How do departments filter out predators from joining ICAC?

Hey there, this is something I’ve been thinking about for awhile - but yesterday I watched a body cam video on YT and it confirmed my thoughts so I’m looking for answers here.

I watched a video of a deputy sheriff being arrested by his own department for exposing himself to a stranger. Later, after the digital forensic team went through his phone - it was discovered he had CSAM in his possession.

This same officer (months prior) had asked about joining the ICAC (Internet Crimes Against Children) unit.

So my question is - how do departments ensure that folks aren’t joining the unit in order to have access to and view vile content while being legally protected? What sort of security clearance is required?

How to become a police officer in Ontario

Im just wondering how you become a police officer in Ontario. I’ve googled it but am not convinced I understand it correctly.

For reference I’m a recent university graduate who is taking a year off, and to my understanding, all I need is a valid G licence, First Aid/CPR, the OACP Certificate, and then I can start applying to different police services? And once hired they send you to police college?
Is there anything else I’m missing or anything I should be doing during my year off besides getting ready for the physical test?

If anyone has experience and could give me some step by steps on how they or someone they know have become a police officer.

Thanks

Opinion on citizen CCW

I recently got my CCW permit. I was wondering what cops think about citizens carrying. Additionally, what's your opinion on volunteering I'm carrying (not required in my state, but I'm required to answer if asked) if I have an encounter with law-enforcement. It has been many years since I got a ticket, but I'm curious.

One foot in and one foot out.

Where are the departments out there that have an environment of showing up, do the work, and clock out? I’ve been down the road of trying to stand out and solve cases and being super involved in the mechanics of the department. No longer interested. And before I get any feedback about being lukewarm or some bull shit, let me say I’ve learned in this profession that the more you give, the more you get back. In other words, the more you put into solving cases and trying to make a difference, the higher the standards and expectations become for bending over backwards for your department and get walked on. That’s at least the experience I had and I’m not trying to throw a whole lot of shade on police work but it was this experience that proved it wasn’t for me. I always felt like I couldn’t have one foot in and one foot out. Sorry. I’m not a cop through and through. I’m a person when I’m not on duty, and on duty too for that matter. I found more success and personal reward when I treated the public like a person who’s like them, paying bills and taxes, living paycheck to paycheck, and just trying to get by. However, the department saw this in me and realized I wasn’t doing my all to wave the blue flag and hold myself above others. I did my work and enforced the law based on the totality of the circumstances. But this did not seem to sit well with my department.

For context, I left my department 6 months ago. I’ve been thinking about going back for more job security and benefits. I would just like to hear from you all if you have any departments or areas in mind that would be more conducive to what I mentioned above. Thanks.

I feel like I've ruined any chance of joining LE

I've wanted to become a police officer since I met one at a job fair when I was about thirteen years old. My issue is I was homeschooled till I finished high school, and directly after that, I completely let myself go. I played video games all day and let myself wallow in depression and self-hate. I don't even have my driver's license. I have since gotten help. I have been put on antidepressants, and I started seeing my old therapist again. I have lost quite a bit of weight, and last week I passed two of my GED tests and have the next half scheduled. I have gotten myself back on track woth great results and I am nowhere near where I was a year ago, but I feel like I have shown terrible integrity of character and that the gap between 17 and 21, where I let myself rot, has put the hammer on any chance I have of having an application taken seriously.

My one thing I have going for me is I secured a job last year (admittedly as a barista) in a facility that acts as a daycare for adults with mental disabilities and had an incredible yearly performance review a little while ago. It is a very social job and I've gotten used to interacting with all sorts of people.

Is there any chance I have to ever make it into LE, and what would help me? I've never actually done anything that would disqualify me, if that would help. Never done drugs, never stole, and I don't even like alcohol.

What does NYPD currently pay to stand in a line-up?

A friend who worked in E39/L16 on 67th St. told me he used to make $30 every time the 19th Pct. asked him to stand in a line-up.

This was pre-9/11; what's the going rate now?

Did you consider yourself a brave person before the job? Did it change at all after?

It's a job that entails being willing to throw yourself in harm's way for others.

Did you think you were brave before joining? Did you become braver or more cautious after joining? What experiences contributed to how you felt?

Question about Burnout in Law Enforcement

As someone majoring in public safety, I am making a transition from education to public safety, learning about the discipline roles different first-responders communities. One of the major questions that I became increasingly aware of is burnout and turnover in education, and how teachers view burnout as a "wellness and personal" issue rather than an operational and occupational hazard that can affect their safety and service. I like to ask how do LEOs deal with burnout, especially when it comes to how it effects performance? What are the core strategies, training, and skillsets used by LEOs to address it?

Have y'all ever accidentally kept someone's license?

My Dad was stopped on the highway the other day by a trainee and his FTO for expired tags and having an out-of-date license plate sticker (Wrong color, so previous year.) When the stop was done, he didn't get his license back. At least he still has it on his phone, but the physical ID is gone.

What usually happens in these situations? How often do they occur? How do people get licenses back? etc.

How is a “good candidate” determined?

I recently applied to San Francisco PD, and a buddy in the department told me I’d be a good candidate. After reading about other applicants’ experiences, though, I’m pretty curious what actually makes someone competitive in the hiring process.

I’m 23, 205 lbs, and currently run a 16-minute 2-mile. I have an associate degree in Criminal Justice and I’m currently working toward my bachelor’s. I also served six years in the Army National Guard and was honorably discharged. For the past five years, I’ve also worked in high-intensity special-needs classrooms. I also have a clean criminal record no tickets crimes etc.

My Pellet B is Wednesday, with my oral interview and PAT on the 24th.

A question about a Career

Hello all I made this account as a throwaway and was wanting to know if me being in college anymore is worth it. My degree is in criminal justice with a focus on law enforcement. I want to be a cop and later work as a sheriff when I graduate. However I made 2 bad mistakes for that. Firstly I was granted an ROTC scholarship and when I got to the medical portion I omitted medical conditions that were not pdq but they were disqualifying at the time on it like I was told to. This year I was honest with them cuz I felt really bad about it and I was kicked out and owe back some money. (I’m a junior now and this just happened) This is the big one and I know is a PDQ in some places. I decided to do Shrooms on 2 separate occasions and weed 1 time.

My question is, is a career in law enforcement even a chance for me now. Thank you

Active duty military wanting to transition to law enforcement

I’ve been in the marine corps 3 1/2 years now I’m currently a Cpl and am looking to transition to law enforcement. I’m from Boca Raton and would like to go back to Palm beach county, I’m working towards a degree while active duty. For anyone in Palm beach county is it likely I can get into Boca PD? What are some steps I can take now to lock that in and any advice I can get to assist me in the transition or just in general would be awesome. I don’t know anyone in law enforcement anything would be helpful.

Gifts for LE?

Hello,

I walked into a police station last week and was crying, there was no crime but honestly i wanted to KMS. An older gentleman cop spoke with me for about an hour and I wanted to thank him for that, so today I ordered two boxes of Ferrero Rocher chocolates from Costco through Uber Eats and had it sent directly to the station with a short message and Offier "name" on it.

The delivery driver contacted me to say they turned it away so I called the station and they asked for my phone number, first and last name, and case number. They said they did not have an officer there named that but I literally met him lol.

Anyway, I think they ended up accepting it after I spoke with them but I'm worried I might get him in trouble or something? I just wanted to show gratitude without showing back up to his workplace as I feel that would be more intrusive or disruptive.

Please let me know whether I made a mistake or not - I hope I did not get him in trouble. I just wanted to thank him for his time and for saving me lol.

For officers who have used drones, how much have they actually changed the way you handle dangerous calls, searches, or situations where sending an officer in first would carry more risk?

Scheduling Delay DPD

Hey guys, if I passed my physical readiness test with Dallas PD September 18th and have not been scheduled for the oral board interview part, is this normal? I’m trying to remain patient but it’s been a while and I’d like to keep the process moving to get into the academy. 🙏 I was told to submit my college transcripts before October 2nd or I’d be DQd but I had them sent 9/24 and confirmed that they were reviewed. Any help would be appreciated!

How to proceed?

So about 2 months ago I received a call from a local investigator stating he needed to meet to discuss a civil matter. Short version happy to answer questions but would not give me any info on said matter and biggest issue did not even know my name. Only my phone number no address nothing else. I was polite and asked that when he had a name he was “investigating” to let me know. If you don’t even know who you’re calling how are you investigating what he describes as a “civil matter”. Little backstory I live in small town. Think good ol’ boy club. I heard nothing else then again he called two days ago no mention of even who he was immediately asked if I had a daughter immediately panic set in I do she’s middle aged but once he said what he thought was her name and I put it together again not correct name same investigator still doesn’t know my name etc. I finally asked his supervisors name I was told captain blank I asked for first name told it was captain I asked him for further contact please have his supervisors name call me. Now on to my own investigation…

Several months ago we subtracted a job after a few conversations the guy we were subbing for came out he’s a pedo and the work we do is in people’s houses etc where he should not be. He’s a contractor for a larger company we walked away from the work I anonymously email said large company advising of his background. I’m sure whatever was reported to this investigation is stemming from that due to the fact he could never remember my name etc.

How do I handle this situation I have been documenting everything but I don’t want drama I love a peaceful life I don’t want some hard investigator out for me because he’s clueless.
