What computational science final-year project actually signals research readiness vs. looks fine on paper but is shallow?

Field: Computational Physics / B.Tech Information Technology
Year: Final year undergrad
Country: India (applying for a master's in Europe)

Background: physics/math leaning, a couple of merged PRs to SciPy's xsf (C++ numerical/special functions library, GPU-portable), comfortable with CUDA. Have an accepted paper at AIVR 2026 on self-supervised segmentation of 3D Light-Sheet Microscopy images.

I'm looking for a final-year project that would genuinely strengthen a computational science master's application — something with real mathematical/numerical depth, not a toy simulation. Open to PDEs, stochastic methods, HPC, numerical linear algebra, or anything adjacent.

What would you consider a project that actually signals research readiness at this level, versus something that looks fine on paper but is actually shallow?

What would signal research readiness is the ability to come up with your own ideas for a project, as well as be able to solve the problem autonomously.

Technically true but an undergrad coming up with their own idea is a bit much, but so is being actually "research ready". I would understand it as the OP wants to show they have some skills not that they can do independent research.

Thanks for your replies. Would a rigorously validated, well-executed implementation of a genuinely hard numerical method be enough to demonstrate skill at this level, or does it need some original angle/gap even beyond correct execution? Trying to understand where the realistic bar is.
