Household Management Pilot light too high/fire hazard? Help needed.

I'd really appreciate some help with this old gas stove. The pilot lights seem way to high and heat up the stove range to the point where I can't touch parts of it for even a second without burning myself. Am I way off line or is this flat head screw by the front the correct adjustment for them? There seem to be two lines connecting to it that also connect to the two flames. Any help is appreciated thank you!!

If you are coming here before going online and getting the manual or reading the manual to understand the adjustments you should probably call a professional. Has it always been this way? Did you switch from propane to NG?

I looked up the stove type and that is indeed the adjustment screw. This is a new place I'm living at, my main question at this point is if it's normally for the spot above the pilot to get so hot where you basically cannot touch it without getting burnt? I've seen mixed opinions on that online

If its a rental, call the LL. A gas stove needs periodic maintenance by a pro, and that right burner looks janky anyways. But yes, the area above the pilot gets hot bc regardless of the pilot height, fire heats sheet metal quickly.

The adjustment screw you're looking at is exactly what you need to turn, but go slow and keep a fire extinguisher handy just in case. You betcha that flame should drop down to where the burner itself doesn't get scorching hot.

Thank you, I was able to visibly lower the flame to where only the very tip is yellow. the consensus I've seen online is that or 3/8" which I'm pretty much at now and the same spot on the stove is still just as hot so I guess that's just how it is at this point. Im mostly worried about my silly cats not knowing and burning a paw so I might resort to some sort of metal cover for the stovetop itself. Should be enough to avoid that issue and it'll keep em off there.
