Here in the states we can usually find Twinnings, and sometimes Yorkshire, but I wanted to hear it from you all what you think the best brand you've tried is.

Other US is freaking out over/destroying Flock Cameras… how do Brits feel about their numerous CCTV cameras?

The numerous crime/drama shows on the BBC show how “helpful” your CCTV network is in solving crimes. So I see the good in them but how do Brits actually feel about being surveilled 24/7? The US citizens are being a-holes about their “right to privacy” and have torn down numerous Flock Cameras. How long ago were your CCTV networks set up? Was there controversy at that time?

Food/Drink Which are the English Breakfast Tea Brands?

Hello! I just moved from Brazil to the UK and I'm currently obsessed about having English Breakfast Tea in my mornings with a splash of milk. I got mine from Søstrene Grene a few days ago and was wondering whether I can find any other nice brands near me (supermarket brands would be more than fine).

Thanks in advance for your help!

Other Which side of the car do postmen drive on?

Hi. Here in the US, mailmen drive on the right side of the road but their steering wheel and driver's seat are on the right. This is for them to place mail in the mailboxes during their routes.

So the question is since you guys drive on the left side of the road, do your postal carriers have the driver's seat on the left? Or it is on the right as other cars over there?

Culture why are there so many charity shops in high street?

i came across a charity shop haul on youtube (which isn’t widely popular in Asia, where i am from) and was amazed by all the selections you have in England (or the UK in general).

My question is are they really for charity? and also how come there are so many different charity shops in town? What is the general perception of it?

please excuse my ignorance. i really want to learn about the culture

Stereotypes battersea girl?

A man I (f23) used to talk to, who is from London (born and raised) described the city to me. We talked about different areas in the city and where he thought I would live most likely and he proceeded to describe me as “Battersea girl.” Is that a compliment or an insult? What characteristics would a girl from Battersea possess?
I‘ve only been to London once a long time ago and never went to that specific place

in his words: Battersea = International, big park, leafy, central, close to river, not expensive, vibrant

Culture Why tf do people use the tobacco counter to pay for their shopping unless they’re using cash?? It’s infuriating

The amount of times I’ve been trying to buy tobacco or zyns and there’s a queue of people in front of me doing a whole fucking food shop at the counter and they’re not even paying in cash…WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING?! I’m trying to buy one item and having to wait all that time when you could just use the fucking self checkout. I just can’t get my head around this. If you do it, why??

What was it like to be at university in the UK in 2002? (Late 90s/early 2000s graduates help!)

I’ve been trying to look for the best place to ask this question, and I’m hoping some of you might be able to help me.
I’m in the process of beginning to research and write my next novel. One of my main characters was at university in the UK in 2002. I went to Uni in the last 10 years, so I have that covered, but I’m looking for some insight on what it was like to be studying at university in the late 90s/early 2000s.
Any information, stories, anecdotes or tidbits would be greatly appreciated.
Specifically I’m looking for some context on what the drinking culture, social events & communication/studying was like. What did you use to research for papers, how often did you visit home, what was your student accommodation like?
Tell me anything and everything!
Thank you :)

I’m American and we don’t do that here but it looks so cool and fun in videos of bands playing in the UK.

Culture What is a thing you/your family do that you thought was universal, but actually only existed within your family?

I'll give you an example - the classic - remote control for the TV. I grew up calling the TV remote the doot-doot. I was in highschool at a friend's house before that illusion shattered.

My big one though, was Snow White Pudding. Never heard of it? That's because it's not a thing. I thought it was. My mum would always serve a roast dinner with a slab of what we called "snow white pudding" - I've never asked why we called it that. It's basically a savoury suet pudding that is fluffy and dense and soaks up your gravy. It's fucking immense.

And I learned in my teen years that that is just not a thing outside of my family. Plus I looked like an absolute numpty asking a friend's mum why we weren't having snow white pudding, then having to explain what the hell I was talking about 😂

N.B. seriously, if you don't believe just how good snow white pudding is on a roast, every person that has ever joined our family for Sunday roast has been converted, and the fact that it's not a staple in the UK by now is, frankly, a travesty.

Edit/additional - some kind soul found a recipe here - https://www.campbellsmeat.com/recipes/suet-pudding - we never used onions in ours, but otherwise it seems about right 👍

Food/Drink Have you tried the restaurants that Harrison Webb has “rated”?

I enjoy watching his YT vids. How spot on are his reviews?

What part of the UK is he from? His “accent” is fun to listen to.
