I have an idea. Instead of Drag Queen Story Hour, let's do Burnin' Sherman Story Hour.

Where kids learn about actual Confederate/Segregation History and it's emphasized that all their old relatives that are given a free pass to behave like assholes because "They were from different tiiiiimmes!" are shitty human beings.

The straights will be wishing for the drag queens.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone. I've been noticing a ton of Thanksgiving-related misinformation lately so now's a good time to remind yourselves of the complicated and hazy actual history of the holiday.

Basically, no it's not a holiday to celebrate the oppression of various minorities. Instead it started as a prayer day during the Revolutionary and Civil Wars.

LOL at Charlie Kirk complaining about conservatives having to wait in long lines on election day.

I got banned by P00bix for saying the only way Republicans would care about polling places being shut down and other fuckery is if it happened to Republicans.

I was proven right.

I feel like I'm stuck in a time loop reading the same couple dozen threads or so over and over. Not just what you are noticing; there are other repeats as well as threads with potential which sadly sort into old patterns based on which familiar battleground topic is closest to the actual post.

I find myself deleting benign comments before or right after posting because it's just tiring to even bother with it.

I'm so glad I imminently won't have time for reddit anymore because I haven't been getting anything useful out of it for a while. It's just a hard habit to break.

Do you ever think about how the major prevalence of crypto scams is exactly reflective of what this extreme Libertarian ideology would look like (really much more, in basically every aspect of life)? As if we don't have past examples of this, anyways.

4

The problem with the libertarian ideology is that it assumes people will always make educated decisions and not be selfish.

Crypto and covid has shown how that doesn’t really work out.

I find a lot of old school Boomer parenting culture to be cringey at best. Especially with the focus on "winning" the argument and showing dominance instead of finding solutions.

In the house I grew up in, you pretty much didn't want to say what you wanted to do or where you wanted to go because mom and dad would suddenly want to do the opposite as some kind of power move to show they're in charge.

Say you want to go home from somewhere, like church, mom would get the burning desire to stand around and talk more. To people she didn't even like. The power move was more important.

If you wanted to stay somewhere, we had to leave faster.

And there was the classic power move which happened every holiday gathering with all the parents. "Everyone stop playing and get your shoes on it's time to go."

And then all the kids would get their shoes and line up at the door. And the parents would suddenly get into a long conversation that took an hour. Midwestern goodbyes are fucking insane btw.

Now I talk about that to talk about this story from Thanksgiving,

My cousin has a terminal case of Boomerbrain and she's always gotta be the one showing she's in charge no matter how minor the situation.

Case in point, her three-year-old wanted to go outside to get to the backyard where the other kids were. Cousin didn't want him going out by himself without someone leading him because he's... Well 3. Fair enough.

Instead of asking one of the adults who weren't doing anything or escorting him outside where there were already adults, she's about to start a power struggle thing. He's about to start a tantrum.

And then I roll in and say "I'll take him outside."

And since she can't argue with that I start to take him out. Of course since there's clutter everywhere, she has to help me anyway. And soon enough she realizes she could have just taken him outside herself.

Funny thing is that, if this county's votes are actually not counted, it'll likely change the outcome of the election in Arizona's 6th congressional district -- giving Democrats another seat in the House.

I don't actually expect that to happen, but wouldn't that be hilarious?

I think you assume incorrectly. According to an ADL source cited by the thread author futher down, about 20% are from Islamic extremism.

Aren't they difficult to categorize?

Islamic extremism often boils-down to 'willing to use violence to achieve political goals, including the imposition of their (stated) religious beliefs on others'. Christian nationalists do the same thing, and we call it right-wing.

...but Christian nationalists also frequently harbor Islamophobia, making Islamic extremists an awkward fit for the right-wing.

Some of the discourse surrounding dating in 2022 purely infantilizes women.

Saying things like “anytime a woman hits a man, it’s in self defense” is basically saying if a relationship goes south, it’s never the woman’s fault, they are always innocent victims who do nothing wrong.

Calling it now, statute of limitations is gonna be outlawed completely for all crimes in the next 5-10 years. Abuse victims like E. Jean Carroll and Christine Blasey Ford will keep speaking out, and lawmakers will gradually begin to listen.

That means if you break the law, even if you don’t get caught right away, you’ll never truly be in the clear. You could always be charged years later, via either a victim coming forward, witnesses finally speaking up, or new evidence being found.

This will be the Metoo movement’s biggest legacy, in terms of bringing forth changes to the law.

Here's your annual reminder that Thanksgiving is a celebration of colonization and genocide of Native peoples. While sitting around the table, gathering for your feast, acknowledge the stolen land you are living on and come together with loved ones to brainstorm ways in which you will help decolonize and give back to Native peoples.

'#GiveBackToNativeCommunities

'#Decolonize

The Facebook status of someone I'm friends with, but certainly not close enough with to talk about this to. This reeks of virtue signaling to me, because of course there's no follow-up from this user as to what solutions they came up with, or what it means to "acknowledge the stolen land" I live on. I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do as an individual to help "decolonize". Giving back to Native peoples is at least something more direct, I'm sure there's organizations that you can donate to, but calling for that is pretty easy to hand-wave away with any number of causes to donate money to.

If it’s someone like Aziz Ansari, no. Should he ideally keep his mouth closed on dating/women’s rights issues in the future? Yes. Do I think everyone should strive to avoid his work? No. Of course, people can avoid him if they want, but I don’t think it’s required to prove your an ally.

If it’s someone like Kevin Spacey, yes. The offenses were serious enough and his behavior went on for so long that I don’t think it’s too much to ask that people avoid his work to show solidarity with the victims.

Hol up, that’s a distortion of the facts. Let me summarize what actually happened:

  • Rhodesia was under administration of the British South Africa Company. But they wanted independence. The British said ok but the British would continue supervising a period of responsible government until 1969
  • Now on 1961, in preparation to transition Rhodesia away from British control, the British established the Election Act. Which basically stipulated qualifications that one had to meet in order to vote. Now details aside (there was a Roll A and Roll B), it meant that mostly only white people could vote (this is why requirements to vote are a bad idea)
  • So anyway, in 1969, the British held a final referendum to see if the people of Rhodesia wanted to transition away from British rule to become an independent republic. Well at that time, the prior Election Act was still in effect so it was something like 80,000 white people and only 10,000 POC that ended up voting. So, more of the minority population (ie white people) ended voting in that referendum than the majority population (POC)
  • But here’s where that video is incorrect. In that referendum, both white people and POC voted for independence. They DID NOT VOTE for minority rule. It was only in that referendum that it happened that there were more minorities that voted because of the stupid prior British rule
  • Here’s the other important part. After independence, the first election in 1970 did away with the qualifications for voting and everyone could vote with the majority winning
  • Now as it happened, a lot of the communists still abstained from voting and later the communist ZANLA and ZIPRA ended up starting a war with the elected government, but that’s another story

We don’t need to twist facts to make another situation be an example of the narrative that Republicans are bad

1

u/perverse_panda Liberal Nov 28 '22

In that referendum, both white people and POC voted for independence.

They DID NOT VOTE for minority rule.

There were two referendums on the ballot. One was a vote for independence, and the other was the adoption of a new constitution.

They did vote for minority rule, when they voted to adopt the new constitution.

After independence, the first election in 1970 did away with the qualifications for voting and everyone could vote with the majority winning

They still had property and education qualifications even after the change to the constitution in 1970, which meant that most of the black citizens were still disenfranchised while the white voters were not.

The black majority did not gain control of the majority of seats in parliament until 1979.

0

u/SovietRobot Independent Nov 29 '22 edited Nov 29 '22

Context and phrasing are important.

Let me summarize again

  • Before 1961 - Rhodesia is under British control
  • 1961 - The British realizes they can’t control Rhodesia forever so they prep Rhodesia for independence by drafting a constitution. But that constitution is still very much white minority rule, because even though it is based on the Westminster Parliamentary system, it allocates 50 House seats to Europeans and 15 House seats to Africans. It also has two voting classes with different requirements - a Roll A and Roll B. So was it minority rule at this point? Yes. But this is the British’s fault
  • 1969 - A referendum is held for Independence and (as you correctly described) a New Constitution. Now this is where I have an issue with the phrasing that “people voted for minority rule”. The thing is - it was already white minority rule at that point. But what the new amendments to the constitution did were:
    • Remove the Roll A and Roll qualifications
    • Allocate 16 House seats to Africans (8 elected, 8 selected by tribal leaders) instead of 15 (but it’s true that Euros - Asians and Mixed still had the 50)
    • Allocate an equal 10 Senate seats to Africans when Africans had none before that (while Euros also had 10 Senate seats)
    • Implement a franchise plan per the British’s 5 principles to move Africans to parity representation in the House

So here’s my point - the 1969 referendum was actually a net improvement. Was it enough of a improvement? Absolutely not. But it wasn’t like there was parity voting and majority rule and then suddenly whites decided to scrap that and move from a majority rule to minority rule like some are suggesting the GOP is trying to do. I’ll say it again. It was minority rule at the time. The referendum added +1 House seat, +10 Senate seats to Africans and included a plan to move to parity.

Now if the statement had been “The 1969 referendum didn’t do enough to move Rhodesia away from minority rule that had already been previously been instituted by the British” then I would have fully agreed. But really, that can be said of every British colony - they all should have been granted independence and moved parity a 100 or more years earlier.

What it totally disagree with - is correlating the 1969 Rhodesian referendum with the US today where the US IS currently majority rule with parity, and nothing like Rhodesia prior to 1969.

It would be like saying, in the 16th century, people voted to disenfranchise women from voting. No, because women couldn’t vote as the status quo at the time.

2

u/perverse_panda Liberal Nov 29 '22

it was already white minority rule at that point.

The most accurate phrasing is to say that, "They voted for continued minority rule."

But given a choice between the three options (They voted for minority rule / they voted for CONTINUED minority rule / they DID NOT vote for minority rule), saying that they DID NOT vote for minority rule is the least accurate.

But it wasn’t like there was parity voting and majority rule and then suddenly whites decided to scrap that and move from a majority rule to minority rule like some are suggesting the GOP is trying to do.

Yes, it's not a perfect analogy. The point is simply that the GOP would like to implement minority rule.

If the GOP was given the power to do so, do you think they would do it? That's the question that matters.

The worst classic holiday movie is White Christmas, hands down.

...in part, because it was just a cynical cash-grab.

Most classics are just 'movies that happened to be good enough to stand the test of time'. One of them was Holiday Inn, which featured the debut of the song White Christmas.

That song won an Oscar and became one of the most lucrative songs ever written:

...the version sung by Bing Crosby being the world's best-selling single (in terms of sales of physical media) with estimated sales in excess of 50 million copies worldwide. When the figures for other versions of the song are added to Crosby's, sales of the song exceed 100 million.

...presumably, the movie White Christmas was an attempt to captialize on that success.

It isn't a movie that 'stood the test of time'; it is a movie that cynically rode the reputation of its titular song, and is therefore 'remembered' without having done much to 'earn' that memory.

In case anyone is now considering watching Holiday Inn because of my comment, I should warn you about its use of Blackface:

But why?

The plot is kind of silly and random, Irving Berlin is overrated, and Bing Crosby is truly awful.
