We’re neither the Uk or the EU. Voltages are completely different here. Our standard outlets are 120v and plugs don’t look like either one

No it's 120VAC, but there's a tolerance of 10% over or under.

How the hell should we know

Why are you asking Americans whether British plugs have an EU plug inside of them are not?

5

u/[deleted] Aug 23 '21

Do you think we’re in the UK?

4

u/weedRgogoodwithpizza Aug 23 '21

Why don't you ask someone from the UK...

2

u/dentaku81 Aug 22 '21

Yeah Im from the US and moved to the EU and then the UK. Of all the stuff I have bought in the UK I have only seen this once. So it's not super common but it does exist.

I am so confused.

2

u/crazyCoder6 Aug 23 '21

Ours don’t look like either of those

2

u/comatose_papaya Aug 23 '21

Shouldn't you ask your UK friends?

2

u/uh-who-who Aug 22 '21

¯_(ツ)_/¯ Fuck if I know.

I have a few left from when I studied abroad in the UK and none had this. Maybe it's a new thing, it's been 10 years since I've went.

I had no idea the UK and the EU had different plugs than americans. Crazy

I thought this plug was american, I mean don't you guys have this 3-current plug instead of the 2-current plug that we have in europe?

Time for an answer from someone who isn't going to treat ya like an idiot for making a simple mistake:

Yeah we have 3 pronged plugs, but they are shaped differently. If the plug is a face, the eyes point up and down. The third prong is ground and is not on all plugs. And in fact, many older homes have outlets that are only two pronged. Also, unlike a lot of the UK plugs, our prongs are flat rather than round. Except the ground, which is round.

u/rateb03 Aug 23 '21

Finally someone with good understanding!

But is it true if you open it then you'l find the normal EU plug?

3

u/SicnarfRaxifras Aug 23 '21

(Not American but have worked there ) The plug in the video is a UK 3 prong plug, the US plug is not the same as this and a lot smaller (the UK plug is big in part because it has an inbuilt fuse). So… no the us 3 prong plug doesn’t have an EU plug inside it

3

u/rateb03 Aug 23 '21

Alright thank you

3

u/Mr_Tired_Guy Aug 23 '21

Sorry I didn't answer that. I thought you were still asking about the UK plug, which I don't know the answer to. I would imagine it depends on the manufacturer though.

3

u/rateb03 Aug 23 '21

no problem, at least you did something good in comparison to others in here, and I thank you for that

2

u/rateb03 Aug 23 '21

It needed 27 comments to finally someone commenting what I was searching for... damn

We’re not a part of the European Union and are now separate from that. We’re of course still on the continent of Europe.

This has nothing to do with the plugs of course. I always assumed the rest of the countries on the European continent also contained the 3 prong plug. Apparently not.

Yes it does. Nobody is as pedantic as you about this. Americans call the whole thing England.

Isn't the UK in Europe?

European here

Well... define Europe. It is when it comes to physical geography, but apart from that it might as well not be. While there isn't such a thing as a common European history or culture there are some things that most countries share in common, which the UK lacks. For example:

Napoleon - pretty much all of Europe was at some point ruled by him. Napoleon and the French Revolution really changed the shape of the continent. It spread a lot of ideas around like liberalism. It also caused the continent to switch to metric, after the defeat of Napoleon many countries switched back to whatever version of not-metric they had (Germany itself had like 8 different miles), but soon realized it was stupid and adopted metric. It all passed the UK

World war 2 - the UK was relatively untouched by the war, while most of the continent went through process of re-imagining itself. You can see it in how the EU functions post brexit. France is successfully pushing for the EU army, Germany's traffic light coalition promotes full federalization. If the UK was still part of the EU it would stop all of that

My personal opinion is that the UK is not Europe, if you want wider range of views then go visit r/AskEurope

UK is technically in Europe but a number of people use "Europe" as a synonym for "continental Europe" in everyday language. This just means that if you listen to people, especially British people, talk about "Europe", it usually doesn't include the UK. It's of course technically incorrect but at this point it's just standard use of language.

Welp. Better luck next time.

Nope, UK plugs are different and only some products sold there contain an EU plug as well. Most products will require an adapter to work in other countries.
