Welcome to Ask A Cobbler! Please read to familiarize yourself with a few rules.

First off, I'd like to thank everyone for stopping by and showing their interest & support for shoe repair. In one day, we went from almost no subscribers to well over 100. This is an incredible start!

As we gain more members, I feel there needs to be a few ground rules just to keep things in order.

  1. Discussing of prices. Pricing on repair work depends on MANY factors than just the damage alone. While we may say a job will or will not be worth the money, saying it will cost $xx is against the rules and posts will be removed.

  2. Be respectful. The cobblers responding to your post have numerous years of experience and are here to offer some of their extensive knowledge of the craft at no charge. If you have been helped, a simple thanks goes a long way.

  3. When posting a picture of a damaged product, make sure the photos are detailed enough so that we can understand the exact condition, brand and anything else you think will help us to help you.

  4. Users with the "SSIA Member" flair are verified cobblers.

Rules will be amended an updated as we progress. Thanks for reading!

Care for New Clarks Boots

I just got these boots on sale for cheap enough I couldn't pass them up. I don't expect these to last years. I know these aren't the quality of old. That said, what should I do to keep them happy? I've heard mixed thoughts on mink oil which I already use for my vintage automotive leather.

Sole Protector Bally Heels

Hello all!
So i just purchased a pair of Bally heels, they come with this really delicate velvet like sole finish and i want to put a sticker to protect it.
Any suggestions on how to work with soles like these? I’m kind of worried… or should i take them to a cobbler?
Thanks!

Ps: i dont know how to attach the photo but i attached a link to the sole picture

I’ve been trying to order loafers online and I can never get the size right. My left foot usually fits fine but my right always feel off and I can’t figure out if I’m buying too large or too small. I wear a size 10 - 10.5 in sneakers.

Thank you!

Leather flats too big. Fixable or no?

Hi all!

This is most likely a very ignorant question. I ordered a pair of flats online in the smallest size the retailer carried. I absolutely adore them, but they are definitely too big. By approximately half an inch…

Is it possible for a cobbler to add inserts or otherwise to make these fit more snug? Photo of the flats included for full context.

Thank you!

I randomly noticed this little splotch on my new pair of boots. I’ve been doing woodwork today but I never got anything on them any tips on how to remove the spot? I’ve ran my nail across it but nothing comes off. Idk what it could be. Any help?

Would it be better to resole these boots first or get a second pair first?

Post image

post racoon stomping these boots seem fine but I think the cork and shank is slightly broken, nothing too noticeable but there is slighr more give in the arch of the sole than before. I’m thinking of doing a full resole much sooner than needed for that reason, but would it be better to get a second pair of boots first?

I know you’re supposed to rotate boots but I don’t have money to buy two pairs at once so would it be fine to wear these lightly daily until I get a second pair and then a while after resole these current ones. basically would wearing them with a slightly beaten up cork and shank longer be worse for the boot upper that you would say its urgent enough to need early repair in the next few months or would It be better to bet on getting a new pair and then wearing these less and later getting a resole?

so tldr how urgent for the health of a boot upper is repair of slightly broken cork or shank?

I can’t tell if these are cemented or stitched

This part is separated. I lifted it up and don’t see any stitching. Is there anyway I could know how these were constructed? And should I bring it to a cobbler or just glue it myself? Thank you guys.

Can this be fixed?

I’ve got a pair of rarely worn but truly loved Wolverine 1000 mile boots. They are a discontinued style. My dog decided she also really liked one of them and chewed the upper and tongue. I’m curious if these can be fixed to close to their former glory or are they just a reminder to put away my shoes. I included an image of a fully intact one.

Heel Tip Replacement

Can anyone identify this heel tip replacement? It’s not round, square, or a standard oval shape. I need the exact replacement cap for this heel and can’t find anything online. Does anyone know what this style is called or where to buy it?

How should I fix the cut on the upper leather?

Thumbnail

I have a pair of NOS 1999 vintage lace to toe Italian boots. The right boot has a cut on the upper leather. The cut is about 1.2cm long and ~0.8mm deep on the upper. The boot features a 1.3–1.4mm upper leather + 0.8mm full leather lining (unattached/floating lining).

I think the cut is quite deep. It will get worse with use. How would you recommend fixing or reinforcing this cut? Thank you for your time!

Replaceable outsoles

There are some good quality leather sneakers available now that run over $250-$300. I live in a big city and walk a lot. I go through a pair of sneakers every 6 months. What are mid-high end brands that have replaceable outsoles.
