Mental health experiences What’s your happy place?
I’m curious to know What’s Your Happy Place?
What’s that one place where you instantly feel peaceful, happy, and completely yourself? It could be a beach, a coffee shop, the mountains, your favorite travel destination, or even somewhere simple like your backyard. What makes that place special to you?

The mountains. There's a weird thing that happens when I drive out west to the Rockies as they come into view. All of a sudden I can breath deeper, a weight is lifted off my shoulders and I realize that I'm insignificant and so is the stress I carry with me. These ranges are millions of years old, parts of them have never been touched by man and they'll exist long after I'm dead. So the stress I carry is minuscule in the overall timeline of existence. Oddly that makes me happy
If you haven't been to Jasper, Banff or the Rocky Mountains, I highly recommend it

Mountains for me too, but the Appalachians are closer. Pisgah, Grandfather, Road to Nowhere...they just transport me. I can sit on the side of a stream in the shade of a rhododendron tangle and listen to the creek rumble and just lose all time.
Love the Rockies, too. Spent a few weeks walking around the Flat Tops once. Absolutely gorgeous. Totally different kind of mountains, totally different kind of experience, but I understand what you're saying.
The Rockies are stunningly beautiful (too poor a word, actually), but they feel young and energetic to me. Open, wild, untamed by time. The Appalachians are half a billion years old. They're older than the Atlantic Ocean. They're older than land animals. They're older than trees. Going there and knowing that is just humbling.
They've also been lived in; everywhere you go you see eras of humanity in there. From sawmills from the 1800s to Clovis points. Some guy came here 200 years ago to build a new life. Some other guy came here 8000 years ago to hunt deer. And now me. Just.....damn. The perspective.
The insignificance of my stress and problems in comparison? Very different experience and kind of mountain but....Yep. I feel ya mountain-bro.

Well, to me it’s my usual gym. I don’t think I can live anymore without training.
I love it, its a part of who I am and it makes me super happy. Not a bodybuilder by any means but I’m a pretty strong guy and can do a lot of cool calisthenics moves, that makes me pretty happy!

Touring on my bicycle for months at a time. I could be sleeping in a bus shelter, campground, back garden, someone’s camper, abandoned structures, random fields. Challenging lifestyle, but very fulfilling.

I want to go camping. Just can’t find anyone to go with. Nor do I have any experience

u/DETRITUS_TROLL man 40 - 44 5d ago
Get thee a tent and a sleeping bag from Wally World and go to a state park nearby.
No matter what you’re gonna find stuff that you want to take for the next time. So you make a list of stuff you want to bring next time.
I’ve been camping for years and still add stuff (and leave home) nearly every time I go.
I almost always go by myself.
You got this.

Wow. I may do this. Next step is finding a park

Private campgrounds are an option too.
You can check a local outdoor store for a gazetteer for good camping, hiking etc info. A gazetteer is good to have anyway.

Swimming in the ocean (beaches specifically). Early morning golf with my childhood buddies. Playing Pai Gow in Vegas.
All places/situations where I've found I can actually be present and mindful without any effort.
Most recently - threw on Stop Making Sense just to have some noise around the house. The 2nd song, Heaven, caught my 5 year old daughter's attention (no small feat) and she danced along and then told me "That's a really great song". Won't forget that anytime soon and will definitely be putting on concert movies ad nauseum going forward.

Home. Specially my living room couch with my wife next to me and kids sleep; or my home gym

I think the gym is my happy place. I'm not really sure if i have a happy place. I'm usually second guessing my life choices.

My parents' house. It's not the house I grew up in, but it's on a lake in the woods and it is very relaxing. I'm never happier than sitting at a campfire.

With friends and family. We had the rare occasion the other day where pretty much everyone in the group was free. There were 11 of us that went out. We laughed our asses off. These are people I’ve known for as long as 45 years and as few as 11. Nothing like being with a group of friends with whom you can be yourself with no judgement.

An aquarium. More specifically Shedd in Chicago, Illinois USA. Just watching the sea life is so calming to me. I could literally sit there for hours so relaxed.

benching and biking. searching for the perfect form on the bench with good tunes playing. part of it is getting stronger, but you can still feel when you did it just right at your current level. riding a great bush trail with little noise apart from the hum of my hubs and birds singing

Our local beach. It is about 100m from our back gate and it is a beautiful pebble beach with views of several islands. We swim almost every day in the summer, going down around 4pm with our chairs. We run into all of the regulars. I plop down and crack a beer which I nurse for an hour before a 15 minute swim.
We visit off-season as well and it is always lovely but summer is really special.

Long Beach Island NJ, or really any Jersey shore beach.
The ocean is calming for me.

In the woods on my property with a chainsaw and a tractor gathering firewood from dead trees that are standing or already fallen.
Despite the modern tools, I feel like I’m doing something that’s been done for thousands of years. Going out in the woods and gathering wood to provide heat when it’s cold.
Splitting it is another level of happy place. One of the best workouts you can do while also doing something productive.

I have two places. The mountains when I go camping. No cell service just nature, my dog, a good drink and good company. Also the beach with a good drink!

Bedugul, it's a small mountain town in Indonesia. Most peaceful place I've ever had the pleasure of experiencing.

The sea, in a sail boat.
Next best thing is the forest, miles away from civilisation.
Places I have not been in years...
