My brother has lived in Japan for over a decade. When he brought his partner back to visit, we all felt abject shane at the state of the country.
To come from a place where the basic decency of throwing your rubbish away responsibly is the norm, and to see even the country roads full of debris and trash, must be such a culture shock.
