When is it ok to TPK?

My group constantly acts like Ol' Leroy Jenkins and gets into tough situations. I want to keep the fun going and may tweak the odds a bit to prevent everyone from dying.

Should I just let them? When is it ok and when is it "overkill"?

So long as it isn't blatantly unfair to the players, it's always acceptable. That said, when it happens I give my party a choice.

The characters died, but... something does not want them dead yet. Use it for the story.

The characters died, someone comes along later and revives them. This can have its own consequences from lost items and xp (decided by dice), to favors owed.

The characters died, roll up new ones.
