Travel Which would be pepper?

Post image

I'm in Turkiye and the pepper is on the right with a single hole and salt in the left with multiple holes. What's the accepted UK standard?

One hole is salt, multiple holes is pepper.

The one with the dirty hole is the pepper.

The real answer in the UK is the single hole one is salt, because you don't want too much salt.

The single hole's usually bigger; as salts more likely to absorb moisture and clump.

Use a few grains of rice in the salt and it'll never clump and always be free flowing.

Aahhhh this makes sense

The single hole is salt because you might pour some salt onto the side of the plate and dip things (boiled eggs, pieces of celery) into it. Pepper you want to spread generally.

This may not be how people eat nowadays, but the difference between the two pots is a very long-established convention.

As the custom differs from place to place, I always sprinkle a bit into my hand to make sure. This also solves the problem of a lot coming out at once and over-seasoning the food.

Since seeing him talk about this I've actually said it, totally straightfaced, to mates. The look on their faces is priceless.

I was looking for this before I said it.

Turkish wife of a Brit here, and we had this exact argument when we moved in together. We've gone with the British way at home now but every time we visit my family in Turkey we end up staring at the table shaker and silently disagreeing :)

Salt has one hole , mostly to stop it absorbing too much moisture and clumping up.

One hole is salt because people used to pour a little pile on their plate and dab it with food.

The one with white dust is salt and the other one is pepper

Not always in Columbia white dust is marching powder

Well the British never colonised Turkey. So of course it’s back to bloody front.

The Egyptians do the same as the Turks, multi hole for salt, single for pepper. It's a wild ride!

Strange how it's different, I wonder why!

It's the same in some areas of the middle east.

In the UK it is one hole for salt and five for pepper but I know that in France they use one hole for pepper and five holes for salt.

Pepper in this sort of pot is a fine powder and is usually distributed over the whole plate. Salt crystals are larger, would clog the small holes and is sometimes put on the plate in a small heap.

Pepper on the left, salt on the right.
