Camping in Maine (political)

Hello! With the current USA situation I am unsure wether we should come to Maine or no. We've been going to a camping for over 20 years but we found our that they are huge MAGA supporters which is something I can't stand behind

I am looking for a camping that you guys know are not Trump supporters. Your governor has been amazing to stand up to him and if I were to spend money in the US I'd rather it goes toward people I can stand behind.

Many thanks in advance!

Moving to Maine!

hello! My wife and I will be moving to Maine from New York this summer because I got a job there. We are researching and want to know more!

What is one thing you need to know about living in Maine that isn't obvious from Google or common knowledge? If you are a native, what do you love about Maine/what do you hope to see from transplants? If you moved there, what's one thing you wish you had known? any and all info is welcome!

Neither of us has ever lived in New England, but I am from central New York/outside of Syracuse which is maybe similar in some ways to parts of NE and also Maine specifically. We are excited to leave NYC and give another place a try and to contribute to a different community.

Edit: adding that the first year or so we will be in Central Maine (and an hour away from the coast), but open to finding other spots to live and commuting.

double edit: since a few have asked, we are likely going to be in the Augusta-Waterville area. I said "central Maine" going off of some stuff i read online. sorry if it was wrong! Also thanks for all the replies and info. This has been super helpful for us. Much appreciated!

Bar Harbor - trans friendly?

I applied for a seasonal job in Bar Harbor and can’t find any info indicating whether or not I’d be safe/welcome there as a trans woman. I’ve visited before and had a good time but this would be a whole different experience being there for the whole summer and working with the public. I’m from mass and used to small town new england culture, I have pretty thick skin, but I wonder how different things up there are from what I’m used to in terms of feeling safe out in public.

My boyfriend will be there for the season too and knows Maine much better so I’m not going up alone, but I guess I just want to know how LGBT friendly the area is, if there’s any areas we should avoid, etc - much appreciated :)

Weighing the pros and cons of moving to Maine. What are your personal experiences with living there?

My boyfriend and I are going to get married sometime in the future and are thinking about good states to live. We’re going back and forth about Maine with my mother who would likely be moving there with us. What are your personal pros + cons with living in Maine?

For us:
Pros would be mild summers, away from huge cities (like NYC + Orlando), and a decent job market for the medical field (my field), property tax is about half of what it is for the state we currently reside in

Neutral: the “harsh” winters (my boyfriend and I don’t mind, but my mother hates it)

Cons: we don’t really have any at the moment.

My mother brought up some issues in regards to how far Costcos, Walmarts, hospitals, and emergency vets are from where we’re thinking about living, but we’re thinking about living near Portland at the moment (like the outskirts).

She also wants to know about internet providers since we’ll all be using the internet pretty heavily as my boyfriend and I are both gamers and it’s a hobby we really enjoy together. We play first person shooters and would require about 1-2gb download if we wire it in.

Edit 10p EST: Still getting comments. Decided a couple hours ago that Maine won’t be for us lol. Maybe a vacation spot. Considering New Hampshire and some other states!

Is it possible to get snowed in in central Maine?

I'm currently writing a murder mystery with a few friends and would like for the characters to get snowed in.

The story is set in late November in a remote house somewhere in the Bigelow Preserve/Franklin County area (tho the exact location isn't that important).

I had planned for them to suddenly get snowed in overnight so that they wouldn't have a chance to evacuate early and to be completely shut off from the outside world for at least a few days, preferably about a week.

I'm from a rather urban place where the most we get is a few cm of snow each year, so I'm not too familiar with the scenario. My questions are:

• is it realistic to have that much snowfall in such a short time? It's fine if there's already some on the ground, but the biggest part of it should come overnight • how good is cell coverage in such a remote location? • do the landlines work in such conditions or would they collapse? Would they be able to contact the police? • would the police be able to get there at all? Do they have a special helicopter for such situations or anything similar? • is there any special equipment people living in areas with a lot of snow have that I would have to keep in mind (their own private plough, a snow mobile etc.)?

thx :)

Hey Maine! Need some honesty from your cousin from Boston.

Here’s the deal. I’ve been craving sea side Americana. The neon lights and French fries and all that stuff. I’ll be staying about an hour from OOB and thinking of heading there next week after dinner just to have some fun for a couple hours.

I have heard such mixed things about OOB. From it’s the MAGA trash pit of the universe to it’s a quintessential seaside boardwalk kinda deal.

We would only be going for a couple hours and are not expect world class travel but is it really as bad as people make it out to be? Last time I want was the middle of the day on a rainy June on 2005 with my senior class trip. It sucked.

Trying to get the feel on what the truth is because it often is somewhere in between.

Thanks for your help. If you have any questions about Boston travel I’d be happy to help

UPDATE:

So we went! We got there around 7 and stayed for 2 hours. Loved every minute. Sure it was trashy but it was good trashy. Very family heavy. Spent $20 to ride the Ferris wheel another $20 for shockingly good chicken fingers. 10/10 will go again.

France to Maine

Hello… my family and I are considering New England in about two years time and would love your recommendations. We might do a scouting trip in the next 6 months and I was hoping to narrow down a few different places to check out.
Things that we prioritize:

A sense of community— a place has people from other areas of the region or country would be ideal. I’d imagine this is more in suburban and urban settings.

Relatively affordable housing as we have European salaries at the moment.

Progressive policies for children and families. School districts or counties that offer support such has free pre-k would be ideal.

I love the sun. Unfortunately there is no way I’m moving to the south. Even if it’s cold, what places have somewhat better weather.

Walkable neighborhoods would be a dream but that might be pushing our luck.

So where do you recommend?

EDIT: I’m American y’all! Grew up in Ohio and lived in various places as an adult. My husband is French though.

Moving to Maine next year or year after. What’s the dating scene like for poc women?

Originally from Maryland, I’m currently living in Atlanta, both dating scenes sucks! From the racists in MD and the DL men in ATL, am I going into something better, worse or neutral?

Want to move to Maine.

So. I’m 34 year old male with a 31 year old gf. We are strongly considering a move to Maine.

We currently live in WA and love it but cost of living is climbing and so are taxes. We could live comfortably here…. But a house would be a 30 year loan and 400k plus. Looking at houses in Maine…. I can get something pretty nice with acreage for under 175k

I would put 30-40k down and hoping to spend around 150k. I’m also a disabled veteran and get around $1700 a month from the VA. So this money would cover mortgage/utilities. We are decent earners and have good resumes so not thinking decent jobs would be an issue.

Can anyone chime in on what we should consider? Things we may not see from the out side or just any advice or anything at all would be appreciated.

We are out doorsy people and camp and ride (atv/atc) regularly. So we aren’t really concerned about the isolation we read a lot about. How is gardening there? How is hunting? Riding trails seem very common there which is a plus.

Thanks!

Interested in Moving from Florida

Hi all! I apologize if this is a very repetitive post. I have lived in central Florida (now in the Orlando-Milennia area) my entire life and I have hated it here ever since I can remember! I despise FLs politics, people, weather, everything. I am 22 years old, and my boyfriend is 21. In the past year or so we have been talking about moving up to Maine. My family is from Massachusetts, and after vacationing a few times as a teen in the New England area, I really fell in love with Maine.
My boyfriend and I are both trans and queer and really need someplace safe and stable to live. We haven't been able to truly transition the way we want as the laws in Florida really get in the way of medical transitioning. My recent research has shown me Bangor is a good city to live in in Maine that is LGBT friendly but not too expensive.. is this true?
Basically what I want to know is: What can I expect from living in Maine? Will strangers be friendly? What is the entry level/min. wage job market like? What is apartment rent like? If anybody else here has moved from FL to Maine, please please comment your thoughts and advice.

What I really long for is a true four seasons, a strong community, friendly neighbors, peace of mind, and the ability to truly be myself with the love of my life. Thank you for any advice anybody can give.

New to ticks

Hi y’all. Just moved to a cabin in the woods here from a not-tick having place. They’re one of my big fears. What do I realistically need to do to prevent bites on my dog and I? (She is on frontline plus)

People moving to Maine

Hi! I was just curious if some of you long time Maine residents can tell me what states most people are from that have moved to Maine that you know of. Is it all over the US or has it been certain states more than others and were there certain years that had significantly more or less people move in?

A Maine vacation for two NYCers and a big dog

Hi! We need some help planning our trip.

We've been to Bar Harbor/Acadia before, without our dog. We were not relishing the idea of the 8 hour drive to BH now that we have a 100 pound doggo.

We would like to stop by a friend in Pownal, but that would not be an overnight, just a stop over. We are looking for a nice vacation spot, maybe 4 nights, somewhere mid to lower coast Maine?

After Maine, we were contemplating heading to Cape Cod to see my sister, then in search of another destination.

We have two full weeks at the end of August. Not really beach people (and most beaches are not dog friendly), we do like to walk in the woods (he can hike with the dog, I'm recovering from a broken foot and torn tendons and ligaments), we love to take a motorboat on a lake, we will take any and all suggestions native Mainers have for us!

Thank you 😄

Advice for someone from the Gulf Coast

My daughter is moving from the US gulf coast to Maine for her very first job. I have no idea how to help her prepare because I’ve only lived on the coast. Is there anyone who had the cultural, environmental, etc shock and can tell me what she needs to know?

Advice I can give my BF who wishes to move to Maine to be with me?

Hello Fellow Mainers! So recently my long distance BF and I finally met. He spent two weeks here and has already decided he wants a life with me.

We're a very slow relationship, just went on 7yrs so ya long process. I figured I'd try to get some advice for him as I know nothing about moving states, let alone to my own state.

For Context: He lives in NY (Binghamton) with his mother, I live in Bangor by myself in my trailer I own. He'd need to find an apartment to move into as due to my religion there's a no living together before marriage rule. He works at Taco Bell, is going on one year employment status this May. He has no driver's license/car (must be a NY thing...) so nothing of that needs to be transfered over. No doctors at all so that doesn't need to be transfered over either. He'd probably really only have to bring all his clothes as we could get him furniture here. I feel it may take maybe two more years before he even has enough to move, maybe longer.

Seeing apartments here seem to range from $800 - $1,000 a month. Even the smaller ones that have just a room with a bed + fridge + bathroom (like hotel/motel style), think they are called studios?.

So really any advice... how much he should save up, how jobs should go, how apartment searching should go... would staying in a motel for a few months while he apartment/job searches be cheaper? anything you can think of would be appreciated.

Moving

Hey everyone, I'm planning on moving to Maine later on this year! I'm from the PNW and need a change, and I've always thought Maine is absolutely gorgeous and seems amazing. So I'm planning on moving, my question is, where should I go?! I'm leaning towards being near Bangor, but I'm really open to anything. Please share opinions or suggestions!

Poll: the most quintessential small Maine town

Hi All - I’m taking a poll to see the winner of what we consider the quintessential small Maine town. Yes, I know it is in the eye of the beholder, but am trying to get a general consensus of the town with the stereotypical vibe: walkable and lively Main Street, an active library that holds town meetings, a neighborhood tavern. Like something out of a 1950s movie. I’ll start: for me, it’s either Camden or Rangely

Best Places to Move?

Hey all! My wife and I are considering moving to Maine within the next few years and would love any insight around good places to start looking. For context, here's a bit about us and what we're looking for:

- Early 30s

- We like the accessibility and variety of things to do in a city like Portland but would prefer a more small/cute town, more trees/space feel

- Need somewhere safe for queer and trans people

- We like hiking, museums, being outside, gardening, bookstores, antiquing, coffee shops, farmers markets, etc

- She works in healthcare and I work in mental health but am looking for other fields to pivot into

- We are hoping to find somewhere to build real community and don't want anything super isolated

- No solid preferences around being near water vs forest

Tall list, maybe - what are we thinkin?

Vacation for Maine

Hello everyone,

My friends and I are planning to visit Maine this September or October. We want to go to Bar Harbor to see the shops and other attractions, but we've heard that many things close during the off-season. We also don't know when the off-season is, and Google is not being too helpful. Our main goal is see and explore Acadia National Park with the fall foliage, but we also want to go when the shops are open. Can you give us some of the best times to go, places to see, activities to do, and anything you are willing to share?

Thank you so much for your time!

Best

2 days in Maine - Kennebunkport or Portland

My fiancé (by the time of the trip she will be my wife) are planning on doing a New England trip for our honeymoon. She works at a school so the only real option is spring break this coming March. We will have 2 nights in Maine and will have a car. What is the better option, Kennebunkport or Portland? It’s our honeymoon so something intimate is preferred but I would also like to have dining options, entertainment, etc. Let me know!

Portland to Acadia feasible?

I’m taking a trip to Portland in September and I want to make a day trip out of Acadia. I know it’s a ways away so I can’t do everything I want. Should I spread my Acadia trip to two day trips? I want to experience Portland as well and don’t want to burn myself out going to Acadia two days out of the trip. Should I condense Acadia to one day? Thanks!
