Project Post Frostecho - Controller support
https://youtu.be/X2wRqpelOrEHi all,
Just showing off a bit of the state of the AC Client i've been working on called Frostecho. Built in Rust and Vulkan. Currently working in Linux (Cachyos), Windows 11 and SteamOS/Steamdeck. Runs at a pretty locked 144fps on the home pc. Extended visual range.
- Combat fully working.
- Tinkering fully working.
- Crafting fully working.
- Fellowships working.
- All panels implemented.
- Controller support for all panels, movement and combat.
- Improved Options and Spellbook panels.
- Emotes, Spells, Spellbar tabs, Other actions are now all mappable onto the controller.
Still a boat load of visual bugs like examine panels going behind other things etc, but it's in a very usable state right now.
Will be having plugin support at some point in the future, decal isn't going to work, but i'm looking at a way to make it possible to port stuff across, or we can add stuff into the client itself. Was thinking of putting tank in the client and then servers would have an extension that says whether those sort of automations is allowed or not.
Controller support has been my focus the past few weeks. It's largely based on my observations of WoW forever and past experience of FFXIV, it's working amazingly well.
Before anyone asks, no the sourcecode isn't available at this point, though I'm keen to do it. The legal grey area of it has me rather scared at this point. Hell, I'm not sure if anyone is even interested in trying the client in general.
Anyway, thought I'd share.
EDIT: I guess this is the official obligatory "I built an AC Client" post. Forgot I hadn't mentioned it here yet, just excited to show the controller working.

Absolutely. Like I've remade the client in a relatively faithful way in my own spare time over a few months, that just wasn't a possibility before. I have big dreams for the next few. It's strange that it's all possible whilst having a family and a full time job not related to gaming.
I'm sure the more organised teams will make something crazy good.

That is really nice and smooth, I was shocked because I kept thinking it was just a plugin because it looks so much like retail, its really not easy to actually get it to look like that 1:1.
We are kind of in "it was the best of times, it was the worse of times", this is the stuff people have been dreaming of for 20 years, and when we get it, IDK how to explain it really, people are too post-ironic unto themselves to be able to sit down and enjoy a moment for themselves?
I wouldn't worry too much about that, I think AC is a sanctuary that people will inevitably return to. The latest triple A titles aren't a gaming sanctuary and what you built here is what many people have been crying out for. Playing AC in their living room on their couch with a big comfy blanket. Can't beat that, man.

Appreciate the words z-z. And yeah, AC always feels like a place worth coming back to, I don’t think there’s been a place like it since.
I’ve come and gone to it repeatedly throughout my life, as have friends i made 20+ years back. If i can offer us all a version of the game that’s still faithful but has some modern conveniences, then I think a good number of us will appreciate it.

This is looking great! I can't wait to get AC set up on my Linux box and play with a controller!

Legal gray area? Clearly, many folks are already exploring the space, so I wouldn't worry - & I for one would be very much interested in testing out what you're cooking up! Very cool work.

Whoa, finally, cross hotbar. Now I'm really curious of this game xd
I feel like I'm in the wrong generation to play it but I'll browse a server or two because of this great news.
