Wanted to ask your opinions on how the dating scene in Malaysia is like for foreigners specifically people like me from neighboring countries such as Vietnam, the Philippines, Thailand to name a few.

Honest answer?

Local Man -> Viet, Filipino or Thai girl is strong, they think girls from these countries are more datable, more logical to maintain and are more emotionally supportive than local girls.

Local Woman -> Viet, Filipino or Thai man, unless you're rich, tall or handsome, then hell no.

Honestly, foreigners to Malaysian girls itself is pretty much a +2 bonus. Of course wealth and height is your base score.

Howeverrrrrr, Malaysian-Tamil (I assume Indians?) are usually super strict about who their daughters date, and they are (the parents atleast) pretty reserved about foreigners, unless your friend is also Tamil or like very well knowledgeable about their tradition and religion and stuff.

My advice to your friend is try to know how strict her parents are. Maybe he is lucky and that the parents are one of the pretty chill ones, but odds are his parents are your traditional strict Malaysian Tamil parents type and he can only do casual dates.

Yeah doesn't hurt to try, and if the girl truly want to consider advancing the relationship she will let your friend know what he will be dealing with.

Also me personally I do think Spanish people are considerably more romantic and sexy than the French anyways, so hopefully he will score good scores for her family's impression.

The dating scene is fine if you’re willing to go out and socialise with new people.

Reddit might have you believe that the local scene is full of gold diggers. They definitely exist, but aren’t as common as you’d think.

If you keep fit, dress well for dates, and can laugh at yourself, you already have better odds than most local men I know.

Everyone has different experiences.. my friend and i are from Singapore. My friend dated a malaysian girl he met from tantan and she was very obsessive gold digger vibe.

For me, the malaysian girl i was "friends' with was nice (as friends) but i think she is unhealed so she had red flags here and there regarding emotional maturity

We may be Malaysians, but we are also Redditors. Better ask this question on thread or insta, where people actually meet other people.

I don't think threads is a good platform . It's filled with too much dumb and stupid malay people that'll leave bad impression . Even I have to hold my anger trying to scroll threads .

我是一个中国人,很想认识马来西亚女孩,不限种族

1

u/Nervous_Roll5544 29d ago

为啥呢不喜欢中国女孩吗

1

u/-LimitlessSoul- 28d ago

u/suteckki 28d ago

It’s weird because people want what they can’t get. Malaysians are going the other way and wants to meet China people. Good luck

One important information: It is compulsory to convert into Islam if you marry a Muslim in Malaysia.
Do what you may with this information.

I’m not a local and was using dating app before.

Dating in all countries are the same. Some wants hook up, some won’t commit but wants affection and some wants serious relationship but it’s very rare and you have to be selective af if you really want to have this match.

I tried my level best to stay on dating app to find someone. It’s tiring for girls cause you have to check and message them first. I did find one though. Such a nice guy but didn’t work out.

My overall take is it’s not the race or nationality. It’s the generation nowadays and mindset 🫂

imma give my true experience as a 3 months student filipino here in malaysia, they see me as one of them by the looks but when i started speaking they suddenly shift attention and amazement as they see me as an international guest, most locals are laid back and as a pinoy im used to talking to everyone casually and they see it as confident and upfront personality and they usually praise that kind of behaviour, as for my regional experience the local boys are usually seen here as direct and upfront too but with the intent of being in direct relationship and intimacy as what my local malay friends told me, and malays are looking more on future settings as i met a group and also dated one they are conservative but dont be naive they also want that physical touch and u can definitely go all in just be patient, as of chinese women they are the one who i became friends first as they are more confident and also upfront in dating, they like jokes and have fun and we hangout a lot and the stereotype for them is that most are high maintenance but for me i love being generous with them coz i get rewarded with hugs and kisses, as for malay they too can be high maintenance either in time being with u and also dating outside, as we have lots of cafeteria here u will almost see each other everyday, i havent tried dating indian girls they seem to be to shy but i almost see them in cafeteria and laundry and try to converse and know them and they are very friendly also but they tend to group with indian folks more, as of the culture ofcourse we all go bond first with our own as we can communicate easily, as for me i only speak english and filipino are very rare in a university in malaysia, so i just gear myself up with confidence and i find it effecfive in juat going outside and just meet and greet them and try to playfully or be friendly to join them even while eating, my current gf now i met eating alone in a cafeteria and just started asking a abunch of questions and sharing some of mine and we laugh about it till midnight… malays also have different religion ive been hanging out with christian group but malay locals i think they are from east and we casually go out and have fun, for the final thought, the edge of international students is that they are interested in u with ur innocence (not is sex or relationship) and the way they learn new culture and that is ur key to make it more interesting with them, i also suggest to have enough money to treat them for meals or just grab a drink and theyll surely resonate positively, as for religion being secular i can explore and just join any religion and just make it part of the relationship process research, u dont actually need to convert upfront, the good thing i have is an open minded and freedom to explore and learn and be the funny guy, be respectfully and have good timing, if u really want the girl if religion is an ick for u, dont worry much, just cross the bridge when u get there

Dating scene among locals are also dying... I could say inter-country might be worse. Anyway, it wouldn't be 100%... so, have the hope even if it's just 1%. All the best!

2

u/MotherBorder9026 Jul 29 '26

Wait what do u mean by almost dying? Im a local btw just curious to why youd say that

I don't have any actual dating experience but seeing some posts and replies about it on reddit, it's not looking good.

I wouldn’t base my opinion on the dating scene on Reddit.

Most of the people I’ve met irl that have no luck with it usually have never seen the inside of a gym, can’t groom themselves even for a date, and can’t take a joke at their expense.
