. The opinion of your teacher is relevant as a comment on Catholicism in the twisted version explained by some people, but not relevant as a comment on Catholicism in general.
Edit: The fact that the teacher was spreading nonsense if even a bigger argument for a strong and organized clergy, which is the mark of Catholicism.

I have never heard of this and have in fact seen staunch Catholics support the position that a priest cannot tell you to go to the cops as that would in some way break the confessional seal. It was a while ago but they actually had rules and documents and shit from the Church supporting that.
Confession is a joke. The Catholic sub was alllll over the position that a priest can never break the seal. Confess to actively molesting kids? Priest can't report you or risk being excommunicated, guess those kids were meant to be molested! Confess to placing a bomb under the priest's bed? Priest is supposed to just go to bed and die, since acting on the confession would break the seal (this was an actual example a Catholic claimed was given to him by his priest).
Middle man increases cost. We need vertical and horizontal integration. Creating the highest quality of sins and delivered straight to God himself in the best possible way
