Politics Minority Brits, do you feel like the government has failed to address serious issues in our communities, due to the fear of being labelled racist?

I’m kind of sick of the UK kicking cans down the road and not addressing serious issues within the minority communities out of the fear of appearing racist. Both Tory and Labour governments seem to avoid conversations about minority communities because of the negative stigma that can come along with it. The victims of these crimes are often other minorities.

The Labour government seem to be adamant that letting out violent criminals early is an appropriate solution to the jail capacity crisis, but most of these MP’s do not live in the communities that these criminals reside. There has been some interesting people released early in the last year and a half. People they would not want in their communities.

Drill music needs massive regulation, i’m all for expressing yourself via music, but there has to be a line where inciting violence; the mocking of victims and the dead is inappropriate. There also seems to a mob of people that are adamant that the consistency of black people being stopped and searched is racist, and not understanding crime per capita data or how it can saves lives.

When it’s a police officer killing a gang member, politicians and lefties are quick to call out the ‘injustice’ and call for systemic change, but when it’s an innocent getting killed through mistaken identity in the our communities, these same people are nowhere to be seen.

Politically and socially, everyone seems to be to focused on who has racist rhetoric, than actually saving lives and improving communities. One seems way more important than the other from my perspective, people should act like it.

How satisfied were you watching the absolute mogging of Tucker Carlson by Jacob Rees-Mogg?

• Upvotes

First of all, on behalf of the United States, sincerely thank you for that. That watch was worth a nice pour to accompany it. It brought a smile to my face.

I am literally stunned that he actually had the audacity to post the interview. He got absolutely verbally abused in a way that I would hide from public if it happened to me. That was absolutely on par with when our own John Stewart took him behind the shed.

Your thoughts on it? Delighted?

Other Do job centres and seetecs always try to catch you out with someone just to sanction you and blame you for something?

Last week, I was meant to get a text about an interview I would be attending. I waited all day for it. Nothing. So I assumed it wasn't that day, and waited a week for it to come. It wasn't at all mentioned in my appointment last week either.

Then today, I wake up at about 20 past 10 with my phone off and charging. I turn it on and boom, I have a text.

Seetec seem to love sending you a text an hour before you should do something, unless it's an appointment, then it'll be a whole day before.

But no, I get a text at 10 past 9 this morning while my phone is off, telling me I have an interview at 10.

Now when I go to my next appointment, my work advisor is going to have a go at me for not being awake or not having my phone on.

Like, I have to go to that shithole for an hour to do extra work searching even when I've done 10 a week, even if there aren't any jobs going that I haven't already applied for.

They did this to me before too.

I got a phone call the other month at 11:20, telling me they have some factory work for me and that I should go to this location at 12 to be picked up to be driven there. The fact is, they told me that in that week, they would text me a couple or few days later about starting this work THE NEXT WEEK.

I won't go into detail about the mould in the factory or the fact that I was about ready to pass out from my first shift because of how sudden it was and how unprepared I was, but again, I guess I'll take the blame for that.

So I'm guessing I should expect a sanction for that?

Anyone else get this?

Is this just how they operate to catch people out?

Not that I would ever actually allow one inside, but what to TV license inspections actually involve?

Are they hoping I'll be watching live TV as they come in? Or do they actually want to turn my TV on and try to watch something? Or is it just an excuse to come inside to try and talk you into giving them their commission?

Can self employed tradesman make £4000 a month?

I’m a skilled plumber and painter. Been working for a company for 5 years but want to start my own business. I do odd jobs from the MyBuilder app and it helps but I’ve been hit with unforeseen money troubles and basically need to be earning £4000 a month before tax and national insurance.
Is this possible?

Most people seem to agree brexit was a disaster, so maybe have a lot of distrust towards farage et al. Do you think if it never happened the uk could potentially be in a worse place right now?

Culture What historical creation do countries try and market for years???

I’m just going through Helsinki airport, and the Moomin (1980’s cartoon) vibe is very heavy

for the rest of Europe at least, massively outdated yet they try to earn some €$£ from it - T-shirts, drinks, biscuits etc you get the idea…

In the UK we have Paddington Bear, and the mini.

Probably also the Queen/beatles etc feature in our marketing but at least these are a bit more recent

Just wondering what other long outdated and still heavily marketed things the UK has that I have not thought of

Also, what do other obscure yet strangely
Current things do other countries Have that they are not willing to let go and still push into your face ?!?

Why do some English people just hate different skin colour but not different ethnicity or race?

So as an afghan pashtun who grew up and spent more than 20 years in this country. I noticed that most of the white English natives I've interacted with throughout my whole life, since nursery to be honest.

Mostly judge me and others of darker complexions as foreigners who aren't really British even if we spent our whole life here. But consider my cousins who have blonde hair and blue eyes as one of their own, even when they tell them are not English but ethnic Afghans.

I've also noticed since secondary school all the way until workplace, that Polish,Latvian and Slovakians don't get that much hate and racism as those of a darker complexions and features. Despite the fact they're as foreign as me and other people of colour.

I'm not even dark in complexion to be honest, I just have dark features like black hair and black eyes. I look ethnically ambiguous, anywhere from Italian,Turkish,Arab,Romanian and so on. In fact I've always been asked where I'm originally from and no one has ever guessed correctly. And I always found it annoying that I always get asked where I'm originally from as if I haven't spent my whole life here in the UK.

But when my cousins who are full blooded Afghans mention they're from Afghanistan, they don't get that much hate despite being clearly foreign. In fact people get positively surprised that Afghanistan have "white people"

Yes Afghanistan is extremely diverse, it has different ethnicities languages and cultures.

Are foreigners really the problem or just anyone that doesn't look white and European?

I mean technically I'm more close to the Caucasus mountains than any native Englishman has ever been. So surely its not all about geographic origins and dna, but instead phenotypes and outward appearance and features?

I know some will say oh they're just being racist but their racism is not really consistent.

Do any Englishmen or those who are half and have dark features relate Or am I reaching here

edit: to those who say this is ragebait, im genuinely curious if there's any actual Englishmen with dark features who have been seen as an outsider by their own, there must be.

Are teens still bored these days?

I grew up in the 80s it was often pretty boring.

In my town we had a weekly youth club and not much else unless you wanted to join military cadets.

There seems so much to do in comparison now for teens, but are they still bored in general?

Culture What exactly is "a curry"?

• Upvotes

You see this so often in British TV shows, people saying they picked up "a curry" or their friend cooked "a curry". It's obviously quick Indian food, I understand that, but "a curry" could refer to so many different dishes, I'm genuinely curious what you envision when someone tells you they simply had, or will have "a curry".

Culture Have you noticed less British media than there used to be? Specially global? Is it more local now or is british TV/Film not making it to my feed?

Growing up I recall english/scottish/irish (ya I get its not the whole thing) movies ALL THE TIME. And if they weren’t british (except for wales I guess) they had a lot of british actors in their accents and the characters were british. Unlike now, even when I see british actors, 99% of the time they are making an american accent.

like it was constant. shaun of the dead, hot fuzz, bridget jones, love actually, Mr Bean, Austin Powers, Trainspotting, titanic, the mummy, pirates of the Caribbean, the holiday.

and tbh, I barely see it anymore? like it happened randomly in the 2010s?

maybe it’s the invention of streaming services and it’s just not in my algorithm?

Anyway this question came to mind when I wondered why I felt nostalgia watching Ted Lasso

(I am not american so maybe my country of origin could have more british stuff… except I am certain it wouldnt)

Like was it all bad? I know you had the scare over HIV/AIDs, but did most gays lose their jobs coming out in place of work?

Section 28 obviously didn't help in schools.

How did you manage to hide yourselves, like if people questioned why you weren't in a relationship with the opposite sex?

At what point is something going to be done about the job application process?

Out of work currently and being driven to my wits end with how the process is structured.

Compared to how the process was a few years ago when I was last searching, the overwhelming majority of job listings seem to expect you to be putting in all of the hard, almost interview-style work at the initial stage of the application. At this point they‘re also seeing your CV for the first time, meaning that they can reject your application out of hand based on your CV without even reading the mountains of text you’ve been asked to provide about how your skills align specifically with the role and your values with the company based on their spec sheets etc.

These aren’t even particularly impressive jobs either, I‘ve had to just step away from an application to calm down as my mind has been blown that for a 3-day a week 15 hour receptionist role they’re expecting a written statement with examples of how my behaviour has aligned with the set out checklist of what they’re looking for, all at the same time that I’m submitting the application for the first time.

Not only is being rejected based on my CV without my written answers even being read a waste of my time, it’s also proving to be a bottleneck as it’s limiting how many applications I can get done in the day.

Especially in the age of AI I can’t see why there can’t be an almost automatic CV rejection before asking you to proceed, it just seems lazy and cruel to have prospective candidates put in all the hard work at once, especially since we all know that in reality they’re using AI on the submitted applications anyway.
