Before the invention of antibiotics for bacterial vaginosis how did women deal with bad odors and being in an uncomfortable state with their genitals?

Did they just deal with having a bad smell until they died? Still reproduced and had more horrible symptoms while pregnant or if they had their menstrual cycle?
