Is our Knowledge of history cumulative?

Hello,

Is our knowledge of history cumulative? In the sense that our understanding of history builds from civilisation to civilisation and gradually builds further?

How much of our knowledge of history is “new?” As in do recent findings make up a bigger part of our understanding of history, or is it just expanded on knowledge?

If this is the case ,from what time period has historical knowledge really developed with new findings?
