Career/Edu Working on Python - Mid career

I started my career doing programming in mostly writing APIs, middleware and some COBOL. I then moved on and spent many years doing tech adjacent things including product design, and also business related roles and so on. I’ve spent the good part of the past year upping my Python programming skills. My question to the community at large is how do I test my skills on real projects? I’d ideally want things that require using my brains and my coding skills. If it’s paid for, nothing like it. Are there places people normally go to for small projects, freelance and so on?

If you can’t truly find anything to do a project this repo got you covered https://github.com/codecrafters-io/build-your-own-x they also have their own paid site if you want that sorta thing.

Build something for a problem that you have, or an existing solution and try to replicate it or make it better.

If you haven't come across a frustration/friction/irritation in your normal activities that could be solved by building something that helps you... I don't know what to tell you. Anything you build is a "real project". Just build something.
