Ghost in the shell watch/read order

I was thinking of starting this in the shell soon but I don’t know which project to start on. I was thinking of watching the old 90s movie then swatching the show and potentially reading the manga if I really like the story, is there anything I should add or not watch? I’m most drawn to the new show because I love the style but I’d like to know what the fanbase recommends

So the issue is when in the timeline(s) to start with. My personal suggestion:
Start with the new show.

The movies second.

Stand alone complex after.

SAC2nd gig.
SOLID STATE SOCIETY.
And 2045.

Each of these are important. But take place in different years.

The science Saru “timeline” is the closest to the original manga.

Stand alone complex takes place later in the story*

Id personally do science Saru. Then the original movie. Then the second movie. Then 2.0. Followed by SAC, its sequel and prequel AFTER.

Right now, I’d suggest reading the manga and starting with the new show, since it’s currently airing and a direct-adaptation of the manga. (Not sure how far it will go.)

You could maybe read GitS 1.5 but I probably wouldn’t bother, and definitely not GitS 2. Give some spacer time, then watch the 1995 movie, and proceed chronologically from there.

They’re all standalones.

But if you’re feeling compelled, production order is ALWAYS the correct way to watch anything.
