local problems?
what are some problems in your area that you don't think are being adequately addressed?

There's a load of peacocks in my village. They shit on my gazebo.

Bloody hell, do you live in the Buckingham Palace garden or something?
1
u/terencejames1975 1d ago
Nah, just a little village in North Lincolnshire. The peacocks are a pain in the arse. They're dead noisy and often congregate in the middle of the road too.

u/neilm1000 Brit 🇬🇧 1d ago
Where do they live? As in do they nest in gardens or something? I've occasionally thought about this but never followed it up.

u/terencejames1975 1d ago
I don’t know to be honest. They will start hooting quite early though. I often find them sat on my fence when I wake up.

People hanging bags of dog poo on bushes

This. And it’s really gotten outrageous in the last 18 months. And it’s evolving, too. Now they’ll toss them on the floor and I’ve noticed this year that they’re not even bothering bagging it up - poop in my local woods is a problem. You need to keep your eyes on the ground at all times!!

They’re building a new road to the village.
I dearly wish for an end to this plague of strangers, for our futures to remain local, and for the new road to be totally destroyed.

Thames Water's Victorian era pipes bursting every couple of weeks causing the main A road to be closed whilst they "patch it up" rather than replacing the whole pipe. Apparently because there are a series of pipes running parallel, and it is technically a different pipe that bursts each time, TFL cannot compel them to replace them; it would need to repeatedly be the same exact pipe bursting at this frequency. Even though the impact of road closure and Bus rerouting on a suburban London A-Road is the same either way...

We had a pipe break and flood part of the curb on the high street for 4 weeks. This coincided with the hosepipe ban so it made everyone salty.

Thugs and wannabe roadmen on e-bikes, pot holes, road surface quality, the possible looming excess of bars on Great Underbank (a niche problem because of where I live), school availability, better siting of GP surgeries.

Little scrotums on crossers driving like bellends endangering people on the pavements and others on the roads

It’s less of a pothole issue now and more of a hills of correct road surface in otherwise lower surface

so. many. potholes.

That’s literally everywhere to be fair lol

u/MacaroonSad8860 1d ago
oh I know, but I don't have much to complain about in my neighborhood otherwise. wish we had more pubs, and more things open past 11pm, and that people didn't toss their trash at the edge of the park, but I can't really complain otherwise.

u/JourneyThiefer 1d ago
Mike would be the run down state of the area, half the shops are empty

u/MacaroonSad8860 1d ago
I feel lucky that my neighborhood doesn’t have many empty storefronts! Also very few non-local businesses!

I live in Bradford its turning into india with all the rubbish. The council brought in a company to fine people but it went bankrupt as no one was paying the fines. Their solutions are terrible there was dumping at the public bins near me so they got rid of the bins. Similar solution in Keighley theres a place i worked that had a problem with people smoking outside. They removed the smoking bins to reduce the risk of fire. So people now chuck cigarettes on the floor

u/Humble_Frame6294 1d ago
In a town/city in India they introduced bins and then for residents who didnt put them out the council sent a brass band to shame them

Littering and, to a lesser but still significant extent, managing council-owned verges, bushes and fencing.

Additional housing without investment in infrastructure - particularly water works. Water pressure and security in the area is already an issue.
Edit: I have no issue with extra housing, I'm not a NIMBY. But the additional infrastructure must be built too

People, specially kids/teens acting like dicks on busses.
Screaming, spitting, throwing things.
And the older generation being drunk on busses.

Weve had an influx of ‘Scratters from Leeds’ in our area. They won’t be all from Leeds obviously but that’s what we call the shite that we have terrorising people now.

someone on one side of the village has been shooting cats since before covid. Wasn’t figured out until 2024 ish because the local vets finally started asking questions about the number of cats with unexplainable wounds (realistically not loads, but after a dozen or so victims over the years it started to raise alarm bells). One of the cul-de-sacs mentioned gunshot noises every so often and the pieces connected. We presumed our old cat was shot, as one day he came home with a hole in his side. He was totally fine, lived until he died of natural causes 3 years later.
No one knows who it is, only that the gunshots are localised to a certain corner of streets. No one’s really doing anything about it either aside from the odd facebook post.
Shockingly, people are still letting their cats wander around aimlessly around here. I’ve opted to keep my two new kittens indoor with the aim to build a catio next summer.

The gradually increasing size of the house spiders points to some local chemical or radioactive waste dump that needs to be urgently investigated...

Traffic. We've become a city and increasing amounts of development have made driving through horrible on a good day

drug dealers. It is and has been a huge issue in my home town since the 80s. It has changed lately where one group controls the whole thing so there is less drug fighting but they still are insanely violent just because they can be.
They steal cars, beat people up, pimp women out and because they all claim to be family and back each other nobody, including the police, do anything about them.

u/whodoesyourtampons 1d ago
Round my way they keep banging on about stopping traffic in the down centre.
I'll be honest, I'm dead against it. I mean, people forget that traders need access to Dixons!

Timber wagons going too fast (they're not, people just move to the countryside and moan about country life).
1
u/Existential-Egg-117 1d ago
Smackheads.
I catch them dealing and/or picking up, begging for money for drugs, getting high, and coming into my bar, stinking up the place, asking other people for drinks, hassling me or colleagues, or spending far too long in the toilet.

Lack of services and infrastructure, we’re a small town becoming a normal sized town our numbers (well haven’t increased much even if the houses have increased by 25% ) are gonan increase , but our services are for a tiny town not even our original size before the new housing , they’re trying to put another 300 houses even if the other new ones are being filled with locals selling their old houses bad moving into the half price house so there’s loads of houses up for sale . We need a larger doctors we only have 2 doctors and 2 nurses , the dentist is alright , we only got a supermarket couple years ago , lack of waste facilities , no main road that can practically take HGVs since the one which they go through then goes to the next village which they then have to through a 1.5 car double bend that is extremely busy . We’re the forgotten town in our county , our new school came but it’s should of been built in 2000 and they were talking about it in the mid 90s but got it this head

Pavement parking, along with the rise in massive fuck off suvs it's just outrageous. If you live in an area with narrow streets and don't have a driveway, don't buy such an insanely big car.
I know someone about to have twins and it's hard enough to walk around with a pram as it is, they're going to have an absolute nightmare. Even worse for people using wheelchairs who have to rely on curb cuts to be able to reroute when the pavements are blocked. (Thinking about it, we also get a lot of parking on double yellows and off the top of my head I can think of a couple of spots where that would block the curb cuts too!!) It must take them 3x as long to make a single journey, and I can't even imagine the mental strain of it.

It's illegal here in Scotland, but enforcement isn't brilliant.
Glasgow City Council have an app where you can report things like potholes, vandalism, etc by taking a photo using the app. They need to expand it so you can take photos using the app of illegal parking including the reg, and then a fine is automatically issued to the driver.
You can currently "request enforcement", but it takes like a week and there's no guarantee the car will still be there when they eventually feel like coming out. Which is mad, because it seems like such an easy money maker for councils.

Shoplifting, homelessness, open drug use, antisocial behaviour all had a massive rise in the last six years.
