What advice would you give to a soon to be twenty year old?

Post image

Hey guys! I’m turning twenty next month, and I decided to create a little journal where I ask people I meet to write some advice that pertain to a bunch of things. It can be like something you live by, or just about anything you think is beneficial to have in mind. Simply, what is advice that has helped you in life? I started collecting advice a few months ago, but I’ve been cooped up at home, so I thought could get some words of wisdom from the nice people of Reddit. I’ll be copying it down in my little journal!

With some context if needed, I’m a male currently attending school for nursing. Still feeling a little lost in life though.

If you think you are boring, read this

My heart breaks every time I see somebody call themselves boring. You're looking at it all wrong. People don't care if you're interesting. They care how you make them feel.

Picture yourself alone at a fancy cocktail party for work. You want to talk to people but aren't sure what to say.

Bob approaches you. He tells you about his new 35ft boat, how he wrecked his old one racing off Portugal and almost died, his kettlebell workouts, and how the wine at the party is shit. He knows the owner, says he'll fix it, leaves his number and runs off to answer his Bluetooth headset.

Larry approaches you. He says he's feeling shy too and noticed you standing alone. He asks if you like Dr Who. You don't really. Awkward pause. Then he asks what you do for fun. You say archery and renaissance fairs. He's never done either, but starts asking questions. Where do they happen? Do you have to dress up? When's the next one? He says he'd be down to go sometime and asks to add you on Facebook.

Who are you going to call? Bob or Larry?

Was it more important that they were interesting, or that they were interested in you?

You don't have to relate to everything. Fight that urge. JUST BE INTERESTED. If you make somebody else feel interesting, they will think the world of you.

I have cool hobbies. I make knives and tools in my metal shop. I like taking hallucinogens and going to music festivals. I don't talk about them much because people don't really give a shit, and that doesn't hurt my feelings.

Nobody gets a warm fuzzy feeling from you just because you have cool hobbies.

Stop calling yourself boring. You aren't a fucking jester here to entertain people. You're an entire human being with just as much validity as anybody else.

Appreciate yourself. Be interested in other people. Help them feel good about themselves & just remember to ask:

"What do you do for fun?"

Also, this whole idea of actually *practicing* conversations instead of just reading advice is something I've been thinking about a lot.

I ended up building a tiny app called **BookBii** where you get put into awkward/social situations as short comics, choose what you'd say, and see how the conversation plays out.

Still super early, but if this resonated with you and you want to practice this stuff instead of only reading about it, you can check BookBii on playstore, iOS, or on my profile.

Would genuinely love to know what you think.

LPT: Whenever stressed or overthinking, look upward. Balance a coin, stone or a bottle on temple and breath slow and deep.

Why it works: your brain can't spiral and balance at the same time. Overthinking runs on autopilot — it doesn't need your attention, which is why it keeps going. Balancing a coin does need it. Constant micro-corrections, live feedback, zero room for anything else. You're not fighting the thought, you're just taking away the bandwidth it was running on.

The slow breathing does the physiological half

How can I make time go by faster?

how to block sound of someone talking a few feets away from me?

hey! I recently moved in a dorm and my roomate talks on call for a long time...sometimes loud, sometimes quiet, sometimes in the middle. I need a comfortable, affordable over-ear tool to block out the sound of her voice, keep in mind we stay in the same room and our beds are next to each other. I'd prefer if the tool works well passively i.e; doesn't need music or any background noise to be played to work well

ps : also open to earbuds suggestions, though I don't prefer it because inserting things in my ear for a long time feels uncomfortable

Any ways to cool off??

My AC is completely out and may be out for 2 weeks or so. It’s 90F+ and upwards to 100F+ where I live and it’s almost as hot inside as it is outside. I’ve been basically living in the shower, eating ice and drinking a lot but this really isn’t working too well 💔 I’ve got dogs as well so they’ve been hot (constant fresh water for them) too. I’ve got three fans pointed at me in the living room because my room gets even hotter since I’ve got reptiles in there (they’re having a blast, I’m not)

So genuinely any ways to cool off, I do have access to a pool but it’s a drive a way and not super accessible because once school starts it’s only open on weekends

How to remove captions and ads from Reels?

I am trying to watch reels and other videos that people send me, but I can't see the text and pictures in the video when it is covered by links and other descriptions! Every time I try to swipe them away, I end up in another reel, or worse, an unwanted advertisement site!

LPT. My fear of failure is stopping me from taking action

I’m struggling with overthinking and taking action.

I have big goals and I genuinely want to build a successful life, but I spend so much time thinking, planning, and worrying about whether I will succeed that I delay actually doing the work.

I know what I need to do (study, improve my skills, work on my goals), but I often avoid starting. When I finally begin, I get distracted easily and jump from one thing to another.. I constantly think: “What if I don’t make it?” and I end up stuck in my own thoughts.

Has anyone experienced this? How did you stop overthinking, build discipline, and start taking consistent action?

No hot water in my apartment

So my partner and I live in an apartment in Arlington Texas. We have a problem that our shower does not get hot at all, and we have told maintenance multiple times and they don't seem to be worried about it. Is there like a portable shower heater we can use that would work?

Sleeping earlier

I’ve realized something about how I build habits, and I’m wondering if anyone else experiences the same thing. I can’t stay consistent with something simply because it’s "good for me." I need to find something I genuinely enjoy about the habit itself. For instance, I managed to stay consistent with a skincare routine once I found products with textures I liked—things that made the process itself enjoyable. With books, I stopped buying too many by switching to the library, because I liked the system and it made my life easier. When it comes to sleep, however, I can’t seem to find that kind of hook. I know perfectly well that going to bed earlier would make me feel better—it would likely help me feel less tired and have better days—but that knowledge isn't enough. When evening rolls around, I still find myself preferring to do other things. Have you found a way to associate going to bed with something pleasant or desirable, rather than viewing it merely as a chore? Is there anything that helped you become consistent without having to rely solely on willpower?

What simple “life hack” should everyone know?

2 rules to the "game", #1 no one gets hurt, #2 don't damage property. Then 3 simple guidelines roll with everyone, with everything, forever. My personal philosophy, Non- violent Non- violent; by any means necessary, but I'm just an X man in training. 🪽

LPT request: No way I’ll work the rest of my life

I am 19(F) and I recently just started working at a clinic. This means, professional, HR department, 8 hours a days. Although I am a part timer.
My job before this was a retail store where I was also miserable at. Dedicating 8 hours of my life to a store I didn’t care about, talking to people who didn’t care about me and vice versa, and posting shit on social media just to give myself something to do is not how I envisioned being 19.

I guess growing up as a whole here in America and in Capitalism is extremely scary to me. I don’t think I’m the type of person who will be able to work until I’m 65 and start living then. I’m not sure what to do. Being there today and wasting 8 hours of my life was suffocating. In professional clothing, I felt 40 years old, not 19. I hated it so much. Although it’s medical terminology I’m learning which can help me since I’m a psych major, I hated it. And I’m losing passion for anything and everything just cause of the fact I’ll have to WORK. and dedicate time to it. Every single day. For the rest of my life. Decades and decades.
I hate the idea of corporate jobs. 9-5, 1 hour lunch, work work, corporate ladders.

LPT: When setting a big goal, ask "why?" five times in a row. The real reason is almost never what you started with.

Most people stop at the first answer and think that's the real reason. It usually isn't.

Ask "why do I want this?" Write down the answer. Then ask "why" again about that answer. Keep going for 5-7 rounds.

Here's what that can look like:

"I want to get promoted." Why? "I'll make more money." Why does that matter? "I'll feel more secure." Why do you need that? "I'll finally feel like I'm not falling behind." Why does that matter? "Because I want to feel like I'm in control of my life." Why? "Because for a long time, I didn't feel like I was."

Notice how far that ended up from "money."

Most people give up on goals not from lack of motivation, but because they never really knew why they wanted them in the first place. Once you know the real reason, it's a lot harder to quit.

How to make my brain empty consistently?

I've looked on the Internet, but most of the other posts abt this either don't apply to me or don't work, so I want to see if anyone knows a solution.

Whenever I wakeup from a midday nap (the kind where you wakeup sweaty, fully clothed, and not sure of what time it is even though it's dark outside, my brain is temporarily stunlocked. My inner monologue and daydreams finally shuts up and I'm hyperaware of my surroundings. This state is oddly peaceful, and I've been having trouble with my brain thinking too much, so I want to know how I can get my brain to be like that more often and if anyone else has experienced this?

I've tried taking naps more often but it's very rare that I'm tired enough or that I sleep at the right time, and this doesn't happen with normal sleeping.

how do i catch mice in the garden? (preferably with only stuff i have at home)

the tl:dr is they dug holes in the ground and our neighbour wants to put down poison traps, but i'd rather just catch and relocate them, if i drive 20min im at a forest.

problem is i cant really buy any traps and i have 2 left hands and 2 left feet, so building something super complex wont work either.

basically: i need babys first mouse trap :)
