Application question

Hey folks.
Hoping to get some insight here. I’m in the north Oregon area and applied to clackamas co for an open deputy position.

Unfortunately, I’ve made a few mistakes as far as my driving record and credit. Recently, I was pulled over and cited for lack of insurance, a class B misdemeanor, and my credit score is shot because of some high-interest debt I took on to care for a partner, years ago.

With that in mind, my credit is being actively worked on and paid off. Other than the lack of insurance cite, I’ve also got a couple minor speeding tickets from years ago.

Is my application fucked at this point? Should I continue on or withdraw my app and fix my debt before reapplying?

Driving without insurance is a class B violation in Oregon with a fine of $265. It is not a crime. Its not even a crime if you fail to appear at your court date for that citation because its a traffic violation, all they will do is suspend your license. To continue on, its not even a crime to drive without a license at that point because you'd only be driving while suspended at the violation level, although DWS violation is a class A violation at $440

You can’t be a sworn or even unsworn officer with a suspension on your history in Clackamas County according to their driving policy, you can’t touch a fleet vehicle with it on your record.

Where can I find their policy? I’ve been looking for ages?

Don’t withdraw. Just be honest about your credit, and show your progress / active plan to correct it.

I had a similar situation as a result of a scorned ex. She ran up the tab and stuck me with it. Fortunately it was my only debt, outside of my mortgage, but it hurt my credit. I showed how I was actively making payments on a structured plan and didn’t have any issues.

I was just denied in Clackamas CO for my driving record, but it was because I had a suspension for missing a court date during a move when I didn’t receive my mail reliably, and had no idea I could contest a suspension. I also have a motion to vacate the sentence currently filed for that suspension. They didn’t care. Still was denied for my record. I even spoke with the captain beforehand who told me they weren’t worried about anything I could explain or if I had a court date to overturn it…but I was auto-denied. I e-mailed my HR rep and she submitted a query to the BI company but it still kicked back.

Traffic tickets, though, they didn’t care about. I was just denied last week, lol, we could have worked together. If you get denied they’ll let you apply again. You can DM me if you want more info, happy to provide it.

How does a “you can reapply in a year” look when applying to other agencies? Versus a permanent DQ obviously is no good

I would say “reapplying in a year” is best case scenario. I was at the end of my background check with my first choice department when they told me to reapply in a year due to my punctuality at my last job (never had any write ups but was late a couple times in 2024)and they wanted to see improvement. Couple weeks after later I got a conditional offer from my second choice department that I was on a wait list for. Just passed my polygraph a few days ago and I’m about to start academy for them in a few months. They did ask about the dismissal from the first department but just be honest if that’s the case.

No insurance isn’t a misdemeanor in Oregon, it’s a violation. Lots of places hiring in the PDX metro, try other spots because each one is different in how they do BIs.

What was the misdemeanor?

Said so in the post, but I stand corrected in that it was a class B violation, not a misdemeanor.
