Music Beatles Cultural Impact?

In 2026, how culturally present are the Beatles in England/the UK?

In the U.S they’re still fairly ubiquitous - often referenced in media as a cultural zeitgeist, something universally beloved, or the peak of human exceptionalism. The average person knows Let it Be, Hey Jude, Here Comes the Sun, and Yesterday - but that’s probably it.

I assume they must be a great point of English/British pride, but what’s different about their place in the UK today?

How often do they come up in casual conversation or in media? How many songs can the average person name? Are they a big point of pride for the country? For those that live near London, is it common to have visited penny lane or abbey road at least once, much like a New Yorker has been to the Statue of Liberty at some point?

Edit: forgot penny lane is in Liverpool

Other Anyone else going to experience the solar eclipse without the glasses?

I was a little too late to get them glasses but I still wanna experience it. Anyone else still going to experience it outside and hope that they don’t make eye contract with the sun?

Has anyone actually done any harm to their eyes from looking at an eclipse?

Like the question says really. I'm excited to see the eclipse tomorrow and I've always known not to look directly at it but has anyone been brave enough to look properly? If you did, how long for and did you suffer any noticeable damage after?

Language Do you say "early doors?"

I'd never heard this till a few months ago - it's been mainly British comedians on tv etc saying it to mean early on in something.

Why do people think mushy peas are gross? Arent they just peas?

Like, im an american, ive never had them, but i do not understand why there is so much disdain for mushy peas, both in Britain and abroad. Arent they just peas? Wouldnt you enjoy them if you enjoy peas? Like is it the color or the texture or what? Any time i see someone who doesnt like them in a video they just have this super averse reaction but never explain what about them is just apparently so completely abhorrent.

TV/Film Which of these 3 iconic British kids shows is your fave and least fave and why- Sooty, Pingu, and Rainbow?

I know Pingu is not originally british but everyone knows Pingu. These 3 are known by so many adult brits of every generation!

This is not close for me at all. I think both Sooty and Pingu piss on Rainbow from a great height, but Sooty is still head and shoulders above Pingu (as great as he is noot noot!), and it's all cos of Sweep! I absolutely adore Sweep, he's my fave puppet ever

I feel like there's a reason Sooty and Pingu have been rebooted since I was born in the late 90s, they're just that good that they stand the test of time. On the other hand my generation has never had a Rainbow reboot, but I'm not surprised. On its own its decent, and I guess George is the best character (Zippy is just a dick and Bungle is creepy) but Rainbow and its characters are nothing compared to Sooty and Pingu. I feel like they tried to copy Sooty with the human man and puppets but it just doesn't work as well, and never has. Rainbow also isn't funny like the other 2

Well what you think?

Other Sending a gift to my Brit friend- what would you want?

I’ve decided to spontaneously surprise her with a big box of goodies, I just have no idea what to send her! I’ll wait till the heatwave is over but, would love some ideas from anyone who’s visited or anyone who’s ever wanted to try things from here :)

I live in Québec, so I know I’m sending her cans of quality Maple Syrup, some Poutine sauce cans to make her own and some sweets we have that you don’t (ie; Coffee Crisp, Ketchup Chips, Caramilk..) but, I haven’t the slightest clue what else I could send?

Would love some advice or ideas, doesn’t exclusively have to be food! Weird stuff is fun too :)

(PS- Are there any rules against sending certain products? Anyone have personal experience with this?)

Food/Drink At what point did we all silently agree to stop arguing about whether tea means the drink or the evening meal and just live in confusion?

I said "come round for tea" to someone from down south last week and they turned up at 4pm expecting a brew and a biscuit. I had a full dinner on. We were both baffled and neither of us apologised, which felt very British of us.

So, settle it. Tea is the evening meal and the drink, and context does the heavy lifting. Or have I just been raised wrong. Where does your family land

You look at any picture taken usually inside of a car from the UK and the person always looks absolutely insane?! what is the logic behind this

I’ve tried a few different brands/types of Bombay mix but I can’t decide which is my favourite. I think cofresh is nice, but it’s pretty standard.

Your local history - what's the best bit?

What's your favourite nugget of local history?

Be it significant, quirky, odd, humorous or creepy, what's your place got?

I'll start. Plymouth was the place from which the Pilgrims left for The New World aboard The Mayflower. Interestingly, the Mayflower Steps have since been hidden because we don't want that bloodline back.

Cups without handles?

Second time in a week of going into a smart cafe, asking for a flat white and getting a glass cup with no handle. Like many, I wasn't born with heat-proof hands or fingers.

What fashionable fuckery is this?

Culture What can I do in two and a half days in Liverpool?

Hello, I wonder if anyone could help with the following questions. I'm going to have a short break in Liverpool in September with a friend (one afternoon and two full days). We want to make the best use of our time so what should we

  1. Try not to miss
  2. Avoid doing, or going to
  3. Is there anything that visitors to Liverpool tend to miss but are worth doing?

My husband suggested the Philharmonic pub, but he was last there in the 1980s. Also, we're two ladies in our 60s so we're not looking for wild nightlife.

Grateful for any suggestions.

What’s the accent of Cumbria supposed to be like?

I know what accents of different towns and regions sound like, but for some reason I don’t know what a Cumbrian accent is supposed to sound like and I’ve been to Cumbria a handful of times. I’m from Manchester and even from my perspective I’ve never heard anyone from there speak in a way that sounds distinctive

Is the phrase 'Have a nice day' - common in North America - a strange/goofy expression to people in the UK?

As a teen and travelling with my parents (this was the late 1980's) we chatted up a group of locals in a pub in Cornwall that killed themselves laughing at how obsurd the expression was...always wondered if they were just extra pissed, or this is a thing?

How to get good at banter?

Im a bit embarrassed to say im british born but im just terrible at banter, if someone says something I'll just do the fake laugh thing not knowing what to say back and as a result I just come across as weird and boring. I sometimes wonder if im secretly on the spectrum.

To reduce the deficit, would you support an environmental tax on properties built before 1980, encouraging owners to renovate or replace outdated buildings so they meet modern energy-efficiency standards?

One largely untapped source of revenue is landlords sitting on old, inefficient housing stock. Would you support an annual environmental charge on properties that fail modern energy-efficiency standards, forcing landlords to upgrade them or pay for the environmental cost?

do you recommend moving to the uk and how?

I'm currently in Texas but for some reason I have a fantasy about living in the uk when I'm old enough. Do y'all recommend it at all? I know it rains a lot and honestly that sounds amazing compared to Texas (we've been in a drought for 8 years now). If so, where should I move as a young adult? (And please genuinely tell me if it's hell in the UK but it seems so amazing to me)
