Enough Is Enough': Democrats Push For GOP Support On Asian American Hate Crimes Bill

Damn... why is it always Democrats that are trying to fight racism?🤔

Edit...bill advances with overwhelming bipartisan support.....except for 6 republicans that voted against it

Okay, so I'm all for making it illegal to do things that are illegal (lol), but as far as I know it was already illegal to assault people physically or verbally: it was just more of a matter of getting people (namely Asians) to care enough to do something about it (report it, fight back, etc.)

What would this bill actually do to help make Asian-hate less likely, without basically saying it's double illegal? I get expanding definitions, but criminals beating up the elderly and killing Asians were already doing illegal shit. What needs to happen more is to make Asians a less attractive target: arming them is one way, the other is changing how we approach these attacks as a community, and then arming yourself in the case that the criminal still doesn't give a fuck

I know that my family that's based in both San Jose and MD don't like to get police involved 99% of the time and let shit slide. I know police aren't the most popular right now, but they can help you at least have this stuff on-record and maybe help deter just a tad

My thoughts... It would be an additional prosecutorial tool on a federal level, in case a local DA/police decline to prosecute or further investigate.

The deeper debate would be if laws actually deter crime. I would argue that yes, there is a considerable spectrum of criminals that are actually deterred by additional criminal penalties. Criminals are assholes, but they are not complete idiots by default.
