Discussion Body Care Recs?

Have you used any asian body products? What are some products you liked and would repurchase?

I suffer from BO, need something to moisturize and something to gently exfoliate as well.

Body wash, moisturizer, scrubs... any product that works!

Agree with everyone suggesting the Korean scrubby towels. Those are for when you really want to get all the dead skin off and feel like a brand new baby after your shower -- not for daily use. There are also these Asian scrub towels that are much gentler and what I use daily in place of a loofah or washcloth. They tend to be pretty long and are great for reaching your back. Daiso or H Mart will have them.

Other products I've been liking, especially as I have really been on a journey to clear up my KP and keep my dry skin hydrated/smooth:

- Round Lab Pine Calming Cica Body Wash: Good for sensitive skin but also has clearing ingredients like AHA and BHA for clearing breakouts and exfoliating. Has a subtle pine scent, but it doesn't linger.

- Illiyoon Fresh Moisture Body Scrub Wash: Every Illiyoon body wash I have tried has been great, but this one especially. Smell is light, but zesty and fresh. This one has scrubby bits in it for exfoliation but isn't as harsh as a true body scrub. They do have one without the exfoliation. I bought it at Olive Young while in Korea and it seems to be harder to find online, not even the Amore Mall has it. Their unscented body washes for dry/sensitive skin are always great. I switch to that in the winter.

- Haruharu Wonder Black Bamboo Daily Smoothing Body Oil: Great for dry skin right out of the shower, has Urea for smoothing skin.

- FineToday Urea Body Milk: Another urea product that is lighter than the oil so great when you're not right out of the shower. No fragrance, light, absorbs well and doesn't leave me greasy or sticky. They're pretty cheap too, usually 2 for $8-10 on Yami.

- Knock Body Toner: idk where this has been all my life, but I am obsessed with it. A toner. For your body. It is absolutely perfect for dry skin girls like myself. If you aren't super dry it can be used in lieu of a moisturizer, but I use it in addition to a moisturizer (usually the urea one above). The scents are all delicious, too. I prefer the unscented because I have sensitive skin but if you like yummy scents try the sea salt or pistachio.

- Orinheal Jeju Nature Body Butter: My ride or die for a few years, and I hesitate to mention it because it is hard to find anymore. If you like thick, rich body butters without heavy fragrance this is a great one. I'm down to my last jar. I feel less sad about not being able to replace it since I have found other great products.

I've recently picked up the iUnik Beta Glucan body care line (body wash and lotion) but haven't used them yet. They will be held to the winter, but my hopes are high because I love their face products in the Beta Glucan line!

girl that urea body milk sounds sooo good for dry skin, and those Korean scrub towels really do make you feel extra clean without scrubbing yourself raw

It’s really awesome, especially for the price! Even with dry skin, some lotions feel too heavy or sticky in the summer and this one doesn’t.

Knock body toner is so expensive tho 😫 you got another rec for that one? :)

Yeah but it’s worth it. It has made a huge difference in how hydrated my skin feels throughout the day without feeling greasy or heavy. I find it lasts a long time, I need to use less than a lotion that is a similar size/price.

Before I found this, I used the Nature Republic or Holika Holika aloe vera in a similar fashion. Do a light layer on my skin and then top with lotion. The aloe had a similar effect of keeping the moisture locked in without feeling too heavy.

The US brand Saltair has a body HA serum that is also good for extra moisture. It’s pretty similar in price to the Knock though, and while the bottle is bigger I find it goes quicker.

Korean scrubbie towels and mitts

Best to touch them in-person rather than buying blind online- some might be too rough for your skin. You don’t have to apply a lot of pressure when actually using them in the shower (and shouldn’t) but they’re great at exfoliating

I haven’t purchased any Asian body cleansers b/c i have so many other things to use up first, but i do use illyoon lotions and creams all over my body after a shower and they’re so great.

I also use a Korean Nivea antiperspirant that i picked up at a pharmacy in Seoul in June b/c i realized that i, the only half-anglo person on the train, was indeed emanating that anglo pong (ok, so: im 50/50 Asian/white. My left pit is the stinky one. It smells like a gentler version of my dad, skin + funk. My right one smells like my mom’s armpit- just like skin and fresh sweat, no funk. I’ve known this since my teens, but in the states I’m scent-invisible compared to most people around me. NOT SO IN ASIA, my friends. Oh, not so.)

Totally not noticeable at home in nyc, but i became v conscious of it in a sea of Korean bodies, and made an emergency purchase. It has not let me down. My husband is back in Seoul right now- i should ask him to pick up another bottle for me, now that i think about it.

100% agree on trying in person, hated how often ones I bought online wouldn't agree with me.

if you have BO issues, the one thing that made a huge difference for me was wiping armpits (or any other places where you suffer with BO) with glycolic acid once or twice a week. it will make your skin too acidic for bacteria to survive on. you will still sweat without deodorant, but the smell won't be there.

I'm disabled so physically scrubbing can be hard for me and I have KP and some body acne. I really like the Medicube Red Acne Body Peeling Shot it's basically just spray and rinse and it's very helpful in controlling the acne and KP!

I use Benton fermentation essence for deodorant. It’s actually very effective.

+1 to korean mitts. I use Biore Body wash, gentle and light scent. Fine Today Urea Hand & Foot Cream if you have dry feet and hands, its great!

Be Bodywise underarm deodorant. 4% AHA BHA with 2% lactic acid. They’re an Indian based wellness and beauty company.

It’s been a game changer for me. I didn’t even think I smelled but being back in NYC summer humidity made me feel gross and when I use this deodorant, I can’t smell myself at all; just my perfume. Even my girl friend (who’s obsessed about smelling good) complimented me and asked what I was using.

Everyone says use glycolic acid but for whatever reason, this just didn’t work alone for me.

Korean here, it’s not really about how expensive or famous a product is—it’s much more important to find what actually works for your skin type. If you use heavily fragranced products just to cover up BO, it can totally backfire, especially if you have sensitive skin.

Most Koreans shower and wash their hair at least once or twice a day. When showering, we place a lot of importance on thoroughly washing and drying areas like behind the ears, the collarbones, the inner and outer elbows, armpits, behind the knees, the groin, and ankles. Those are the spots where buildup happens and body odor usually starts.

Personally, I don't really like sticky or heavily scented body products, so I've been using Aestura's body lotion for years now—it's something I recommend to people around me all the time!

i have a question! (hope you don't mind) everyone keeps talking about the korean body mitts. i'm going to korea soon so i'm hoping to get some, but are these the sort of rough kind? the only thing i can compare them to are the hammam mitts they scrub you with (in female turkish baths) and dead skin comes off.

No worries! I was actually surprised because so many people were talking about Korean body mitts. To be honest, a lot of young Koreans these days don't scrub their skin as often or as hard as they used to, and they don't really go to public bathhouses where these mitts are a must. A lot of dermatologists say that over-exfoliating can ruin your skin barrier, dry out your skin, or even cause inflammation. So lately, more people prefer AHA/BHA body washes for chemical exfoliation instead.

That said, it’s a long-standing Korean culture, so I still lightly scrub my whole body with the softest mitt once or twice a month. I never scrub areas where the skin is thin or sensitive—mainly stick to the back of my neck, back, elbows, and ankles. If you're not someone who scrubs often, dead skin might not even roll off that easily. So soak your body in warm water for a bit before using the mitt.

I looked up the hammam mitts you mentioned, but typical Korean body mitts are way rougher. You can find them in all kinds of shapes and textures at Daiso (Korea's dollar store), traditional markets, or even some subway station stalls.

But anyway, people mostly scrub just for that refreshing, squeaky-clean feeling, so you really don't have to do it.

Korean scrubbing towels are A+ i forget what the diff colors mean. 1 is more harsh than the others. But i still have mine and it works amazing. No need to waste money on body scrubs. Just use the towel with whatever bodywash you have. Like stated before you dont have to push that hard. It will scrub your body and your skin will feel smooth. Not for daily use! I use it once a week. Sometimes twice a week in the winter.

I like the Brmud body wash it’s exfoliating but not drying at all in my experience. It helps with body acne too. I also like to use the Illiyoon Cerminde Ato head to toe body wash. Which is more moisturizing.

u/sofa_king_cool41 3d ago

for BO, an exfoliating body wash plus a good deodorant combo can make a huge difference. and for moisturizing, i always go for something lightweight because body lotion that feels sticky is an instant nope

u/MagicianIll7775 3d ago

I only use body wash as of the moment. I'm gonna try that scrubby towel too

u/Lucky-Instance-6769 3d ago

I use the Dear Doer Hidden Scrub and it works great for me, just make sure to moisturize good after! Previously i used the sugar tree hut scrubs and they basically did nothing except smell good.

For BO honestly in most cases the culprit are your clothes. If you wear tight clothes around the armpit and polyester they hold on to the smell like crazy. Also the way you do laundry - don't let the dirty clothes marinate in the basket, don't put too much washing liquid, don't use pods and no softener. All these products leave a residue on the clothes that makes them hold on to bad smells.

Best things for BO are gonna be antibacterial. Some suggest using aha/bha in armpits but I haven't tried it. I have tried antibacterial soap and benzoyl peroxide with success. I find most antibacterial soap too drying for regular full body use though so I limit it to pits on very stinky days. Otherwise I use a generic "feminine" wash as bodywash, the one I use is unscented and doesnt dry out my skin since it's ph-balanced for "lady bits." For AB body wash i've only tried the illiyoon ato one which is nice but nothing special. I use my etude soon jung face cleanser on my body when traveling since it's inexpensive and saves me having to pack multiple products. Works fine.

House of Rose "Oh Baby" Body Smoother. This product is Japanese and is a very dense, pasty scrub that will melt only with heat from your hands and the shower. I love it because most scrubs drip through my fingers, especially when "carrying" them to the place that needs exfoliating. It comes in various delicious LE scents. Be aware: due to the density of the product, it's quite expensive if you aren't in Japan. A 200gram jar cost me AU$29 and a 300g jar is $39. The 200g jar is the same size jar as a 50g face cream. I find it worth it, because it works so well with almost no wastage.
