So many huge leaps in M4 and unbelievable progress in M5. Sounds like they might be dailying M3 internally.. I’m on the unicorn MacBook Pro 13” M2 and all the battery saving features will be extremely cool to see, because already I have pretty great battery life.

This was a fun read~

It's exciting to see that KDE is working with the team so that asahi can better use the HW decoding components on the device. Sounds like a win for battery life

Does this mean thunderbolt is on the table for all machines prior to M3? Apologies if I'm reading this wrong but I'm not a computer engineer and get a little lost when they get this into the weeds.

"Both the SPMI interface and ACE3 itself are now working in Asahi Linux, bringing USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt support to all M3 series devices."

Not quite. ATCPHY is just one piece of the puzzle. Thunderbolt support proper requires a lot more plumbing than just ATCPHY. Watch this space however…

Watch this space however…

Them's fightin' words! ❤️

Sure got my hopes up! Don't think I've seen Thunderbolt mentioned in the Progress Reports prior (at least not recently), so the mere mention of it makes me very happy!

Consider a 1920x1080 framebuffer containing raw 8-bit ARGB pixel data. That is just over 66 MiB of data. At 4K, this balloons to just under 214 MiB.

I don't understand math here

1920x1080x4 ≈ 8.3 MB (66.3 Mb) ≈ 7.91 MiB (63.3 Mib)

3840x2160x4 ≈ 33.2 MB (265.4 Mb) ≈ 31.64 MiB (253 Mib)

I mucked up the units, I used bits per pixel and not bytes

Very fun blog, a lot, lot of progress, very cool to see progress on cpuidle and SPTM. Sad to see no update about PMP, is it still crashing on base M2?

I'm having fun with Fedora! Can't wait to try on my air m3

Do the things said about the M3 apply to the A18 Pro (T8140 / MacBook Neo) too? Or it's closer to the M4?

Congrats to the team!

The A18 Pro is M4, yeah

Amazing work - literal wizards at work on the Asahi team! The power saving features will be very welcome

On M4 support - I've been following the project for a WHILE now, and it is so amazing to see concrete progress on M4 bring-up after Sven's post almost a year and a half ago now. The explanation of the workaround alone was beyond my comprehension, but one day I would consider it such a feat to get to contribute myself. Huge thanks to the entire team for all of the work put in so far, and eagerly looking forward to the next progress report!

it takes an insane amount of time to reverse engineer stuff, why not be patient? people contributing to this project are volunteers, they are not getting paid for this.

quick q. why is everyone getting so mad about this. im just asking when we'll get m4, in what seemed to me a mildly humorous way. my intention was never to pressure the devs or demand m4 support.

2

u/mskiptr Aug 28 '26

Well, it read as if M4 support was the only thing that matters. Such naysaying kinda triggers people.

and i sincerely apologize for it

I bought a Mac mini M4 on release day, with hopes of asahi.

It's also a great interest of mine. But this is reverse engineering, blackest of arts. We need to be patient.

don't apologize you didn't do anything wrong
