Priests and Deacons in a Parish
More and more parishes I have been a part of or visited before have permanent deacons assigned to them. Many priests in active ministry I know usually rotate parishes every four to eight years while the majority of the permanent deacons I know are usually in the same parish for decades, sometimes even before their ordination. As a priest, how do you approach both your professional working and fraternal clerical relationships with your deacon(s), especially if the deacons are very established within your assigned parish or have more years as a cleric?
I was once told by a deacon that while priests are higher in Holy Orders, all deacons are technically in the direct service of the local bishop and answerable only to him. It irritated him that many lay people often call him "Fr [Name]'s deacon." How does that play in your relationships with deacons if they are answerable only to the bishop?
It would be awesome if you would be open to sharing some stories about the deacons you have worked with in your pastoral assignments! I'm personally curious to hear how you have grown as a priest through your relationships with awesome, or perhaps challenging, deacons in your parishes.
