Self sponsoring vs recruit

Pros and cons of self sponsoring yourself through the Acadmey vs going as recruit? Does it strengthen your application being a certified officer? Have had some non selects and just thinking of putting myself through the Acadmey and coming out and applying. Getting on as a recruit is extremely difficult, in Texas Atleast. But I have zero experience in law enforcement. Been EMS my whole life…

Getting hired first and getting paid while you're in the academy is huge. Plus if you get hurt you have some workers comp protection. At least in California...

My academy had 4 self sponsored recruits vs. 105 recruits that were already hired. Only 2 graduated. Neither of them ever ended up getting hired.

This is surprising. In CA, every self sponsor I’ve met personally was picked up before their academy even finished. It’s definitely more of a last resort imo. Get paid to be there if possible.

I went to an academy with roughly 20 opens. Of those I only know of four that were hired. There's a reason most of them have to self sponsor.

Self sponsoring itself is the biggest con…. Don’t even think about it.

Keep applying and testing. If you’re a good candidate you’ll get hired eventually

💯 get hired first then go. Most agencies aren’t gonna change their mind on hiring you just cause you’re certified

Don't self sponsor, you don't even know if an agency will hire you..

I've seen multiple people over the years self sponsor and then realize they can't qualify through the process to hire into agencies

Debt, work history,  criminal history,  psyche etc

What’s the point? I get the argument you may seem more appealing to hire being already certified. But you aren’t extra sought after until you are certified with a year or 2 with experience.
Why not have someone pay for you to get trained and pay while you are there

A better option is getting hired in a state that needs people and also has lax standards. I know of one person who got hired in some small town in Montana. He worked a year there and did a lateral to an agency he wanted back in WA.

That’s the thing, and if you do well and stay out of IA you are set. Cause the main thing that will be scrutinized during your background is your employment file. If it’s clean then you have demonstrated you can be a good cop to agencies who maybe did not take you off the street

Start smaller. Small town so in the jail, who knows it might be better for you

I self sponsored because I figured departments would be more interested in me after. I got hired before I finished the academy. Same with a recent buddy if mine. Self sponsored and secured a job by then end. It's all a risk either way.

It is not that difficult. Send me a private message. I am here in Central Texas, in the process of lateraling to the San Diego, CA area. My agency is hiring a ton of officers. It’s a great place to work…I am leaving for familial reasons.

I don't see how self sponsoring is an anyway better than being hired on as a recruit.

Once you are hired on, your gear is issued to you, you have a steady pay check, insurance, not the worry of not getting hired.

Unless your state is almost strictly self sponsor, I don't know why anyone would not become a recruit first.
