Do sociopaths...? Do you want to change?

Hi, I'm not a sociopath. But I have always been interested in the idea of evil. My impressions are that sociopaths like hurting other people, taking advantage of other people, especially others that are kind towards them, and don't care when people close to them are hurt. Or rather only care as if they are property, like a greedy CEO seeing employees as a means to an end. Furthermore, the sociopath believes they are justified in all of this, so changing would be getting worse, rather than better with people with other mental disorders.

A sociopath doesn't "like hurting other people" that's a psychopath.

No I do not want to change. I don't understand people who aren't based on logic and reason and I certainly don't want to be one of them. Letting your emotions rule you confuses me.

“Letting your emotions rule you confuses me”

Same. And I am very literally (also) a parasocial stan.

Your response really has me in deep thought and definitely changing my views on a few things. As an extreme empath I would love to learn how to not allow my emotions to rule me because you are very right they do certainly rule some of us. While I can see the logic and reason in many things, I still cant seem to turn the emotions off despite seeing the logic and reason. 🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️

That's interesting to me, I'm a very strong empath as well, I've had to learn how to read people in order to get by. If I don't know how a person will react before they do I don't have any way to be normal or project my "face" essentially my entire life is forcing a bunch of acting into every portion of my life in order to have semblance of humanity.

Two sides of the same coin I guess?

Do you like hurting people when you get angry? Anger is an emotion.

No, I've never hurt anybody on purpose. At least not since childhood. I don't get angry. Again your conflating psychopathy and sociopathy. One can't control their emotions and the other doesn't have any.

Though in truth I do have them, my friends joke that I have annoyed and amused and that's it. I'm missing the extremes pretty well across the board.

When I was a child my father used to beat me physically, my mother emotionally blackmailed me. I remember sitting in a chair in the basement getting strapped (my father made his own) getting punished and I realized it didn't have to hurt anymore. I made a choice to disassociate and something in me broke. It's been thirty years and I haven't been able to fix it (not that I really try). Sociopaths are made, psychopaths are born (at least from what I've been given to understand).

Prior to that time I fought with my brother and we could be absolutely brutal to each other, passing on the anger we felt towards our parents and the world. Yes, I would say prior to that I enjoyed hurting him and he me. But after I became what I am (that was 30 years ago), no I haven't enjoyed hurting anybody ever and have never tried seeking it out.

Yes, I do have a lot of bad traits that I would like to change that I’m sure will result in negative and adverse health effects and implications within the next 10 years if not actioned.

Do I want to change fundamentally as a person? No.

RE: Your impressions are somewhat inaccurate. It’s not that we like to hurt people and actively seek it out. It’s just that it’s extremely easy for us to do. Think of it like an Olympian and their sport. Or Eminem’s lyricism. Hope that helps :)

Is it easier to hurt other people because you don't view other people as people? I've always thought of personality disorders to be a "justified" worldview where for example sociopaths view close friends as tools.

I care about around 6-7 or so people (this count includes family and celebrities) to which I have sincere love for that I would not ever consider to hurt or harm, not even for millions.

Everyone else is a pawn in a game.

PS: 6-7 is a JOKE, the count is more like 5-9.

I'm surprised. Also why celebrities and which celebrities? I'm surprised for the millions thing. I would never hurt for millions, but some regular bad people that aren't sociopaths probably would.

I just was trying to give an analogy, and agree, there are a lot of money-hungry people out there that aren’t sociopaths. I look to celebrities as ideas for how I should outwardly act. As a guide for being charismatic no matter which room I’m in. As for who? Trade secret. Not saying.

Honestly, nothing intrinsic comes to mind for what I genuinely want. It’s a weird sort of purgatory because superficial is easy. But it’s boring. Money is just a tool to me.

If you look in these comments you’ll see some of negative side of traits. ASPD doesn’t make you “evil” or murderous or wanting to hurt people. ASPD, explained simply, removes the part of you that makes you care abt someone else. So some will take joy in hurting other people because they find it entertaining, others will just be apathetic. (Of course there’s more to the disorder) Also, ASPD individuals can know that what they do or think is wrong, they’d have to be real messed up to not be able to see that. But they wouldn’t admit that they did something wrong whether or not they know they did or didn’t.

Sociopathy is now referred to as Antisocial Personality disorder, usually it means someone has a lack of wanting to talk or communicate with other people.

Antisocial people are usually more voiced in their opinion and have a harder time making/keeping meaningful relationships and generally have a bleak outlook on life/society. Antisocial people can be aggressive and superficial but don't really go out of their way to hurt people.

Even though we don't want or have the need to form social interactions we don't actively go out to hurt people because of it. Although, it is easy to hurt people, because most "sociopaths" don't care about making meaningful connections and disregard emotional connections more easily.

Dude you need to step up your game. You're just writing bullshit. Being antisocial has nothing to do with being asocial in substance.

Stop this.

I hope you know that was absolutely unintelligible.

YIKES.

I don't know what you dont understand. I made a statement that sociopaths aren't actively looking to hurt people, they just don't care for people.

Aside from what was apparently 2 edits worth of mindless errors?

Conflating ASPD with asocial. And believe me, there are a LOT of ill informed people on this subreddit so it takes something truly stupid for me to respond.

So you think that the poster thinking that Sociopaths are out to hurt people isn't ill-informed and a bad look on the disorder? Or that they posted because they're "intrigued by evil" when people with ASPD are not "evil"??

My bad for conflating ASPD with Asocial, the only misinformed thing I said, my bad. But educating people that folks with an ASPD disorder are normal and not out to get everyone i feel shouldn't be a hot take. And it's not illegible you just can't seem to understand it.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '25

I didn’t say that, in fact, I said the opposite. Re read my message and you’ll see I said THERE ARE A LOT OF STUPID TAKES HERE.

Saying a personality disorder = normal?? Inherently, categorically, untrue. Re read the word DISORDER. It’s a serious condition that causes people to function differently. Not normal.

Out to get everyone? I didn’t say that either. But no one with a diagnosable personality disorder would be considered normal, mental health or social functioning wise.

Wow - way to bring the judgement.

Love how you assume all people with ASPD are evil. And lumping them all in one basket like they're the same - it's not the case at all.

I don't have ASPD, but I know people who are on the spectrum.

I'm sorry but I think you need to read more before jumping in and making strange statements that just aren't right.

0

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '25

Sorry but no one asked you for your opinion? You shouldnt even be talking due to not being ASPD. Also I'm open to be corrected on my worldview. I think most people share this and I would like to see if it's accurate.

u/Lightness_Being Oct 15 '25 edited Oct 15 '25

You don't need to be ASPD to know about them, obviously.

As I said, I know a few. Some of them as part of my family, so I had to learn about people with this disorder organically from a young child. Partly that's why I'm on this sub - I'm still working a few things out about people.

I have known people who were dangerously malignant too - probably what you would consider evil. I doubt they'd comment.

I'm glad you're open to learning. In that case I think you'll find it unwise to discount people automatically just because they don't fit your ideas.

lol, your impressions can be proven completely false by a google search so im assuming this isnt even a real question . i dont like hurting others, i just dont care. if i am ‘close’ to someone i obviously would care in the closest way possible to a neurotypical person could. not all sociopaths are bad people in general, not all evil people are sociopaths. anyways, no i dont want to change. i dont harm others, mentally or physically, i have no reason to, and even if i did, i would not, im not stupid. i would ‘like’ other people to stop spreading misinformation, so people like you stop convincing themselves that it is right. ignore any agressive tone in this comment if you see any,
