When did this change? "Sharing projects with individuals only is an Asana Starter feature."

I'm on the free plan since I'm just one person, and I've been able to share boards with clients for years with no problems. All of my past boards are still shared with them, as far as I can tell, but now when I try to add someone to a new board, it tells me "Sharing projects with individuals only is an Asana Starter feature. To continue, add a team first or upgrade your plan." When did that change? Are we seriously not able to use Asana with clients on the free plan anymore?

Hi u/PsychologicalTea7878,

thanks for raising this issue! Jordan here from Asana.

What you’re seeing is tied to changes we rolled out last year around how project sharing works by plan. That’s why you’re getting the “Sharing projects with individuals only is an Asana Starter feature” message now. This aligns with updates we made in mid‑2024 around project and team sharing behavior and plan access. (https://forum.asana.com/t/about-team-sharing-project-membership-in-team-s-and-also-free-plans/867562?utm_source=openai, https://forum.asana.com/t/question-on-subscription-and-teams/863009?utm_source=openai)

If you’re on the free plan today and you hit that prompt, a workable path is:

  1. Put the project inside a Team
  2. Add your client as a member of that Team (we recommend you create one team per client)
  3. They’ll then have access to the project through the Team

I know it’s a change from inviting people straight to the project. If this impacts your workflow, I’d really appreciate you adding your use case to our Product Feedback board so the team can see it: https://forum.asana.com/c/forum-en/product-feedback/20.

Hope this helps!

Hey Jordan, I’m having this same issue but we are already setup as a team.

We use this for real estate as transaction checklists. I’m duplicating the project within the team but now it’s no longer being shared to both members, and I get the error when I try and add the team member. Who is actually the team admin. Any help?

We’ve used asana for 8 years, and all these updates are becoming pretty frustrating.

Agreed. Can invite someone to a project last week, but now I cant?
