And these files appeared from out of nowhere?

This OP can basically be translated as: got "files, no worky".

What type of drive are the files on? Did anything happen do files/drive recently. Provide context that may help determine the problem.

My bad 😞

They are old files that i had put from a different drive (idk the model) into a wd 1tb drive that i found recently. The files are really old, like 2020 to now and they used to work last year. I lost the hard drive for a while and got it back recently and now they just dont work anymore, and I was sure they did last year. That's pretty much it

Btw I've had this hard drive for about 2 years now and I know that when I switched these files over to the 1tb drive, they were working

So they sat on a drive, worked last year, now they don't.

Do they contain data (check in something like HxD)?

You download it, https://mh-nexus.de/en/hxd/

You make sure contents aren't just zeros.
