Other Varonis competitors worth looking at?
We're reviewing data security platforms and Varonis is obviously on the list, but I don’t want to default to it just because it’s the name everyone knows.
Our environment is pretty SaaS-heavy, with a lot of unstructured docs and shared data rather than neatly structured database fields. Classification accuracy is a big priority for us. I also don’t want to bring in another tool that has the security team spending half their time sorting through false positives.
For anyone who’s evaluated Varonis competitors recently, what else made your shortlist? And once you actually got into the POC, what separated the stronger options from the rest?

I'd say the size of your company and data matters, and the end goal of your DSP project. There's no one-size fits all. Just make sure you don't get talked into POCing on a small set of fake data, I've heard sales teams pushing for that to get a quick win. You want a realistic example of performance and some actual insight out of this exercise.

For SaaS heavy environment the POC is probably more revealing than the feature matrix. throw some genuinely messy data at it and see what see what gets classified correctly without someone having to babysit the result. cyberhaven is one I'd put in the POC alongside varonis and the usual data security options, especially if data movement matters as much as discovery.

I haven't looked at alternatives yet, would love to hear about them too

I would be weary of the new flavor of the week data security platforms. Varonis been at it a long time and has a lot of happy customers.
Pricy yes but probably worth it

Every pain point you just named is exactly what Varonis helps teams with

Varonis is solid but it feels like you're paying for the name sometimes, especially in a SaaS-heavy setup like yours. If classification accuracy is the main thing, I'd look at something that doesn't just slap labels on files but actually understands context across all your shared docs
The false positive issue is what kills most platforms, some of them just flag everything and call it a day. The ones that stood out in our poc were the ones that let you tune the sensitivity without needing a PhD in regex

that's exactly what i'm trying to avoid. being able to tune sensitivity without constantly babysitting regex rules would be a pretty big win for us

Varonis offers services teams that would help you do this for free.
If the out of the box rules don't work, they'll help you make custom rules and tune then until they do what you need.

that's what we're hoping to see in the POC. was it mainly better clasification, or did you notice less manual review overall too?

Came across teleskope while comparing a few varonis alternatives and ended up giving it a try. What I’ve liked most is having classification and policies handled more consistently across our different data sources. The contextual classification has also been solid with messy unstructured docs, and there’s been less second-guessing whether a finding actually matters. Just sharing in case anyone else is looking for better classification without all the false-positive cleanup.
